For my second idea I would like to explore the idea of human relationships at a distance. As summer approaches I have to enter into long distance friendships and a relationship and it’s something that is on my mind a lot. I would especially like to explore the idea of how technology lets you be so close yet so far away from someone you care about, and how great but frustrating that can be.
To achieve this I would like to try and take pictures of people trying to interact through a plate of glass, such as a couple trying to hold each other but separated, or two people having a laugh together but still clearly separated by the pane of glass. I would also attempt to put the two people in different environments on either side of the glass to further enforce the idea that they are not truly together. My biggest concern with this is finding a piece of glass that won’t be too expensive.
For this project I was really inspired by Nan Goldin’s images. All of her photos have a gritty realistic feel to them and I think she gains a lot of that through her lighting, which is something I would really like to emulate. Likewise, I was inspired by Lucas Foglia’s documentary series of people living off the grid. These images also feel very real but in a very crisp, sharp way. They also master timing and the moments feel completely frozen in time. I would like to combines Goldin’s lighting and Foglia’s sharpness and sense of time to create my images, as I think the combination will create both a feeling of weight for my images, as well as create a sense that the image is just one instance of a long road of being separated from one another.
