I'm not sure if you guys know there's a tradition in China called "Draw lots"(抓周 zhua zhou). That means when the baby is one year old, need to choose the thing they love from the things which are put in front of them that will symbolize his future, so that the parents can know what the talent of their child is. That's pretty funny. PS! Mine was a ruler! :)

Actor, Neil Pearson, draws the raffle after being the quiz master at the annual quiz night in The Clocktower Café, in aid of the adjacent David Lean Cinema in Croydon Old Town Hall. He's probably most noted for his roles in 'Drop the Dead Donkey' and 'Waterloo Road'.
Just read an amazing collection of essays by F. Gonzalez-Cruisi entitled, "Notes of an Anatomist." His experiences within the medical field (autopsy,embalming, etc) as a basis for further thought on subjects ranging from child abuse to the human understanding of monsters. Really brilliant, find yourself a copy.

Waiting for spring to break is a state of mind I try to avoid. It often comes almost by surprise anyhow, after heavy rain or a stretch of days when the nights stop falling below freezing. But the woods is slow to shake. Deep stream hollows and shadowy forests hang on heavy, hide from sunlight, sift in snow still over my knees. Since I'm 6'4", that'd probably be deeper for you. It's physically exhausting, sure, but I'm not always prepared for the emotional weight. It feels good to feel deeply, a way to be I'd never surrender. That comes with a gravity you'd do good to resist, build some muscle to rise against a downward draw. When I wake to discover nothing but mud and new green, it'll feel even better knowing I didn't give in to hibernation.

Imagine wandering up a bone-dry draw chasing after a lost mule. You pick up a rock to throw at the ornery old cuss, and notice something is not quite right. The rock is very, very heavy. You break it apart, and inside....goooooold! Such is the origins tale of Lost Burro Mine.

D-Day
When A-Company, 1st Battalion, 116th Infantry of the 29th "Blue & Grey" division landed here (an old Virginia National Guard Unit with a long tradition harking back to Stonewall Jackson's Brigade) it was "H-Hour" on D-Day: june 6, 1944: 06.30 hour. They were coming in exactly on the right spot opposite the draw (a lot of units in other sectors drifted away from their designated areas due to the strong current) in six Royal Navy LCA assault boats. The soldiers could see the German bunkers in the distance and the beach seemed to be untouched by the preliminary bombardments. They had to cross a large stretch of beach (some 250 metres) towards the Vierville draw. The germans waited until the landing craft were all empty and then opened fire with their MG 42's, mortars, and guns.
It was carnage. A-Company was virtually wiped out within the first minutes of the landing; no one knows exactly what happened with the 30 men in LCA 1015 but all of them were killed, and most of their bodies were found on the beach, commanding officer captain Taylor Fellers among them. In fact all all but one officers were killed in action within the first minutes, as were more then half of the soldiers and NCO's. Those who did survive the initial onslaught could do little more then stay in the water or press them self against the sand hanging on to their lifes. The shingle bank offered a little bit of protection to the happy few which made it that far, but most survivors had to stay in the water, creeping forward with the rising tide.
Incredible acts of heroism were performed by men trying to help their wounded comrades out of the water only to see them cut down by enemy fire or get shot themselfes. A-Company was reduced from an assault company to a small rescue party within 15 minutes. The follow up troops of the second wave didn't fare much better and subsequent waves landed more to the east of this WN where resistance was less heavy.
Among the casualties in A-company were 19 men from Bedford, VA. Bedford’s population in 1944 was about 3,200, and proportionally the Bedford community suffered the nation’s most severe D-Day losses.
All in all the US forces on Omaha beach lost some 2500 men in a couple of hours, the same losses as 13 years of fighting in Afghanistan !
Note: Some Ranger units also landed here, and this was the inspiration for the famous first scene of the 1998 movie "Saving Private Ryan".

View from Charlie sector (from one of the positions of WN73) towards the West and the Vierville draw with WN 72 right on the beach which very much dominated the entrance towards the draw. Dog Green sector starts approx. at the pier. The whole of Omaha beach can be seen, note the natural bend of the beach. The picture was made at highest tide in the rain hence the drops on the photo.

On 16th June 2004, 'Oxted unit' 207203 draws into Eridge station at 17:30, forming an Oxted-Uckfield service. The wider 4-CEP trailer second open, inserted in May 1995, is evident in this shot. Just one month later, the unit was taken out of service at Selhurst after working the 18:54 Ashford to Hastings on 13th July 2004.
