Fancy rose

The original picture of the mother and child was shot at the Ponce De Leon Historical Park in Punta Gorda, Florida at sunset. The park is a mecca for sunset watchers. While porpoises are sometimes spotted here, I added a porpoise and birds to create a more magical and enchanting scene.

In the photo, a young girl was leaning forward (probably fascinated by the waves) as her mother reached out to make sure that she didn't topple off the edge of the seawall. With the addition and placement of the porpoise, doesn't there seem to be a connection between the two in this composite?

I am in desperate need of some color, and I still have several weeks to wait until the first of our wildflower's will open. Snow is slowly melting around our cabin, a few robins have arrived, and temperatures are promised to reach into the fifties by next week. Meanwhile I'll be dreaming of flower time . . .

I have been finding solace lately in going into my bedroom, locking the door, strategically opening the blinds enough to let light in but not enough to flash the many dog walkers that pass by, and shooting a self portrait. The blank white wall used to be my enemy as I always wondered how I would make it different enough from portrait to portrait and how I could distract from it. But lately, when I feel like I'm doing the same thing over and over, oddly enough I find myself back here, brainstorming, hair flipping, using my 10-second-click-and-dash timer, and just enjoying the solitude of 30 minutes with my camera. Life is so good, and moments like these truly let me breathe it all in.

A little information on "Spirit Houses" . . . The graves are covered with stones, dug out from the rocky terrain and a blanket is placed over it as it is meant to warm and comfort the soul. Wooden spirit houses that families have built are then placed over the grave. Some are more elaborate than others and have glass windows and even porches and cupolas. The size of the houses is often determined by the importance of the person in the community or by the extent of the grief of the family remaining. The spirit houses are painted in the family colors and married couples often painted theirs as a combination of the colors of both families. Little houses built inside a house represent the graves of a mother and her child who passed away together. Prized possessions, such as hunting knives, guns and books were placed in the spirit houses as well. What a loving tradition.
