The four youths standing in a group some distance behind the single figure in the foreground of the picture are pickpockets. My wife and I watched them rifling through wallets they had stolen for money and credit cards and then throwing the empty wallets into nearby rubbish bins. The area round the Place des Vosges and the nearby Bastille (now just a big traffic intersection and a nearby theatre) seem rife with pickpockets: While crossing over the road after leaving the Bastille Metro station, we saw a young boy handing off a stolen wallet to a middle-aged man and another youth walking in the other direction. It was done quickly but quite openly. So BEWARE when you go to that area of Paris: Keep your valuables in a place that pickpockets can't get to. I recommend the front pocket in your jeans, which nobody can steal from without you knowing about it.

bottom umbrella pulled back several feet. Now the difference is significantly less.
