on January 25th the lunar new year of the rat begins! Also known as Chinese New Year! Many Thais have Chinese roots, especially in the south of Thailand and Koh Samui, where I am now. Hainan Chinese, sailors and fishermen and traders have been settled down here and mixed with the native Thais. They are still following their traditions. I edited a couple of video clips which I have taken here in the previous years. The celebration in our town Nathon at Samui has not changed, I think it doesn't matter if these clips are not from this year. Have a look, how it will be celebrated here. Happy Lunar New Year to you all! May the "rat🐀 year" bring all the good things, lots of love, and happiness to you!

The head of the 260 ft dragon in last nights New Year's Parade in Chinatown, San Francisco. They say the longer the dragon, the more luck for the community, so thankfully it was very long. I'm not very adept at taking night shots, but decided to share it anyway.

I was fortunate to be in Singapore during Chinese New Year and just happened to visit the Raffles Hotel when this wonderful dragon dance took place.

Before yesterdays London Flickr Photowalk I made the mistake of heading into Chinatown to see if I could catch any of their New Year Celebrations. I didn't stay long as it was crazily chaotic but I did manage to get one shot of a dragon dance.....

From Wikipedia, "Chinese New Year, or the Spring Festival, is a festival that celebrates the beginning of a new year on the traditional lunisolar Chinese calendar. It is one of the most important holidays in Chinese culture, and has been added to the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in 2024. Marking the end of winter and the beginning of spring, this festival takes place from Chinese New Year's Eve (the evening preceding the first day of the year) to the Lantern Festival, held on the 15th day of the year. The first day of Chinese New Year begins on the new moon that appears between 21 January and 20 February.

The Chinese New Year is associated with several myths and customs. The festival was traditionally a time to honour deities as well as ancestors. Within China, regional customs and traditions concerning the celebration of the New Year vary widely. The evening preceding New Year's Day is an occasion for Chinese families to gather for the annual reunion dinner. Traditionally, every family would thoroughly clean their house, symbolically sweep away any ill fortune to make way for incoming good luck. Windows and doors may be decorated with red paper-cuts and couplets representing themes such as good fortune or happiness, wealth, and longevity. Other activities include lighting firecrackers and giving money in red envelopes."

Europe, Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, West Kruiskade, Chinese New Year celebration, Dragon operators (uncut)

In Asia and urban centres with a sizeable Chinese population in the rest of the world, like Rotterdam, the Chinese New Year, or more general, Lunar New Year is celebrated.

It’s a festival that celebrates the beginning of a new year on the traditional Chinese calendar. The first day of Chinese New Year begins on the new moon that appears between 21 January and 20 February. This year the Year of the Pig was initiated. During last Saturday’s festival, the ‘street parade’ (organised on the West Kruiskade) attracted lots of attention. The ‘Lion’s dance’ and the ‘Dragon’s dance’were performed.

Shown here is the dragon dance. Chinese dragons are a symbol of China's culture, and they are believed to bring good luck to people, therefore the longer the dragon in the dance, the more success it will bring to the community. The dragons are believed to possess qualities that include high power, dignity, fertility, wisdom and auspiciousness. The appearance of a dragon is both fearsome and bold but it has a benevolent disposition, and it was an emblem to represent imperial authority. The movements in a performance traditionally symbolise historical roles of dragons demonstrating power and dignity.”

Making epic manoeuvres with a giant dragon is no mean feat. But the operators were dedicated and had great fun.

The sun has chosen to dance on wings of dragon that is perched on this grass meadow at the fag end of dusk!

The Ground Skimmer (Diplocodes trivialis) perched on a grass blade at dusk. The sun's rays were dancing on its wings creating an iridescent effect, which is also called as goniochromism.

So, tried to focus on wings where the sun was dancing through its rays!

I went to see the Chinatown parade today. I have not taken a lot of pictures. This is the dragon dance. In the Chinese New Year greetings, we have this "Be strong and healthy like the dragon and the horse" 龍馬精神.

I wish all my Flickr friends as strong and healthy as the dragon and horse in the New Year of Horse!

Have a great Sunday!

2011 Calgary Chinese Street Festival

We attended the Chinese New Year parade today. But the crowd was not like it used to be. I guess people were afraid to go out on the streets due to the fear of contracting Coronavirus. Anyway, it was fun to watch.

(Drum & gong of the Dragon dance troupe.)

I had the camera on tripod behind the drummer. The drum and gong were loud and the tempo fast. I felt the goose bumps behind my neck and my forearms.

As the dragon ran pass between the drummers and the man with child on the right, I opened the shutter. The exposure was too long to capture the dragon, but short enough to catch the child in a daze. It was a moment touched by the dragon.
