A long time ago… in galaxies far far away, the first stars were born in the early universe. But when and how? That’s a mystery Webb is one step closer to solving.

Using Webb, researchers have found two early galaxies that are unusually bright, one of which could contain the most distant starlight ever seen. The galaxies are thought to have existed 350 and 450 million years after the big bang (respectively, from top to bottom). Unlike our Milky Way, these first galaxies are small and compact, with spherical or disk shapes rather than grand spirals.

Webb’s new findings suggest that the galaxies would have had to begin coming together about 100 million years after the big bang — meaning that the first stars might have started forming in such galaxies around that time, much earlier than expected.

Follow-up observations with Webb’s spectrographs will confirm the distances of these primordial galaxies and help us learn more about the earliest stars. More: www.nasa.gov/feature/goddard/2022/nasa-s-webb-draws-back-...

[Image description: Two vertically stacked views of galaxy cluster Abell 2744 as seen by the Webb telescope. Both views feature countless galaxies of all shapes and sizes speckling the black backdrop of space. Some are spiral, some more disk-shaped and others spherical. Farther galaxies are only seen as dots. Their colors include blue, pink, orange, and white. The view at the bottom is differentiated by bright white stars with long diffraction spikes, unseen in the view at the top. Towards the left of both views, there is a small white box highlighting a notable galaxy. These two tiny boxes have diagonal lines connecting them to close-ups of their contents, placed in much larger inset boxes on the right. The close-up box on the top, labeled as 1, shows a red dot along with some surrounding streaks of foreground galaxies. This red dot is a never-before-seen galaxy thought to have existed 350 million years after the big bang. The close-up box on the bottom, labeled as 2, shows a central red disk with a few other blurry and fuzzy foreground galaxies. This disk is another never-before-seen galaxy, this one thought to have existed 450 million years after the big bang.]

The exterior of the Hirshhorn’s iconic cylindrical building is the site of internationally renowned Swiss artist Nicolas Party’s newest artwork. “Draw the Curtain”. It wraps 360 degrees around the temporary scaffolding that encases the Museum building and spans a circumference of 829 feet, becoming the artist’s largest work to date. September 23rd, 2021.

Here's one of the strays I mentioned in the previous photo that wandered across the Rio Grande, possibly hoping to enjoy a peaceful afternoon lounging by the river. The cowboy seen in that photo soon rode by and drove him back to Mexico.

I found it interesting that, with a stunning canyon to view simply by looking to their right, this group found it more fascinating to watch this critter that can easily be seen throughout west Texas. Then I realized that the same view was available to my left, yet I was photographing them.

It's grown a bit! I'm pleased to show you that the new sections of plaited braid, on the left hand side, are far less wobbly than my earlier efforts. Not perfect, yet, but much improved. I'm not very happy with my first attempts at a strawberry fruit and leaf, but this is a practice piece for trying things out and learning by experience. I shall have to draw another fruit and leaf and try to do better.

What do you do when the weather is terrible during the summer holidays? Yup, you challenge people to indoor duels. First up, Spider-Man.

The man had this charming smile about him, one that could draw you in with one glance. It was easy for him to get his way, which led to his growing greed. He would leave the twins on their own for hours on end, while he was up to his criminal acts. Bringing home conquest after conquest. At least, that's what he would call them. Hansel and Gretel would often go days without food. Whenever he was rejected by a conquest, or a job went awry, he would lash out at the twins, abusing them physically. Sometimes, he would take it out on other conquests. Unlike the children though, he wouldn't stop until they were dead. This man would have the children help dispose of the bodies, their hands full of blood. This vicious cycle continued for many years.

"It's literally a suicide mission. All of Archon will be there. As great as we are at the job, we can't take on a full team of specials." I say before getting on my motorcycle.

"Maybe we'll get lucky, and the rest of the team gets sent off to stop an alien invasion in Sunrise or something... Or maybe Oversight's got something planned to keep them all busy, I don't know." Gretel puts her helmet on, and gets on the back of the bike.

"Yeah, here's hoping." I say before putting my helmet on, and making my way to the outpost. Traffic's pretty light at this time of day, so it doesn't take us very long to get there. After parking the bike across the street, we get off, and walk across the street, to the entrance of the apartment complex. The door creaks as I open it, with Gretel following behind me. Walking up the stairs, to the third floor. Once there, Gretel pulls out the keys to our apartment, room 312, and unlocks the door. Instantly, I make my way towards the fridge, looking for something to drink.

"Andd, there's nothing... Guess I should've got something." I close the fridge door rather quickly, once noticing there's nothing good to drink.

"You, and your energy drinks... It's probably a good thing. If the job doesn't kill you, those sure will."

"Ha, ha! What are you, my mother?" I say with a laugh, as I start loading the backpack with our gear. Various trick ammunitions for our bows and guns, along with other fun gadgets.

"Hey, someone has to wear the pants in the family. If it's not going to be you, it may as well be me." Gretel smiles, as she takes out the sniper rifle, disassembling it, and placing it into the backpack.

"Uh sis, that's a completely unrelated phrase."

"To be fair, we never did get much in the way of a proper education."

"Yea, but that's more of a common sense thing. Anyways, is that everything?"

"Pretty sure."

"Grappling hook arrow?"

"Hey, you're the archer, not me. You can pack your own trick arrows." Gretel snaps.

"Wait, what's this?" I say, picking up an arrow, but it has a boxing glove on it, instead of an arrowhead.

"Oh that? I saw it on a tv show. Pretty cool huh?" Gretel says, proud of her newfound creation.

"More like, not very practical. But sure, we'll bring it along anyway." I say, putting the boxing glove arrow in the backpack. We fill all of our pouches with the smaller gadgets that can fit inside them, before heading back outside. As we're about to cross the street, five thugs come towards us, with guns drawn. Looks to be West End Warriors, with the logo blatantly present on their shoulders.

"You're not going anywhere!" One of the thugs says, as he spits on the sidewalk.

"Give us all the money you've got.. Or else..." Another says, trying to intimidate us.

"Oo, I'm shaking in my boots! Whatever will we do sis?"

"Maybe we should show them what happens to people who try to mess with us?"

"I'm liking the sound of that! Good call. They'll be regretting their decision in 3, 2, 1." I say counting down, before drawing my bow, getting ready for the fight ahead.

Eugene Draw / performance name "Dr Draw.... as he reached the final bars of his impassioned rendition of Shubert's Ave Maria at last weekend's BuskerFest, bow strings completely shredded. Awesome to witness his talent !! Technically no longer a busker, his was the only act that did not "pass the hat", so the assumption has to be that he was being paid by the festival, though he started out as a busker on the streets of Toronto. He now has a beginner's thriving career.

You can't be squeamish in space 💉 In these pictures, Shane and I are drawing blood for the Functional Immune experiment 💪 Researchers analyse these samples for any subtle changes in our immune systems and compare this with other health information we report. Knowing what happens to the immune system before symptoms appear, in space or on Earth, could help pinpoint the onset of illness for better monitoring or treatment
