Taken in Callao, Peru on March 5, 2010.

One rewarding factor in doing photo-tripping on a familiar route many times during a year, is that you get to know individual animals and birds that hunt or live in an area.

The last several summers my wife and I drive through a very isolated area west of Cambridge where we have become accustomed to seeing a Northern Harrier peruse a large grassy field. Sometimes he will fly a couple of feet above the ground with his eyes fixed looking for voles or other small animals to pounce on. Other times he will fly long loops around the field from a height of 10-12 feet looking for prey.

In all of our times of observing, we have never seen him perch in a tree until this week. After sitting for a while with his head turned toward us and his body pointing another, he decided to fly off the tree and in doing so gave us a spectacular view of his back as well as demonstrating how large he must look to a small animal with his wings extended.

Or at least this guy thinks so. I was surprised to see this guy feeling frisky without a hen in sight. It's January buddy, calm down!

Of course it is from my window and taken with my phone this is the extent of my creativeness lately.

There were several bases along Route 66. This exhibit is odd because it has a plane identification guide to German and British planes: Route 66 ran from Chicago to Los Angeles.

Wild Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) (M)

“Wild Turkeys are very large, plump birds with long legs, wide, rounded tails, and a small head on a long, slim neck….. Turkeys travel in flocks and search on the ground for nuts, berries, insects, and snails. They use their strong feet to scratch leaf litter out of the way. In early spring, males gather in clearings to perform courtship displays. They puff up their body feathers, flare their tails into a vertical fan, and strut slowly while giving a characteristic gobbling call. At night, turkeys fly up into trees to roost in groups….. Wild Turkeys live in mature forests, particularly nut trees such as oak, hickory, or beech, interspersed with edges and fields. You may also see them along roads and in woodsy backyards. After being hunted out of large parts of their range, turkeys were reintroduced and are numerous once again.”

After photographing the Red Squirrels, I wandered down to part of an old canal. There were two Canada Geese sitting on a partially sunken log, I sat on the bank and started photographing them, well if that wasn't enough, the one swam right over to me, waddled up the bank and stood right in front of me. I pulled out some corn from my pocket held it out and he actually ate right from my hand. He then went back to the log and put on this marvelous display of plumage.

On Display in Hamlet, NC is SDP35 1114 in a stunning fresh SAL. The unit has sat on display since the early 90s being repainted 2 times since being displayed. Being a few days after Christmas there would still be a few decorations up on the unit.
