America's Dispatcher gets the shot. Many times over. With the video camera churning away out of frame stage right, the Master of Documentation takes a still image while keeping the Air Force in check.

An LS&I ore load crosses Morgan Creek and was very well documented.

The D&H dispatchers were the last to be transferred to Minneapolis and it wasn't until the end of October, 1999, that we got up there. My wife was still back in Milwaukee, so I had plenty of time to wander around on my own. I headed over to Pigs Eye on a nice November afternoon and found an empty grain train just out of the yard headed west. I caught him crossing Jackson Street in downtown St Paul. The Mississippi River was right behind me. At the time I had no idea where this train was going, and probably still don't today. Even though I did dispatch the Minnesota desk, we didn't know or care how the train was coming, until he hit Shoreham. I honestly can't remember if the crews called us or the BN West Hump dispatcher did. Anyway, the leader was this GE dressed in the controversial dual flag scheme, with the RCMP shield on it. It would soon after this be repainted in the Golden Rodent style.

Talking with the AC Dispatcher, trying to get the switches at K&A Wye lines correctly to allow the train into the yard, A701 sits on the W&A mainline behind CSX 8878.

The Tree of Knowledge is a ghost gum located in front of the railway station at Barcaldine, under which the workers of the 1891 Shearer's Strike met. An icon of the Labor Party and Trades Unions, it symbolises the foundation of the organised representation of labour in Queensland.

Barcaldine sprang up in 1886 as the terminus of the Central Railway. The area was already settled by pastoralists and had previously been centred on Blackall. Large sheep stations were like small townships with their own working facilities, stores, worker's accommodation and tradesmen such as blacksmiths. The owners and managers of these stations had considerable power to dictate terms to an itinerant workforce recruited for the shearing season. Poor working conditions, low pay and the threat of competition from cheap foreign labour caused discontent within the industry.

Barcaldine was a natural focus for the development of unionism. As the railhead, the town drew many seasonal and casual workers. Besides shearers and hands there were navvies who had worked on the construction of the railway and carriers who had found their work reduced by it. Difficulties in finding work and financial hardship helped to build a sense of mateship and mutual support amongst sections of them. In 1887 the Central Queensland Carriers Union was formed, and discussions leading up to this are said to have been held under the gum tree which provided shade where carriers waited at the front of the railway station. At the same time, the Queensland Shearers' Union was formed at Blackall. Within a year it had 1300 members, indicating a perceived need for collective bargaining to obtain fair pay and working conditions. In 1888 the Central Queensland Labourers' Union was formed at Barcaldine. These three unions were the driving force behind the strike of 1891.

In Brisbane, the Trades and Labour Council was formed in 1885 and in 1889 became the Australian Labour Federation. At Barcaldine in the same year the Pastoral Employers' Association was founded in response and moved to reduce pay rates. Many workers now joined the unions, pushing membership of the Shearers Union over 3000 and the Labourer's Union to 2,250. Only severe wet weather in 1890 delayed a confrontation. By January 1891 union representatives had gathered at Barcaldine for meetings and pastoralists were pressing shearers to sign freedom of contract forms. A strike was called and employers began to import non-union labour from the south. Strikers, some of whom were armed, gathered at Barcaldine and set up a camp at Lagoon Creek and other places around the town.

The government dispatched police and soldiers to the area and the strikers responded by drilling and staging torchlight processions in the town. The tree in front of the station, the Tree of Knowledge, was the location of many meetings and a focus for protest. In March the situation escalated as carriers and railway workers went out in sympathy and military reinforcements arrived. Barcaldine became the focus of the whole country's interest and armed conflict was expected. However, heavy rain which limited movement and the arrest of leaders slowed momentum and strikers began to disperse. On 15 June the strike was officially called off. It had failed, but was to have far reaching effects. The following year, T.J. Ryan became the first representative of labour to be elected to the Queensland Parliament and soon after the Labor Party in Queensland was formed.

Because the area beneath the Tree of Knowledge was the scene of actions and decisions which had a profound effect on the future of labour and politics in Australia, it has become an icon of the Labor Party and Trades Unions. It is also important to the people of Barcaldine as a symbol of the town's identity and historical importance. This is reflected by the name chosen for the commemoration committee formed in 1987, the Tree of Knowledge Development Committee, and by the care given to the tree. In 1990 it was discovered that the tree was infested by termites and other insects and had severe health problems. Treatment by a tree surgeon, pest control and flushing of the root system with thousands of litres of water gave the tree a new lease of life. This treatment was completed in late 1993.

In 1991, there were major celebrations at Barcaldine to mark the centenary of the Shearers' Strike. In preparation for this, the area around the tree was landscaped and a memorial to the strikers erected within the enclosure.

The Herald-Dispatch building in downtown Huntington WV. The First State Bank sign at the top is on a different, taller building.

May of 2006 found three of us dispatchers strolling along the tracks on a dispatcher's road trip, a walking road trip. There were a lot of stopped trains for us to see and the railroad seemed to be like a coal conveyor belt when stuff did move. Meanwhile, over on the CJ side there were trains parked, too, but this eastbound with an Olympic torch leader was moving at Ash Street. It was an interesting trip but my feet were really sore, so sore that I couldn't wait to get back to the desk.

Aaron Schlosser gets a breath of fresh air at Reading & Northern's Port Clinton, PA dispatching office. In the late 2000s and early 2010s when I was a regular dispatcher on the D&H South, Aaron and I frequently worked opposite each other handing trains back and forth between our respective railroads at Dupont, PA. Aaron, like all the R&N guys we dealt with, was always a pleasure, and I remember many late night phone calls between my office in Minneapolis and his in Port Clinton that started out strictly business, but usually ended up being about anything and everything under the sun. Jokes, gossip, rumors, more jokes, and, "oh yeah, I'll be ready for that 12T when he gets here".

It was nice to finally see the place at the other end of all of those phone calls, and even nicer to see Aaron still in the seat after all these years.

The fuel pad in Elkhart is busy fueling eastbounds. The dispatcher has two westbound Amtrak trains to weave in, out, around traffic on both tracks.

Bend tower stood about 2 miles west, or behind, where this picture was taken. Just out of sight to the right of the train is where the Grand Trunk came in to use the South Bend station. I unofficially refer to both control points as being in South Bend.

This delay actually worked out well for me. I knew as the signal replacement program worked it's way west that this former NYC cantilever was not long for this world. And it wasn't.

Months later, a several hour signal outage took place while this structure was cut down and a new one installed. Like the previous picture in my portfolio titled "The Twins", this was also the last of it's kind.

So long to the Bend Cantilever. Again the end of an era!

The commission to design Government House was awarded to Edward Blore, architect to King William IV. By late 1834 a full set of 97 working drawings, plans and specifications were dispatched to New South Wales. The final siting of the house on Bennelong Point was determined by Colonial Engineer, Captain George Barney and Colonial Architect, Mortimer Lewis. Construction on the house began in September 1836, using local quarried sandstone. When the house was near completion in 1845 it had cost £46,000. Government House was the most sophisticated example of Gothic Revival architecture in the colony. Changes in fashion and the differing tastes of Governors and their wives resulted in regular refurbishment of the grand interiors and their contents. By 1858 a wash house and laundry had been added to the house and the servants’ hall had been enlarged. During Governor Young’s term the gardens were further developed and the eastern terrace and fountain were constructed in 1861.

In the period between the arrival and departure of the Governors, the colony and the house were administered by the Lieutenant-Governor. In 1872 the Lieutenant-Governor Sir Alfred Stephen directed Colonial Architect James Barnet to construct a porte cochère at the entrance of the house. In 1879, in anticipation of the opening of the Sydney International Exhibition, Barnet commissioned the firm of Lyon, Cottier & Co., to redecorate all of the state rooms in the fashionable ‘Aesthetic Movement’ style and the work constructing the eastern arcade or verandah was commenced in 1879. Prior to the arrival of the Earl of Jersey in 1891, a separate two-storey timber and shingle cottage, the Chalet, was constructed on the western terrace.

Federation, and the role of the Governors-General, raised questions as to the significance of State Governors. New South Wales proposed to move the State Governor from the house to make way for the Governor-General, in the belief that ‘the seat of Government must be in New South Wales’. In preparation for occupancy by the Governor-General in 1901, changes were made to the building’s fabric. A major stone replacement program using ‘yellow block’ sandstone had begun in the 1890s and this included extensions to the Ballroom and the Billiards Room. At the rear of the house, a new kitchen and scullery were provided, the servants’ hall enlarged, and a range of outbuildings constructed. Between 1898 and 1901 electricity was introduced to replace the gas lighting system.

The State Government offered Government House rent free to the Commonwealth and the New South Wales Governors were relocated to Cranbrook, Rose Bay. This arrangement continued until 1911, when the newly elected Labour Government refused to renew the Commonwealth’s lease and in December 1912 took formal possession of the house.

In 1915 the then Governor, Sir Gerald Strickland, was requested to resume occupancy of the house. In January 1996 the then Premier The Hon. Bob Carr announced that Government House would no longer be the private residence of the Governor and that both the house and grounds would be open to the public. From March 1996 to December 2013 Government House was managed by the Historic Houses Trust of New South Wales.

Today, Government House Sydney serves as the official residence of the Governor of New South Wales and is used by the Governor for official Vice Regal ceremonies, receptions, luncheons and dinners, and the weekly meeting of the Executive Council. Government House Sydney continues to be a centre for a diverse program of cultural and community events.

CP CONPIT was, at this point in history, the start of Conrail's Pittsburgh Division and the end of the Allegheny Division. The long-gone sign on the left indicates to crews that they are in a different division. This is also where CTCing of the line began. Starting at CONPIT and going west, all the towers were closed and gone by this point, taken over by one dispatcher in Pittsburgh.

The track three westbound signal bridge is, of course, long gone, taken out by a derailment some years later. The whistle sign for the 'crossing' on the slow track is gone. The eastbound signal bridge on the main line is gone. CR 3278 is now NS 3001. The westbound signals live on, though, as well as the Conemaugh Line signal bridge - for now. New signals are in place for all the eastbound signals. A careful eye can glimpse that there are two signal heads on the Conemaugh Line signal bridge.

1975 promotional photo of a postal Jeep DJ-5. Thirty five years later they have been retired by the USPS, but you will see one occasionally in use by a rural mail carrier.

Picture is from an unusual AM General advertising brochure for the USPS. Individual offices did not buy vehicles, so why was this piece found in a post office? There are about 8 photos, on Kodak paper, bound into this piece.

These blue ones were phased out in favor of the all white with reflective stripes, to be more visible when on the street or parked. As we got into the aught decade, they were no longer big enough for all the mail generated by the advent of online selling and the use of Priority Mail.
