On June 1st, 2014 at 4:16pm, the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department (LPFD) responded to multiple reports of a vegetation fire at 400 Wall St. near Granada High School in Livermore. Arriving units found a good-sized working vegetation fire in the grass behind the school and immediately went into offensive mode. Upon arrival, LPFD Battalion 9 assumed Wall IC and requested a second alarm, summoning several Type 1 engines to assist the Type 3 engines and Patrols with fire attack as well as to provide access to a water supply. Alameda County Fire responded two battalion chiefs (Battalion 2 and Battalion 3) and a Type 3 engine (Engine 308) to assist as well. Because the fire was also threatening a couple structures nearby, LPFD Truck 96 responded to the call also for structure protection, but cleared by the time I arrived on scene.
Besides Truck 96, the total balance of apparatus on scene included Alameda County Battalions 2 and 3, LPFD Battalion 9, Alameda County Type 3 Engine 308, LPFD Type 3 Engines 394 and 399, LPFD Chief 90, LPFD Patrol Engines 491, 495, 497, and LPFD Type 1 Engines 90, 95, 97, and 98, making for a total of 15 pieces of apparatus on scene!

I had to put the chrome fender well trim on to protect the metal from people opening their car doors and denting the truck. I would rather have a $20 piece of chrome dented than a $120 repair on the metal underneath.

These cool Ram 5500's belong to United Towing of Livermore. I photographed these recovery trucks and dozens more in October at the California Tow Truck Association's annual parade to raise awareness of the state Move Over Law. Be sure to slow down and move over for tow trucks & other emergency vehicles providing assistance alongside our busy roads or highways. Yesterday, a tragic accident claimed the life of John Breaux, a well-known and well-liked man of 57. A car left the roadway and struck John as he was cleaning up trash along US 287. The driver was arrested.
John rode his bike everywhere, often stopping to pick up trash or recyclables. He could easily be picked out by his full beard, plastic bags hung on his handlebars, and friendly nature. At least he died while in the line of duty, so to speak.
John was probably the most well-liked citizen in this part of Boulder County. He'll be missed not only by his absence, but because Lafayette's and Louisville's roadsides won't be as well-kept any longer, as you can already see in this photograph of US 287, across from his makeshift roadside memorial.
