The Columbus Monument (Monument a Colom, or Monumento a Colón or Mirador de Colón) is a 197 foot (60m) tall monument to Christopher Columbus at the lower end of La Rambla, Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. It was constructed for the Exposición Universal de Barcelona (1888) in honor of Columbus' first voyage to the Americas. The monument serves as a reminder that Christopher Columbus reported to Queen Isabella I and King Ferdinand II in Barcelona after his first trip to the new continent. At the very top of the monument stands a 24 foot (7.2m) tall bronze statue atop a 131 foot (40m) tall Corinthian column. The statue was sculpted by Rafael Atché and is said to depict Columbus pointing towards the New World with his right hand, while holding a scroll in the left. It is a commonly held belief that instead of pointing to the west towards the New World, the statue points east towards Columbus' supposed home city of Genoa. This, however, is not true, as the statue points south-southeast (a more southerly direction than the adjacent Rambla Del Mar and almost a perfect extension of the direction of La Rambla, Barcelona) and in effect is pointing at a point somewhere near the city of Constantine, Algeria. To point at Genoa in northern Italy the statue would have to face east-northeast and point up the coastline. It is more likely that the statue is situated in the current way simply to have Columbus point out to sea underscoring his achievements in naval exploration. The statue is atop a socle, on which the word "Tierra" (land) is inscribed. The column, hung with a device bearing an anchor, stands on an octagonal pedestal from which four bronze winged victories or Phemes take flight towards the four corners of the world, above paired griffins. Four buttresses against the octagonal pedestal bear portrait medallions that depict persons related to Columbus: Martίn Alonzo Pinzón, Vicente Yáñez Pinzón, Ferdinand II of Aragon, Isabella I of Castile, Father Juan Pérez, Father Antonio de Marchena, Andrés de Cabrera (Marqués de Moya), Beatriz Fernández de Bobadilla (Marquessa de Moya). Seated against the buttresses are four figures that represent four realms of Spain: the Principality of Catalonia, and the kingdoms of León, Aragon, and Castile.

To find the direction to travel, one lays the edge of the compass from the point where you are, to the point you want to arrive at. Then the wheel is adjusted to determine the degree from north one needs to travel. It's more complicated than I thought!

Wibsey keep the Dewsbury Moor defence guessing at Northfield Road through inside centre Nicky Fontaine (left) and scrum-half Luke Helliwell. But it proved to be a bad day at the office for the Warriors, who were outscored 10 tries to four as the Maroons racked up a 56-22 victory in Division Three of amateur rugby league's flagship Kingstone Press Cider National Conference League.

Located to the east or Portstewart, on the shore side of the Portrush Road, is a Second World War bombing direction arrow and observation post. The purpose of this arrow was to direct bombers overhead in the direction of approach towards the floating targets out to sea on their practice bombing runs.

The arrow is in great condition, and measures 75 feet long, with each leg of the arrow head being 30 feet long. It sites on a bearing of 20 degrees.

Beside the arrow is a collapsed observation post, some 12 feet square. These structures would have housed an observer to monitor the passing of the aircraft and give indication as to the accuracy of the bombing practice. After the war it may have been easier to collapse the structure than demolish and remove it, hence the current state.

This site lies on a public coastal footpath and can be easily accessed and viewed on aerial imagery.

Begins April 29!

The walk up Mont-St-Michel is a wonderful series of twists and turns and tunnels and unexpected views. And when the wind is blowing from the right direction it gets channeled through the narrow streets, and you better not be holding an umbrella or it'll suck you up and I swear it could carry you over to Bournemouth.
