Union Township celebrated Telecommunications week by hosting an open house for our Communications Specialists (dispatchers) and their families. We felt it was not only important to recognize our dispatchers, but also an opportunity to show their families exactly what they do and how important and demanding their job really is. You may be the very best dispatcher, but without a strong support structure at home, your carrier in communications will be short lived. The attendees were shown a DVD of the events that had occurred within Union Township from the dispatcher’s perspective. The DVD received many positive comments and I would send you a copy by mail if you would like to review it. The attendees were then broken into small groups and given a tour of the dispatcher center explaining the various functions the Communications Specialists performs daily.
The open house consisted of The Union Township Police Chief presenting each Communications Specialist with a certificate of appreciation. The attendees also included the Union Township Fire Chief and his staff, representatives from Amelia Police Department (the other Police Agency that we dispatch for). Each Communication Specialist was presented with a gift bag of items that were donated by local businesses. The event was video taped by our local access TV channel

Platycephalus bassensis (Sand Flathead) caught in Great Taylors Bay, South Bruny Island. You are only allowed to take fish greater than 30cm long so we had to measure each one. I caught about 8 fish 6 of which were large enough to keep. They're rather tasty.
They have spines on the edges of their gill covers which can inflict a very painful jab so killing the fish without getting stung is a priority once you're sure you can keep it.
The UNMC “Far East Campus Dispatch” – an employee newsletter that was later simply called “The Dispatch” – took its name from joke the dean of the College of Medicine made about UNMC being the “Far East” campus of the University of Nebraska.

At approximately 10:30 pm Lincoln Fire Rescue were dispatched to an address on Mountainview Road near Konkle Road for a report of a barn on fire. It was reported that the barn is typically used to house animals, however at the time of the fire the animals were believed to be out of the barn; and only hay was being stored inside. Multiple passerbys noticed the flames and called 9-1-1; the orange glow from the fire could be seen below the escarpment illuminating the night sky up the mountain. Firefighters performed a defensive attack once they arrived to the barn fully-involved and gas tanks exploding in the rear. Crews were on scene for several hours to extinguish the blaze and required an excavator to assist with moving debris. There were no reported injuries and the cause of the fire is unknown at this time. West Lincoln Fire and Grimsby Fire provided mutual aid tankers to the scene, which was in an area without hydrants.
