Direct mail work for Exel Management

This is a washing station just outside of Jimma.

These washing stations are doing some great things, and I can't wait to taste more of their coffee. While Counter Culture is mainly committed to coffees from YCFCU, I really wanted to see what is going on out here.

My first impression was, overall these washing stations are great. Farmers have more access to the global market through Technoserve. Buyers are rushing in to try to buy these coffees. The quality and consistency of the coffee is much better. Overall really great.

One thing that I am not sure about is the washing station setup. Coffees are going through eco-pulpers that use very little water (which is great) but they are not fermenting the coffee, and, instead, just doing a post-pulping soak. I personally feel there is a way to set up the eco-pulpers so that you can get the benefits of fermentation but use the de-mucilager as the way to wash while conserving a lot of water.

When tasting a lot of these coffee (not all), I got the sense that they could be slightly more crisp and brisk, and that some flatness – and actually some good sweetness – was coming from mucilage that was not removed. (But that is just my opinion.)

The opening of the Roger Riou Maternity Center in La Tortue, Haiti.

As of July, Direct Relief has reopened the maternity wards at four different hospitals in Haiti with equipment and supplies. This is half the commitment to provide eight hospitals with incentive kits, medications, and equipment to upgrade them to EMOC centers.

These sites were specifically chosen due to their remoteness, lack of other healthcare facilities nearby, and high rates of HIV.

From our staff in Haiti:

“The people were very happy about the equipment. The mayor and the main justice of the peace attended the ceremony as the main town officials. The mayor tracked me down and mentioned the hospital used to have an operating room and was desperate to get the hospital back to when it really was a center of excellence.

As you can imagine there was a nice reception with a lot of local food. I did have to say few words. There was a sign that was in several places, such as the reception hall and around the hospital including the rooms where the patients were staying. The sign says "A woman giving life should not die while giving life". Georges was there as MSH representative and there was a USAID person who also said a few words.

I took 5 IV poles in the car and as soon as I got there they were taken to the hospital and the next morning I saw they were already using it on a patient. Several people in the audience including the mayor admitted how dedicated the La Tortue staff really is.”

acceso a financiamientos, tecnologías, capacitación e infraestructura”,

Sado is overcome with emotion when she is asked what Edna means to her—“She is like my mother,” she says. The remarkable Edna Adan, a woman with over five decades of midwifery experience and a fierce passion for instilling knowledge in young people, wraps her arm around Sado's shoulder. “At my age you have to pass the torch, and I choose to pass it to them,” Edna says. “You have no idea how many lives she has saved, and this is why I continue to do what I do.”

Industrial Unit in Brown Street

Synopsis: Directed by Diego Luna, "Cesar Chávez" chronicles the birth of a modern American movement led by famed civil rights leader and labor organizer, Cesar Chavez. Torn between his duties as a husband and father and his commitment to bringing dignity and justice to others, Chavez embraced non-violence as he battled greed and prejudice in his struggle for the rights of farm workers. His triumphant journey is a remarkable testament to the power of one individual's ability to change the system.

Special Event for this week’s Korean Film Nights:

The Concubine (2012) directed by Kim Dae Seung

The Korean Cultural Centre UK presented another special event for the forthcoming film screening of The Concubine involving a Hanbok dressing-up session and Korean Insam tea (Ginseng).

The Hanbok is a traditional Korean outfit worn by both men and women on special occasions in South Korea. It is the main costume in The Concubine, playing a significant role within the mise-en-scene. The lead characters Jo Yeo-Jeong, Kim Dong-Wook and Kim Min-jun wear Hanboks as a way of expressing their social status, as was done during both the Goryeo and Joseon Dynasty. The Concubine is set in the Joseon Dynasty; the texture of fabric and details for the designs of the Hanbok in the film noticeably differentiate the social status between the King, Queen and lower social status such as concubines and servants. Today, the Hanbok does not necessarily represent one’s social status. For this event, some audience members dressed up in these beautiful outfits and we took some snapshots.

Additionally, we served Insam (ginseng) tea for all guests to try. Insam tea is traditional tea from Korea made from ginseng, pine nuts and honey. It’s known to have the following health benefits, such as improved digestion, lowering cholesterol levels and boosting the immune system, to name just a few.

First Comic Book Appearance: Kobra #1

(February 1976)

This is a force-directed graph of the lineups used by the Columbus Crew in its inaugural season, 1996. Nodes are colored as follows:

Dark blue nodes are players; all other nodes are games.

Light blue nodes are games coached by Timo Liekoski (April 13 - July 31)

Orange nodes are games coached by Tom Fitzgerald (August 4 - October 2)

Dark orange nodes are regular season games

Light orange nodes are playoff games

Force-directed graphs are self-organizing as each node attempts to position itself according to its links with other nodes. In this case, players are linked to the games in which they appeared, with the strength of the link determined by the number of minutes played. By encouraging this self-organizing behavior, surprising patterns can emerge - which is the case here.

The games played have clumped into three groups - which are generally structured chronologically. Perhaps not surprisingly, the games coached by Timo Liekoski are generally separate from games coached by Tom Fitzgerald. A bigger surprise is that the "Liekoski era" is actually grouped in two periods, which are also structured chronologically. The group of games at lower left are the eight games played between July 1 and August 4. The games at right were played earlier, between April 13 and June 30.

It appears that the games are clumped in this fashion more because there are certain players who rose to prominence at those times. For example, the grouping of Fitzgerald games at the top are being pulled away not because of Fitz, but because on August 10th two players debuted who went on to play in every game the rest of the season: Rob Smith and Brad Friedel.

Other players' presences are influencing the game clumping. Mark Watson appeared in every game through June 27th, and his influence is part of what groups those games to the lower left. Other players in that position are Bo Oshoniyi, Paul Young, and Brandon Ward.
