A neighborhood stray from several years ago.

He looked at me with indignation – what, I’m not coming too? Little Basset was puzzled, he was left sitting in the car and his pesky big brother was strutting off with the pack leader. I’m sure he must have been thinking what have I done to deserve this. I heard a couple of basset barks as I led Big Basset up the steps to the vet’s office – he had no idea of the fate to befall him. A little light sedation and a new kind of photography – x-rays on his lame leg.

Little basset pressed his nose up to the window and watched me come back to the car. As we drove away he cried a little – a small basset wimper and then a large basset sigh. A few minutes later he was leaping from the car at one of our usual walking spots and off sniffing without a care in the world. It was only a couple of minutes though before he remembered he was on his own and started looking out for his brother. It breaks my heart to see him take a few steps, stop, turn and look behind then look at me before carrying on sniffing.

I guess that after a while he was content being on his own as he started to run and wanted to play so we hooned around until I couldn’t keep up any more. To catch my breath I grabbed my camera determined to get a couple of portraits of Mason. He as usual had other ideas when I got close up. He really is a minx – determined not to look the camera in the eye. To reward him for his patience we ran all the way back to the car and he was a happy basset once again.

My favorite dogs in Sri lanka :). In Sri lanka you find dogs everywhere: from the beach to the center of a busy crossroad. A lot of them don't have an owner, yet they keep alive by receiving food from the citizens our sweet tourists like me :). Someone told me you had at least 1 million dogs in Sri lanka. That's quite a lot for a small island with only 18 million citizens.

Oliver, a golden retreiver, swims in the canal that runs through a public park. His human simply sat on the side and watched. And watched. and watched.

3/06- Look what a cutie!! although I chopped off his ears and one paw, and not even mentioning that's blurry, he still looks cute :-)

Wedgie on the left was the last to die. Harley was replaced by Ezra and Jeannie was replaced by Yuji. Then Ezra died to be replaced by Willow, and they are still a pack.

Dog -sat my sister's dogs for a few days whilst she moved house. It's almost impossible to get a picture of Ellie (the Spaniel pup') as she doesn't stay put for more than 5 seconds.

As a nearly lifelong vegetarian, you can perhaps imagine my delight when I saw soy dogs (vegetarian hot dogs made from soybeans) on sale on a NYC pushcart!!!

I'm posting this opposite a photo of Nathan's in Coney Island as a measure of equal time for the vegetarians among us... I explained to the rather astonished vendor after making the photo how thrilled I was that he'd made the step "down" the food chain!

My father invented the term "meat analogues" to describe this kind of veggie food years ago. Long live "meat analogues"--as well as the animals we don't kill by being vegetarians!
