Records were carefully salvaged after the fire. This file has many pages that are totally blackened and so charred that even a harsh breath could send it flying through the air. St. Louis, MO, June 2, 2023. National Archives photo by Sean Derrick

Carrying on with revisiting some old black and white negatives, as part of my digitization exercise, this is a frame showing Rockway Falls in March 1995. Rockway Falls is the where the Fifteen Mile Creek flows down the Niagara Escarpment, west of St Catharines, Ontario. Taken in March, the amount of water flow reflects Spring run-off rather than the Summer or Autumn levels, at which times only a trickle is typical. For a comparison, see one of my recent Flickr posts (www.flickr.com/photos/jwvraets/22754192391/in/dateposted/ or www.flickr.com/photos/jwvraets/22477970032/in/photostream/ ). In my recent visit, the gorge has a significant number of huge slabs of rock obstructing the access, unlike the relatively easy access I enjoyed in 1995. While I am enjoying converting these images and making them more accessible, the reasons why I welcomed the change to all digital workflow are very apparent, one of the most significant is the whole issue of retouching out dust and other imperfections. None-the-less, more to come. - JW
Date Taken: 1995-03
Tech Details:
Taken using a tripod-mounted, 1960s-era Minolta Autocord 6x6 twin-lense-reflex camera, Kodak TMax100 BW film developed in D76 1:1, scanned on an Epson Perfection v500 Photo at 3200 dpi and saved to 16-bit TIFF file. PP in free Open Source RAWTherapee: reverse the negative by enabling and then inverting the B&W Gamma curve, adjusting the lightness and contrast of the L-A-B control, enable micro-contrast, apply noise reduction and save to TIFF file. PP in free Open Source GIMP: fine-tune the tone curve to improve the brightness range, use the spot healing tool to remove imperfections, sharpen, add fine black and white frame, add bar and text on left, scale to 1800 wide for posting.

The dull color of the rattlesnake’s scales indicates that it is close to shedding its skin, but the milky colored eye is a great sign that shedding is close. Normally the eye is black.

Tentative set up (there's more equipment to come) of our new space for digitization; I'll be working about half of my time in here for the foreseeable future.
Some things never change. I preferred this older photograph, digitized from film, to the newer shots that I took in June, 2014. The guards may be different, but the location and the uniforms are the same.
