First shot to digital inking using Painter X.
I used a wacom tablet but will be more easy with a Cintiq, but I can't afford it.
I will try more stuff later this week.
This color study was done to test RetroSupply Co.'s Mr. Marker brushes. The line work is executed using the bullet marker brush, and the color work using the round marker brush.
There's a pinch of texture work on top using the #collageretreat freebies, for a pinch more depth.

Sometimes friends will ask you for the strangest things...Like this commissioned piece, where my only guidelines were to include a Otter/Pony Queen and her Eagle/Canine King counterpart. As it was meant as a (really) old school "home sweet home" image, I jumped at the chance to try and do an old fashioned ink drawing like you used to see in the periodicals at the turn of the century. I had so much fun inking in Procreate, I'm thinking of doing a commented timelapse for this one! :)
And here is a commented timelapse; youtu.be/Kgsp0VHx6NA

Phoenix, 1981
My sister and I spent a week visiting our Uncle Mike (mom's brother), Aunt Joyce, and cousins Mikey and Jennfier. Mikey and used to be real pals before they up and moved to Arizona following the Sylmar earthquake in 1971. (Aunt Joyce is SERIOUSLY afraid of earthquakes.) I had just finished ninth grade; in California, that's the conclusion of junior high -- which were the most horrifying three years of my life, pretty much. It was a huge relief to just forget about life back home for a week. Thankfully, high school proved a bit more of a positive experience.
So, check out my hair! It was out of control back then; even when I combed it, clumps of it just moved back into whichever particular direction they chose. What a mop top. Ah well -- within five years my hair was well on its way to leaving my head anyway. Oh, and I see my mustache. I had a mustache at twelve.
That's Mikey on the right, a couple months before he turned fourteen; I was fifteen.
One of my favorite Flickr folks, Ray, has quite a few interesting old and new Polaroids in his photostream. Check his stuff out. And he's more fun than a barrel ride over Niagara Falls.

Backlit version. Laurie Anderson's autograph on my Newton MessagePad 2000.
From her book signing at Oxford Books on Pharr Road in Atlanta on April 13, 1994, at 11:29pm, just after her performance at the Roxy nearby. Herself an official Apple Master, she thoughtfully asked "Is it working for you?" to which I replied "Yes, I love it."
In an article about her performance in the following week's Creative Loafing, the reviewer mentioned the freaks that showed up to meet her, including "the homeless guy whose backpack unfolded into a diorama of Laurie Anderson and William S. Burroughs onstage together" and "the guy who had her sign an Apple Newton."
(She actually signed my original MessagePad, and I beamed to note to this newer model when I upgraded.)

As I was going through the favories, one other thing I noticed: my contact "botya" has left flickr. Hopefully only temporarily, as he had a great stream.
Procreate is one of my favorite drawing apps for iOS. Its basic brush collection has some gems. The 6B pencil, along with the tinderbox inking brush, are what gave me these results.
A while back, someone shared this buried skull they found while weeding. I bookmarked it, knowing I'd revisit it.
I first did a pencil pass, thinking I'd stop there. I'm aware that a mushroom would not likely feature roots as shown, but frankly, who cares. I then kept playing with the basic inking brushes in Procreate, and very quickly ended with the inked version. I added a layer for subtle shading using the same 6B pencil brush, et voilà , inked cat skull.

Today's is "Bunny" from Twitter artist navyinks's not exactly serious Bunny list
I thought this would be really obscure, but apparently they made a questionable cartoon with her a few years ago... In any case, here's Bunnicula!

Brooklyn, New York, 2008
No sooner had I arrived in my hotel on Saturday, than Raymond had talked my ass into hopping the F train to Brooklyn to meet him and his wife at this event at Gleason's Gym.
This was shot nearby, on our way from Gleason's to the subway. A mini-Cooper parked and with moisture from the snow shower then falling. In the background is a bit of the Manhattan Bridge.
Wikipedia, of course, offers some background on the DUMBO acronym.
I wish I'd brought more lenses with me, but I was lazy and packed only the kit lens. I didn't get any decent shots in the gym, but I thought this shot was sort of interesting.

this is the second piece of work based on the idea of urban island cities. The colouring this time around was done digitally to achieve brighter colours. I also attempted to create a coloured-pencil look to juxtapose with some of the strong graphic blocks here. Since aztec prints (any tribal prints) were "in" in fast fashion, i thought that it was good to use that as a base for the negative space as well as a critique on consumerism.
What do you guys think? how can this piece be improved and would you wear it if printed on a shirt?
Update:
I've submitted this to threadless and its up for scoring! :)
have a look if you have the time here -- threadless.com/submission/460908/Aztec_Island_Cities

New York City, 2006
Ray works some attitude below Manhattan. We were on our way to Union Square after our Flickrwalk. After the other talented photobugs had headed to their respective homes, we met up with Ray's super cool wife, Meesha, for dinner and dessert in Chelsea.
I think this was just before Ray, getting all fashion photographer on us, had shot one of my favorite photos of, well, me.
Day 27 of my 31 prompts from 31 lists drawtober!
Today's is "Nails" from Twitter artist Nooby2D's punktober list.
This image is heavily inspired by the song King of Nails by not very punk but also kind of punk Sparklehorse. Posting a bit late today, but I sort of got carried away.
Here's the cover ov the ebook (BTW I already read this magnificent - yet in Italian only AFAIK - ebook from Paolo Costa; Free download here).

I really couldn't make up my mind with this one. I was really struggling with the composition, wound up taking out a bunch of elements and changing the aspect ratio. Not sure how i feel about this one, but i couldnt look at it or change it any more. Decided to post it and be done with it. Thoughts?
