About me:
Jay Snelling *1986
I was born in the south of England in 1986. Drawing and painting leaves me with an odd combination of feeling calm and excited. I draw people who are experiencing all kinds of positive and negative emotions.
Chance operations play a key role in the creation of my drawings and paintings. I like to describe my pieces as doodles - images that take shape as they grow, rather than planned pictures. Pens are my favourite tools for drawing, but I occasionally paint and collage too.
Many of my drawings have short little stories that go with them. Some pieces have Gods or other spiritual elements, but most feature normal people experiencing situations and emotions faced by millions.
I love to browse art by people I’ve never heard of. The composer John Cage also brings me great creative comfort and I enjoy reading about his methods.
In 2017, my partner and I decided to give up our day jobs so that we could live anywhere and spend our days doing what we love. I went to university in 2004, which has enabled me to make ends meet through private tutoring, but my art techniques are all self-found. For years, I have created work and then kept it in a box or folder, but I’d now like to share it with more people.
bwah... tried over and over and over again. So difficult to draw 3 dimensional and to make it look like it really is... I was so done with it that I did another Picasso dog. :-)

Wealthy samurai hung seasonal scroll paintings in dedicated alcoves (tokonoma) where they could be admired by guests. This painting depicts Mount Arashiyama, near Kyoto. Diagonal lines of trees draw the eye down the spring-time scene, and the season's freshness is reinforced by the bright mounting of gold and green brocade.

Japan: Courts and Culture
(April 2022 - February 2023)
The Royal Collection holds some of the most significant examples of Japanese art and design in the western world. For the first time, highlights from this outstanding collection are brought together to tell the story of 300 years of diplomatic, artistic and cultural exchange between the British and Japanese royal and imperial families. The exhibition includes rare pieces of porcelain and lacquer, samurai armour, embroidered screens and diplomatic gifts from the reigns of James I to Queen Elizabeth II. Together, they offer a unique insight into the worlds of ritual, honour and artistry linking the courts and cultures of Britain and Japan.

The very first The Open Draw summer weekend with mini workshops, drawing activities and performance art on 21-22 June 2014 was a huge success. It was the closing of the first season of building a community around drawing and illustration. It was also the first time some of the finest talents of this community joined together to create a group exhibition.
