From a distance, Double-crested cormorants look like dark birds with snake- like necks. If you were to get closer, though, you would see that they are actually somewhat colorful birds. They have orange –yellow patches on their face and neck, with a bright blue mouth on the inside. Adults will develop a small double crest of stringy black or white feathers, a trait that is only found during their breeding season.
A cormorant’s diet is almost all fish, with just a few insects, crustaceans, or amphibians. Double- crested cormorant often perch on rocks, sandbars, or docks and forage at ponds, lakes, or slow moving rivers. They are heavy boned birds that are experts at diving to catch small fish. When cormorants are swimming along the water, often their long necks are the only thing you can see above water.
Unlike other birds that spend ample time in the water, a cormorant’s feathers get soaked, so they are often seen standing in the sun with their wings spread out to dry. Although wet feathers could be thought of as a negative trait for a bird that spends so much time on the water, this adaptation is thought to allow them to be effective underwater hunters.
