EMS Coordinator 12

Turning left now from the right corner of the store, we have this view down the back aisle of the Trinity Commons Kroger, and some ceiling tile removed at the division overhead. I really don't think the drop ceiling will be removed entirely (and surely hope not!), but it's a bit too soon to tell at this point. Lots of ceiling tiles have been removed either way, but my guess (for the time being) is these are being removed for things like new piping (a lot of the refrigerated cases look like they're more than ready for replacement), or even a new fire alarm system, as it *looked* like some new equipment of that type was being installed. I'm no expert on that stuff however, so I could be totally wrong about that new fire equipment theory! What I don't think I'm wrong about: that blue wall down in the distance is a tell-tale sign of the upcoming Marketplace décor makeover.

The Minnesota Twins (89-57) traveled to Cleveland to take on the Cleveland Indians (86-61) in a three game series.

This series is the most important of the year for both teams as they are racing to win the AL Central. Cleveland entered the series 3.5 games behind the Twins in the division.

NCAA Division III Wrestling Regional Tournament 2016/2017.

Roger Williams University (Providence, Rhode Island) • February 25, 2017.

On the sidelines during match 35. They're all present for the matches (and most specifically their own matches), but the ways in which the wrestlers pass the time—with rituals, music, preening, conversation, or other activities—can be as interesting as the bouts. Preparation and anticipation give way to euphoria and potential letdown, and everything in between. It's fascinating.

Match 35, at 133 pounds, saw Austin Sisco (SUNY-O win a decision (9-4) over Nicholas Camacho (CU).

Postcards and letters up to 40 grams from prisoners of war had free postage anywhere in the world.

- please ignore the two postage due stamps (not tied) as they were most likely added a later time to increase the value of the cover... (I purchased the cover for the RARE strike of the "6th Division / Passed By Censor" handstamp).

The designation, 6th DIVISION, may be explained by the fact that in 1913 (1914 in another reference) Canada was divided for military purposes into 6 Divisional Areas and 3 Military Districts. Reference "The Militia List-Dominion of Canada, page 141". D.A.6 comprised the provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island with headquarters at Halifax. Early in 1916 the 6 Divisional Area titles were dropped in favour of Military Districts with the same 3 provinces making up M.D.6 and H.Q. at Halifax. In November 1917 New Brunswick became M.D.7 with H.Q. at St. John. LINK - bnaps.org/hhl/newsletters/mm/mm-1982-01-n047.pdf

Here are some random excerpts from various references which add a little colour to the story:

In February 1915 Otter (Maj-Gen) travelled to Halifax where about 80 prisoners were confined in the Citadel.

More than 800 Germans (by British request) were transferred from Newfoundland and the West Indies to Canada. An abandoned factory building in Amherst N.S. was rented. Some of these prisoners had been in the war in Europe, and at sea, and were somewhat dangerous. The Officers were removed to the Citadel at Halifax.

By the end of 1916 the German officers at the Citadel were returned to Amherst (Likely by 1 October as internment operations at the Citadel ceased 3 October, 1916),

Only in 1919, July 24, could the first large shipment of prisoners, mostly German sailors from Amherst, sail from Quebec for Rotterdam.

The Amherst internment facilities were closed 27 September, 1919. LINK - bnaps.org/hhl/newsletters/mm/mm-1982-01-n047.pdf

Internment operations in the Maritime Provinces were overseen by the Officer Commanding, Canadian Military District 6, headquartered at the Halifax Citadel. This officer and the staff he commanded oversaw the operation of three prisoner-of-war internment camps in Nova Scotia: at Melville Island on Halifax’s Northwest Arm (September 8, 1914 to January 25, 1915), at the Citadel itself (October 1, 1914 to October 3, 1916), and at Amherst (April 17, 1915 to September 27, 1919). The railroad gods were happy this day, as the sun was warm and bright for this rare daylight move on the Southern Tier.

American Soldiers of the 9th Infantry Division at the Siegfried Line (Westwall) near the Hürtgenwald. (Roetgen, Germany, Sep 1944)

The 3rd Armored Division was the first Western Allied force to cross the Siegfried Line into Germany on the 12th of September 1944. 3rd Armored Division's 2nd Battalion 33rd Armored Regiment and 36th Armored Infantry Regiment named "Task Force Lovelady", lead by Lt. Colonel William B. Lovelady, facing little resistance crossed the boarder and advanced to the town of Roetgen. The village of Roetgen was the first German town to fall to the Allies allowing for the Divisions advance continuing to Stolberg and onto the city of Aachen.

The "Dragon's Teeth" near Roetgen were built to prevent the enemy's further advance into Germany with the location chosen using the natural valley. The defenses across the Grölisbach valley ran for approximately 100m, with a gate and steel beams able to be deployed to block the road. Two Regelbau 105d-type, six-man MG-34 bunkers built within the hills overlooked the defensive wall. However during the 3rd Armored Division's advance, these bunkers were found to be abandoned.

The Siegfried Line was constructed by Organization Todt from 1936 to 1939, stretching for over 640km and consisting of more than 22,000 bunkers. The defensive line was abandoned in 1940, however in 1944 with war approaching Germany the neglected defenses where quickly put back into action.

The 69th Division, in early March, drove the Germans from dominating positions in the heart of the Siegfried Line. Answers to the soldiers' reactions to combat are as varied as the men themselves... "Cold weather was the worst part of it all," says Pvt. James B. Gray, Fayetsville, Tenn. 4 March, 1945. Near Ramscheid, Germany.
