Federal forest management dates back to 1876 when Congress created the office of Special Agent in the U.S. Department of Agriculture to assess the quality and conditions of forests in the United States. In 1881 the Department expanded the office into the Division of Forestry. A decade later Congress passed the Forest Reserve Act of 1891 authorizing the President to designate public lands in the West into what were then called “forest reserves.” Responsibility for these reserves fell under the Department of the Interior until 1905 when President Theodore Roosevelt transferred their care to the Department of Agriculture’s new U.S. Forest Service. Gifford Pinchot led this new agency as its first Chief, charged with caring for the newly renamed national forests.

These cool Ram 5500's belong to United Towing of Livermore. I photographed these recovery trucks and dozens more in October at the California Tow Truck Association's annual parade to raise awareness of the state Move Over Law. Be sure to slow down and move over for tow trucks & other emergency vehicles providing assistance alongside our busy roads or highways. More of my photos from this parade can be seen on the CTTA's facebook page.

On June 1st, 2014 at 4:16pm, the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department (LPFD) responded to multiple reports of a vegetation fire at 400 Wall St. near Granada High School in Livermore. Arriving units found a good-sized working vegetation fire in the grass behind the school and immediately went into offensive mode. Upon arrival, LPFD Battalion 9 assumed Wall IC and requested a second alarm, summoning several Type 1 engines to assist the Type 3 engines and Patrols with fire attack as well as to provide access to a water supply. Alameda County Fire responded two battalion chiefs (Battalion 2 and Battalion 3) and a Type 3 engine (Engine 308) to assist as well. Because the fire was also threatening a couple structures nearby, LPFD Truck 96 responded to the call also for structure protection, but cleared by the time I arrived on scene.

Besides Truck 96, the total balance of apparatus on scene included Alameda County Battalions 2 and 3, LPFD Battalion 9, Alameda County Type 3 Engine 308, LPFD Type 3 Engines 394 and 399, LPFD Chief 90, LPFD Patrol Engines 491, 495, 497, and LPFD Type 1 Engines 90, 95, 97, and 98, making for a total of 15 pieces of apparatus on scene!

This was made by Road Champs in the mid 1990's in 2 wheel drive form and that's about the time I bought it..But after I bought it I found the quality of the paint to be poor with some small casting defects under it the doors didn't look right when they were open either because they left the door frames off so I disassembled it and removed the paint and fixed the casting defects and then I left the parts in a box for over 20 years.

But recently I brought it back out to work on it again and as you can see I made it into a 4x4 I also redid the interior by changing the seats and steering wheel the doors are glued shut now also and soon I will look for a good paint color.

I had to put the chrome fender well trim on to protect the metal from people opening their car doors and denting the truck. I would rather have a $20 piece of chrome dented than a $120 repair on the metal underneath.
