'Holy Cow!'
Lucky to still be alive after last thursday's crazy thunderstorms following up the extreme heat we had last. I was shooting at a lake and already heard the thunder in the distance. When I noticed it was coming from behind of me I started looking for other compositions. These cows were the closest thing I could find and they were looking funny at me with the storm going strong in the distance. 5 minutes after I took this shot I had to rush into my car for shelter as the rain started pouring and the storm was coming right at me. There were thunder strikes all around me and I was observing the show from out of my car.
This is a blend of 2 different exposures. 1 was taken at 15 seconds for all of the lightning. After I got the proper lightning shot the cows were obviously a bit blurry. So I took another shot of them at ISO 1600 and layered it.

This has been more of a spur of the moment stop to walk and hike this area in Death Valley National Park. I'd read about the polished rocks and layers, but as I walked further in, I found myself drawn to the peaks on this north side of Tucki Mountain. Then a raven flew overhead...no, soared above me. I was barely able to capture the image I did. What I liked about it was the canyon and walls around me with the mountains peaks off in the distance. Above all this was a raven just taking it all in...
Why do I take photographs like this?

Advent alles Gute.
Natural and very filigree.
The term filigree receives a lot of attention in jewelry making. Goldsmith's work and the work of a chaser attract attention. And in nature? You cannot see it from a great distance, but the close range opens this door to the filigree and delicate. Here seeds of a dry plant loosen and are blown away by the wind.
All the best for the 1st Advent.

While the migratory birds are departing for warmer places and the mammals grow their winter coats, the northern prairie undergoes a rapid and dramatic transformation. The green hills have turned brown and orange; red fruits appear on the buffaloberry bushes. Days are shorter, nights cooler. Change is in the air...
In October my friend George, the film maker, came down from Swift Current for a screening of his documentary, Wild Prairie Man, at the Palais Royale Theatre in Val Marie. The next morning he came by my house in the pitch dark and we headed out to Grasslands, watching as the southeastern sky began to glow and brighten, and then looking for a good spot to get out as the first direct rays began to sweep the prairie.
We stopped somewhere between the former Dixon and Walker ranches, now part of the national park. Here the broad plateau was broken by gullies that drain snowmelt each spring into the Frenchman River, seen here as a dark band of shadow near the top of the frame, but not far away, lined with small trees and shrubs. I used a wide angle lens to emphasize the foreground - in fact this shot is 75% foreground, and the distances look greater than they really are.
Nevertheless, it's a large valley; behind me, the hills rose up just as they do on the far side. I often imagine this place in early post-glacial times, when much of this valley would have been filled with water: the Frenchman rolling southward into the Missouri drainage, as it does today with far less volume. What a privilege to be here, now, in a place filled with wildlife, on the relatively untouched prairie, with only the breeze making small sounds through dry grasses, and sometimes carrying distant coyote voices. But my fingers were numb with the cold. Soon I'd be breaking out the winter parka, boots, gloves, mitts, and wool hat.

These are the bristles of a very colorful and funky hairbrush.
Strobist info:
The brush was illuminated by one Nikon SB900 speedlight with snoot, 40-degrees CR, 6" above camera level, and pointed down at subject at a 40-degree angle.
The SB900 was fired in Manual mode @ 1⁄16 -0.7 EV power and was triggered by two PocketWizard Plus X's.

I really like high up views. Being able to see many miles in the distance as always appealed to me. I’m fortunate that I live in an area where it’s quite easy to access long distance views. This particular view isn’t that high but I would bet that anyone who comes here would be impressed, personally I think it’s a fantastic view, it never disappoints me.
This young Wood Duck was actually pretty close to its siblings and mom was nearby, but I was able to capture it by itself as it swam down the creek.

Over many years and countless hours spent at the beach, I've been lucky to have found a handful of these Japanese glass net floats.
They come in different sizes and colors, but the most common are about 4" in diameter and a light-green in color. The floats originate from Japan and cross many nautical miles before reaching the shores of Hawai‘i to be found by lucky beachcombers.

View on black please!
Hungary has it's fair share of beautiful sunsets and this day was no exception. I was at a music festival in County Veszprém and decided to forgo some of the evening acts and take the hire car out into the country side. As we were about an hour and a a half from Budapest, this didn't take too long at all. I really need to start getting up earlier and capturing some more sunrise shots to balance everything out.
This landscape looks much better when viewed large and black. (Press L)

Richard Gere having a dialogue with George Clooney that is very far from him :-)
At left there is kiwi-tree, at right wild plum and behind George (in the back) there is quince tree.
This photo was taken on January 30th 2011 when there was real snowfalls. It's time to remember...
