The Essex Skipper has enjoyed the greatest expansion of distribution of any resident British butterfly since the 1970s. Once confined to the south-east of England, it is spreading west and northwards. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to have quite reached the Pennines yet so I had to travel to Nottinghamshire to find these.

It was first described in Germany in 1808 but it took another eighty years before it was discovered in Britain. This is because it was overlooked as the commoner Small Skipper. The most reliable method of separating the two is that the underside tips of the antennae are black in Essex (NB both have black tips to antennae, but the underside tip is pale in Small Skipper).

The name Thymelicus was named after the Chorus in Greek dramas. The Chorus were the dancers, reflecting the lively movements of the skippers. The name lineola means "little line" (Small Skipper was once known as linea=line), reflecting the shorter scent brand on male butterflies. This black line runs parallel to the wing edge in Essex Skippers but converges towards the wing tip in Small Skipper. The short scent brand is visible in this photograph as a black stripe in the middle of the forewing.

I decided to install the new power distribution box under the scuttle for mechanical and thermal protection plus I shouldn't need to get access to it. I'll wire in some spare power feeds to a separate connector that is accessible in the event I need to add some extra devices later in the car's life. I cut 2 14mm holes in the side to give access to either bus bar from the loom running past the rear

Chris Roberts converted all of the lighting in his home to LED lighting that is 100% powered by solar energy. The project consists of a Solar Array, a Battery Bank, a Networked Power Distribution and Control System, and 24 LED lights. The solar array racks, LED lights and the power distribution and control system are his own design. The solar array is made up of eight 85W rack mounted solar panels. The racks allow the panels manually pointed toward the sun by adjusting azimuth and elevation. There are 7 12V Concorde Sun Extender in the battery bank. The 12VDC is distributed to networked control circuits. The LEDs are controlled by a master controller that reads touch switches and motion sensors and then sends on/off commands to the LEDs. The lights turn themselves off when not needed to conserve energy.

One thing I have always liked about Kerala is that the traditions and practices are nature friendly. While the west is slowly adopting green practices. Kerala uses banana leaves as plates for food. It may not work as good as the Ziplock bag or Dixie plate, but it is green. Kerala shops also make use of newspapers for packing food items. Until a few years ago you couldn't get plastic bags, you had to carry your own.

Babu cutting the banana leaves into small squares. The pieces would be used as the plates for distributing prasadam.
