LIC Dombivli branch members have set up a social organization called "Jeevan Adhaar" that helps in rural development and welfare. I had the chance to visit a tribal village near Badlapur for their annual trip to distribute Diwali sweets and faral .. :)

Distributed by Carradice. Made in proofed waxed cotton with a fully waterproof lining and with heavy leather trims, the pannier has a removable shoulder strap while the rucksack and dispatch bag both have a dedicated laptop section. For extreme weather conditions, the pannier and rucksack both have the option of a waterproof outer cover.

Rulers + an old belt to both help distribute the compression between the two rulers and even out the "bump" from the center strip of leather on the bag.

I distributed notebooks and coloured pencils in this poor school in Abhaneri. My strongest emotion of the week.

Abhaneri is a village in the Dausa district of Rajasthan state in India. It is situated at a distance of 95 km from Jaipur, on the Jaipur-Agra road.

The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) Local 1408 Scholarship Fund awarded a record $46,500 in scholarships to 21 area high school seniors and college students during a ceremony today at Edward Waters University (EWU). The fund is affiliated with labor union ILA Local 1408, which represents many of the longshoremen and dock workers who move cargo through JAXPORT’s terminals.

The award is the largest annual amount distributed in the ILA Scholarship Fund’s 27-year history. Established in 1995 by Jacksonville native Charles Spencer, the ILA 1408 scholarship program has awarded nearly 1,000 scholarships totaling more than a million dollars.

“It is my greatest honor to support local students who deserve the opportunity to earn an education,” said Spencer. “This historic award speaks volumes about the scholarship fund’s importance to our community. We are grateful for our sponsors’ generosity as challenging times continue for many families on the First Coast.”

To be considered for the scholarship, local applicants were required to have a minimum 3.0 GPA, complete community service activities and submit an essay. Six of the recipients are first-generation college students.

Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra distributed three-wheelers to over 200 physically challenged persons in New Delhi. On Late Rajiv Gandhi's birthday it was supposed to be distributed by Congress President Sonia Gandhi but due to her illness it got postponed.

Rahul and Priyanka, interacted with almost all the people who were given motorised three-wheelers by the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation and spent some time with them.

They went to almost every single person, exchanged pleasantries with them and heard their problems.

Bletilla, common name urn orchid, is a temperate, terrestrial genus of orchids containing 5 currently recognized species distributed through China, Japan, Taiwan, south to Vietnam, Thailand and Myanmar. The pseudobulbs resemble spreading corms which usually sit at ground level. Each pseudobulb generally bears several pleated leaves around 40 cm long. The racemes of flowers emerge from the center of the years new growth before it is mature, during spring and early summer. The flowers vary in color from white to purple, and all species have four pollinia. The tubers resemble a horn or claw. They are grayish-white or yellowish-white in appearance, with concentric rings and brown rootlets. They have a hard texture and do not break easily.Bletilla species are generally hardy, though some need protection from severely cold frost. It is better to keep them in pots of well drained media so that water does not sit around the roots during winter when the plants are not actively growing. They should also be watered sparingly at the start of the growing season as the new shoots emerge, as new roots often do not follow for around four weeks afterwards. Bletilla striata is the most common form found in the nursery trade and is often labeled simply as 'Hardy Orchid' or 'Chinese Ground Orchid' and is quite inexpensive. This beautiful and hardy deciduous orchid has the distinction of being one of the first orchids in cultivation in England dating from around 1794. The very flat knob-like tuberous root system is typically sympodial, expansive and each shoot is of annual duration only. On established plants, almost every new growth shoot has a flower spike before leaves fully develop. Each shoot can have up to fourteen beautiful rose-mauve flowers with a ruffled lip about 30mm diameter, scentless and looking something like a miniature Cattleya orchid flower. An established clump can have literally dozens of flower spikes flowering in the late Spring and the clumps only increase in beauty with time. They rarely exceed two feet in height. The flowers and leaves are at the mercy of late frosts, which are to be avoided if at all possible with coverings of a sheet or newspapers. Resist the temptation to remove the mulch layer even if the new growths are raising up the mulch due to an early Spring, unless no more frosts are likely. Unlike most tropical orchids, B. striata has attractive foliage even when not flowering. The pleated, tapered foliage looks very similar to the juvenile leaves of many palm species. A well established clump of these in flower is quite beautiful and they are surprisingly hardy even into USDA Zone 5 with a heavy mulch. They easily succeed in USDA Zone 6 with only a moderate mulch of straw or leaves. These hardiness ratings only apply to plants in the ground with the idea of preventing the actual root system from being frozen. If potted, they should be placed in a frost-free location if winter temperatures go below freezing. The plant is generally considered hardy without a mulch if minimum winter temperatures do not go below 25 °F.They have a great reputation of being the absolute easiest orchid for a beginner to grow. Unlike most tropical epiphytic orchids, this plant comes from somewhat temperate zones and grows in soil rather than on trees and require no extraordinary care to grow successfully. They prefer well drained evenly moist soils that are high in organic material and that never dry out nor remain sodden. They are sympodial growers and will form handsome clumps in only a few years. Other species and hybrids are occasionally available, the most common being B. striata var. alba, a white variation of the rose-mauve B. striata. Bletilla ochracea, a somewhat rare species from China has unusual flowers with yellow sepals and petals with a red-marked white lip and is becoming more available to collectors. Bletilla Penway Dragon (formosana × szetschuaunica) appears to be one of the exciting new hybrid grex if it becomes more available.

Chesapeake Conservation Corps intern Jonas Lee, working with DNR's Resource Assessment Service, is conducting a submerged aquatic vegetation restoration project in Centennial Lake in Howard County for his capstone project. Approximately one half acre was fenced and one hundred thousand wild celery (Vallisneria americana) seeds were distributed into the headwaters of the lake both inside of and outside of the fenced area. Jonas will revisit the site approximately weekly throughout the growing season to evaluate the success of the project and to determine if waterfowl predation has an impact on native species of submerged aquatic vegetation in the lake.

I guess it's almost time to distribute all these presents! This was during our family's annual Christmas party/get-together. This year, we were having it at Melinda's place here in Stockton, CA. Wow, we come here like every month for the past few months lol. We had lots of food, fun games and simply enjoyed each others' company during this holiday season... Anyway, have a Merry Christmas & a happy new year everyone! (Tuesday, December 24, 2019)

*Did you know? Christmas Eve is the evening or entire day before Christmas Day, the festival commemorating the birth of Jesus. Christmas Day is observed around the world, and Christmas Eve is widely observed as a full or partial holiday in anticipation of Christmas Day. Together, both days are considered one of the most culturally significant celebrations in Christendom and Western society... -Wikipedia.

Distribute Bhagavad Gita CDs & Books to spread spiritual knowledge & stop human degradation!

It was the home of the Perran Iron Foundry, an innovative concern, run by the Fox family of Falmouth and other Quaker business families. It was set up on the site of a tin smelting works in 1791. The foundry was later operated in partnership with the Williams family, and in 1858, it was sold to them.

The creek serving the factory silted up and mining in Cornwall declined. The wharf had been used to import timber for the mining industry from Scandinavia. The slump in the mining industry during the 1870s hit Perran Foundry badly and it closed in March 1879 with the loss of 400 jobs, causing great distress in the parish. In April 1879, the Royal Cornwall Gazette reported that a soup kitchen had been open since January: ″793 people had attended and 1,240 quarts of soup were distributed″. In July 1880 a preliminary notice of an intended auction for Perran Foundry was planned for mid-August. Williams's Perran Foundry covered an area of over 4 acres (1.6 ha) and had a lease of 99 years (commencing 24 August 1874) from Colonel Tremayne. The property contained a number of workshops, including blacksmith and engineers, a hammermill and a quay at Restronguet with access for 200 ton vessels.[6] The machinery, plant and stock were auctioned on 30 September and 1 October 1880. Large stocks of boiler plates and machinery at the Boiler Yard, Ponsanooth were auctioned, and at the Pattern Shop, Foundry Yard, 10 tons of copper, brass, lead, tin, pewter and other metals, 6 tons of steel, several thousand fire bricks, 50 tons coal and coke, timber and numerous other lots.

The buildings including Manor Mill on the opposite side of the road were later adapted by the Edwards Brothers for the milling and storage of grains and animal foods, and also cloth dyeing; another waterwheel was added. Over the years there have been ambitious plans which have come and gone, but little changed at the foundry site for many years apart from the gradual deterioration of the buildings.[8] The site has been used for various purposes since but closed in 1986.

In 2005, the owners, North Hill Estates Ltd, applied for planning permission to redevelop the site. The proposal was for a mix of live/work units and residential accommodation. Further consultation on their proposal was ongoing (2007).

Planning was approved and the site has been under development in recent years to enable new homes to flourish from the foundations of its 200-year history.

Weston-super-Mare - The Floral Clock. A series of commercial photos distributed by VistaScreen in the 1950s.

News item from the BBC, 9 January 2024: 'A town's beloved floral clock will be restored after being concreted over by volunteers.

The Lions Club, who have maintained the display for 15 years, planned to paint a mural at the site after struggling to look after the plants.

But after a council meeting with the Lions, the concrete will be removed.

Councillor Mike Solomon said: "We've listened to feedback from residents who are concerned by recent changes made to the floral clock in Weston-super-Mare. We're acting quickly to respond.

"Following an urgent meeting with the Lions Club of Weston-super-Mare, who maintain the site, we've agreed that North Somerset Council will remove the concrete and restore flower beds.

"We hope to work with volunteers on this project to make the site the best it can be."

The floral clock was built in 1935 and then restored in 1951.

Earlier in the week, Weston Lions president Chick Parkin said it had become "harder and harder to look after the clock".

"We put out a plea last year for people to come out and help us water it, but only two people reacted to our cry for help," he said.

The council has put out a call for volunteers to help the Lions maintain it and has asked anyone who wants to sponsor the clock to get in touch.'
