When Winn-Dixie suffered its own bankruptcy problems a few years ago, they ended up closing a lot of their city locations. However, it seems that these rural stores may have helped keep the company afloat.

The Dixie Square Mall in Harvey, Illinois opened in 1965 and closed in 1978. In 1979 the recently closed mall was used to film the mall scene in "The Blue Brothers"
Besides being used for movie filming it also saw use as a school from 1979 to 1981. The mall has been completely abandoned since. There have been many plans for demolition, but so far the mall survives (more or less).

This old neon sign declared “World Class Shopping Since 1957” and once beckoned tourists and locals traveling on Route 11 to stop and shop at The Dixie Pottery complex located here. Dixie Pottery once sold all kinds of candles, wicker, housewares, and decorative figurines at its gift shop located here. At one time the parking lot was filled on weekends but according to an interview with the general manager of the place, it succumbed to the national big box retailers and closed its doors for good in 2008. According to the property’s current owners the iconic Dixie Pottery sign was removed from the property for restoration in 2020.

This little girl came through the newsroom almost on accident. Kristin was working on a story about Heart of the Hammock Humane Society (located in Dixie County) that was having a hard time keeping its doors open because of land ordinances in the area. While wrapping up an interview a little girl came in to drop of a litter of puppies that she was no longer able to take care of because her family's house recently was destroyed in a fire. Dixie was part of this litter of about six and Kristin fell in love with the little fur ball. She decided to give it to her dad as a Father's Day gift, but before that handoff occurred Dixie had to get through the work day and long drive. Here you can see her lounging on Kristin's shoulder while she writes her story for the newscast. She decided to name her Dixie after the County in which she was rescued. Everyone at the station loved Dixie and she even got a chance to be on TV! Goodbye Florida, Hello Hollywood? :)

The Hi5 Group was over for our weekly meeting yesterday. Dixie jumped up on the treadmill and gave Chris a look. Chris turned on the treadmill for Dixie, and Alexandra was fascinated. She took this video of Dixie walking.

This is a maquette of the larger statue of Dixie by sculptor Tom Murphy that stands outside Goodison Park , Everton FC's football ground , in Liverpool .
William Ralph "Dixie" Dean ( 22nd January 1907 – 1st March 1980 ) was an Everton FC legend. Dean signed for Everton for £3,000, then a record fee received for Tranmere Rovers. He made an immediate impact, scoring 32 goals in his first full season. A motorcycling accident at Holywell, North Wales in summer 1926 left Dean with a fractured skull and jaw, and doctors were unsure whether he would be able to play again. In his next game for Everton he scored using his head, leading Evertonians to joke that the doctor left a metal plate in Dean's head .
He is still the only player in English football to have scored 60 league goals in one season (1927–28).

Dixie Liquer is a local landmark. It sits in Georgetown DC just across the river from Virginia. As you go over Key bridge it is the first place one sees. During the Blue Law years, Virginia residents would sneak into DC and buy liquer at Dixie on Sundays.
Main Street Duncan, OK circa 1940. Original store before remodels. Main Street was still red bricks. Went there as a boy to buy Cub Scout and Boy Scout equipment. The oiled wooden floors gave the Dixie an unmistakable aroma. The old building burned to the ground a few weeks ago.

Correction: this is not, in fact, Montgomery Ward's. I was mistaken. It is actually part of Woolworth's and the mall's food court.
