Looning north just before sunset, on an exceptionally clear afternoon. Beyond the large white condo (a vacation rental) is San Simeon Point, then Point Piedras Blancas, and in the far distance the Santa Lucia range meets the sea, where Big Sur 'officially' begins.
In the foreground are Ice Age unconsolidated sands, from great dunes that spread inland during the low sea-stand when much of the ocean water was frozen into ice-sheets a mile or more thick, over Canada, New England, and much of northern Eurasia. Dry land extended to the Farallones off future San Francisco! The last Great Warming ended only about 9,000 years ago. Of course, the Earth's climate continues to warm, as does a lively debate over how much of the warming is due to humans, and how much is natural. You won't read much about the actual scientific debate, sadly, in the popular press, as this has become an item of faith among True Believers. But, geologically speaking, we're at risk of a return of the Ice -- and human CO2 emissions may help to keep that at bay. A respectable (but controversial) hypothesis.

With a face only a mother could love, only ten BQ23-7's were built by General Electric, all for Seaboard Coast Line. On December 10, 1992, #3001 (ex-SCL 5131) leads a northbound light pusher set at Big Stone Gap, Virginia on the L&N Cumberland Valley Subdivision. The L&N standard concrete milepost marks the distance to Louisville.

Judging by the worn condition of this monarch, I'm guessing it was a returnee from spending the winter in Mexico. Not far away from this guy there was what looked like a new generation monarch feeding at the same time.
From the monarch migration tracking web site, it looks like we do have overlapping generations in this area during the spring migration: journeynorth.org/monarchs/news/spring-2020/04302020-eggs-...
Do you see it now?
In her eyes?
The distance.
You've lost her.
While you were busy taking her for granted she drifted...
..a million miles away.
On the northern outskirts of Dubuque, IA, separating the John Deere Dubuque Works and John Deere Marsh, is CPKC's Edmore siding. A jointed rail, messy siding for CPKC's standards, the thing is somewhat awkwardly spaced out between the only grade crossing, stretching the distance between it and the north siding switch.
Today's subject is a merger consist of the GE variety, hauling CPKC 3-261, an extra section of the Kansas City, MO (Knoche Yard) - St. Paul, MN (Pig's Eye Yard) manifest, as it makes its way north, holding the main, paralleling Riverside Rd. If you look directly to the left of the lead locomotive's cab, you can see the tail end of the manifest still skirting along the shoreline in the far background. And yes, that's a giant antenna mounted by a magnetic base stuck right on top of the nose, wired through the cab door inside. That's one way to do it.
Taken on the CPKC Marquette Subdivision on 7/3/25.
In the distance you can see several men fishing off a stone jetty just outside the Flaming Gorge Dam near the town of Dutch John, Utah. This photo was taken on a Sunday and many locals take frequent advantage of the fishing for Rainbow Trout, Kokanee Salmon and other species here.

Social distancing for a sunset birthday party. Very responsible in trying to keep the virus in check.
