I woke, cold and alone,
adrift in the open sea;
caught up in regrets,
and tangled in nets,
instead of your arms wrapped around me.
And I wept but my tears are anathema here,
just more water to fill my lungs.
I hear someone scream,
“God what is it we have done?”
I am drowning in a digital sea;
Here my voice goes, to ones and zeros,
I’m slipping beneath the sound.
A song from somewhere below,
deadly and slow begins.
Both sickly and sweet,
now picking up speed,
and ushering in the world’s end.
And the ghost of Descartes screams again in the dark,
“Oh how could I have been so wrong?”
But above the screams still the sirens sing their song.

it is paradoxical that the more you believe in the governing myths of life, the more you fall victim to its inherent randomness
Busy preparing for a week camping in the Lake District with my sister-in-law and her two kids. When the four of them get together, they're a riot, as you can see, always off on an adventure... ;)
They're so lucky to have the breadth of entertainment available to them nowadays. When I was their age I was always bored. Of course my parents would tell me how lucky we were to have TV and that when they were young they had to 'make their own entertainment'. And of course when my parents were young my grandparents probably said "When we were young we weren't allowed to make our own entertainment, we sat quietly and read the bible", or something, and my great grandparents probably said "When we were young we weren't allowed to read the bible, we had to work down the mine", etc, etc.
What will these four be saying to their kids in 30/40 years time I wonder?
"Digital Natives" by the way is a term coined by Mark Prensky - who I met once, briefly - to differentiate the post-PC generation from the rest of us 'Digital Immigrants'. He wrote a very good book on the subject before deciding the theory was unsound and abandoning it. Still, I remember when we bought Mac Jr a Children's Encyclopaedia a few years ago and after a quick read he said "I get it! It's a bit like google, but in a book!". Quite so...
This image is part of a new series of digital images I'm very excited about that use predominantly creative-commons photos as springboards for experimentation with color and technique in order to evoke a variety of physical, mental and emotional responses in viewers.

Digital Spray Installation
Rhys Mendes Gallery

The Digital Orca, a sculpture by Douglas Coupland located outside the Vancouver Convention Centre. Douglas Coupland is, amongst many other things, famous for popularising the phrase 'Generation X', and lives in West Vancouver. The sculpture is made from a steel armature with an aluminium cladding, and has LEDs inset into the cubes that twinkle at night.
The clouds were just coming in after another beautiful day, and give some interesting texture to the sky, I think. A few minutes later, they were reflecting the city lights and had turned orange, which was much less appealing.
The sculpture is approximately 25ft high. To emphasise this, I placed the camera low and used my Sigma ultra-wide angle lens -- I seem to be using this quite a lot at the moment. I like the way that the Shaw Tower, the third tallest building in Vancouver, fits neatly into the space under the flipper!
As a lot of the sculpture is black, I used my flash to provide some fill light on the near side -- this was set at 1/4 power and manually fired a few times from the left and right side of the sculpture during the exposure. (Running around firing a flashgun is always a good way to get some funny looks!)
StudentFest proposal AD -
Theme: "You Are Free to Choose"
The main ideea behind this concept was to show the hard way for the students in Romania to choose for their future career. U will be told that you have many possibilities but in fact you have NONE! This ideea is emphasized by the labirynth that has 3 entrances but no exit!
DLDwomen (Digital-Life-Design) Conference is taking place for 4th time in Munich, July 15-16, 2013 "Breaking new ground"
I seem to be coming back to this image a lot and I'm not sure why. I've been torn up recently since I don't have a studio and the painting has come to a complete halt. Feeling very anxious, completely broke and wondering when the world will stop throwing rocks at me.
7th December 2015: I still have an oil painting based on this if anyone is interested. See: www.flickr.com/photos/chrispoole74/9022324243/in/album-72...
