A pair of BNSF ES44ACs, #5813 and #6231 are DPUs on the rear of a 2x2 southbound BNSF coal train (143 cars) on the Ft Scott Sub at BN Junction in KCMO. This train is headed to New Madrid Power Plant in Marston, MO.

Timing is everything. Less than 5 minutes before I took this picture I got out of work and decided to drive home following the tracks. After two blocks I looked north and voila...time to park and get ready.

I have to thank my buddy Darryl for this one. He informed me this was coming the day before. I'm glad he did since this is my favorite UP heritage unit, love the 2 shades of blue and the white on the sides and the front. On this day, I got my break. Union Pacific's Missouri Pacific heritage unit #1982 serves as DPU on the rear of a coal train (121 cars) on the Terminal Main at Kansas City Union Station in KCMO. This train will turn onto Kansas City Southern's Pittsburg Sub and head south.

The distributed power unit of this eastbound CN manifest freight is crossing the diamond of the CN Flint and Holly subdivisions in Durand, Michigan. The train is on the Flint Sub.

My first catch of this trip to Reeseville was supposed to be a late, and tasty, 276. Alas, I ended up with 608 instead. At least the scenery was a little different.

The DPUs from S774 reflect on the water in the parking lot. There was just a splash of potash on the end of this train.

Union Pacific SD70ACe #8601 serves as DPU on the rear of a UP coal train (127 cars) heading to Knoche Yard in KCMO. This train is bound for Hawthorn power plant on the east side of KCMO.

The loaded Sweetwater, MT grain train with the CP leader from 2 weeks ago had a Grey Ghost as part of a 2 unit mid-train DP set. They were moved forward about 25 cars from the rear in Gallup for the grades ahead on the Seligman Sub and even further along through California. The 4567 was delivered to TFM is this grey scheme in 8-2000, with the KCS just changing the lettering upon acquiring the Mexican road.

Today's M346 has one unit up front and one as a DPU around mid-train. I couldn't get sunshine to save my life today...

With more than 600 axles and mid-train DPUs, M342 comes flying down the main at Neenah. The "LED" numberboards really stand out on these GEVOs.

Kansas City Southern ES44AC #4847 serves as DPU on the rear of southbound CPKC grain (97 cars) on the Pittsburg Sub at 12th St in KCMO.

Canadian Pacific CW44AC #8507 serving as DPU inside an eastbound manifest/stack (99 couplered cars) on the Watertown Sub in Milwaukee, WI.

BNSF SD70MAC 8838 was a DPU on the end of a westbound unit coal train departing Helena, MT on June 8, 2008. There were two other BNSF Big Macs and two MRL 70ACes on the front and four MRL 70ACes in the middle of this train.

I don't get this often. BNSF Fakebonnet CW44-9 #750 serves as DPU on the rear of a loaded grain train (114 cars) G-LYSELP on the KCT North-South Corridor in the West Bottoms of KCMO.

A447 ducked in the clear and X342 came calling. IC 2719 kept things moving in the middle. The gray skies are all we seem to have now.

Similar to the head end of B790, there's a cowl unit and a GEVO. These two, however, are shoving pretty hard.

YN2 CSX CW44AC #552 serves as rear DPU on a southbound KCS manifest (101 cars) on the siding on the Pittsburg Sub in Grandview, MO. The train was stopped at this point either for a northbound or was working IFG just south of here. This YN2 paint is definitely a better scheme for CSX. YN3 can be nice with the right light, but this is better.

CN SD75I #5731 and ES44DC #2243 serving as DPUs on the rear of a 115 car southbound CN coal train on the Ft. Scott Sub at BN Junction in KCMO. Judging from the reporting marks on most of the cars, this train was bound for Mississippi.

CW44AC #5630 serving as DPU on the rear of a southbound BNSF coal train (127 cars) entering Knoche Yard at N Olive St in KCMO. While a train with all CW44ACs as power is common on western railroad rival Union Pacific, this is extremely rare on BNSF, at least in terms of me seeing it.

After the international portion of this train comes the domestic portion of the 70 couplered car intermodal. The 4 DPUs are as follows:

#8257 - BNSF ES44C4

#4609 - Kansas City Southern CW44AC

#4244 - BNSF ES44C4

#4922 - ex BNSF, now GECX CW44-9

Coming from the direction of Staples Mill Station and Acca railyard.

H1 BNSF CW44-9 #1117 serves as DPU on the rear of a northbound 1x1 turbine parts train (27 cars) on the Ft Scott Sub at BN Junction in KCMO. A bonus is getting a train at all 3 levels at BN Junction. The other 2 trains are stopped westbound trains.

Looking south toward Santa Fe Junction in KCMO, on the right is an eastbound Union Pacific manifest. This screwed up my plans for where to shoot the DPU. On the left, southbound BNSF ethanol (93 cars) with ES44DC #7823 serving as DPU on the rear. This was not on the train coming down from the north. It was added at Murray.

Southbound BNSF coal (124 cars) in the West Bottoms in Kansas City, MO. SD70ACe #9286 is the DPU. This train is bound for Martin Lake Power Plant in Tatum, TX.

Union Pacific CW44ACM #6451 serving as DPU on the rear of a westbound Union Pacific grain (112 cars) at Santa Fe Junction just feet inside Kansas City, KS.

Too bad this wasn't the lead power. I like the new paint scheme on the SD70ACe units. SD70ACe #8562 and ES44AC (AC45CCTE) #8084 serve as DPUs inside a long eastbound UP intermodal (81 cars) on the Metro Sub in the West Bottoms of KCMO.

UP 8637 is a DPU on an eastbound stack train.

A varied BNSF trio on the rear of a southbound BNSF coal train (134 cars) on the Ft Scott Sub at CP 30th St in KCMO. The units on this Palos, AL bound train are as follows:

#5607 - CW44AC

#8950 - H2 SD70MAC

#9359 - SD70ACe

Put your nose to the grindstone...or loaded coal train. C701's DPU works hard on the rear end.
