The light of this photo comes from the left side and it casts a great shadow and has detail in the lighting. The type used here is direct due to the casts.
shot with a ring light behind through a diffusing layer of acetate and measured white balance on camera. Tweaked to square in Digikam and cloned out a couple of specks in the background in Gimp.

This is an example of direct lighting because you can tell that the light source is in front of the object and you can see the shadows of the flowers.
I watched these guys for about 5 minutes throwing snowballs at each other. They had terible aim, as they were all missing.
This chap bent down to make another and BOOM a direct hit in the back.
