Aneurus avenius Aradidae, male + larvae

ID-cred: CC Coulianos

Size: 5 mm (adult specimen)

You typically find these peculiar, almost two-dimensional, bugs under bark. I'm somewhat puzzled by they "bullseye" pattern on the back of the larvae – any theories?

Single exposure, Canon 5DmkII + Canon MP-E65 + Canon 270EX flash with yoghurt-bottle diffuser.

High up on the moors near Malham in the Yorkshire Dales. The warm light from the rising sun was diffused by the early morning fog rising out of the valley below.

Another image from my Still Life series, a project for a client's website. I added just a touch of Diffuse Glow to this one. If I added a lot of glow it blew the whites out too much and destroyed the detail in the silver and glass objects. I tried to find a balance between having the richness of the colors and textures, but also a delicate soft quality.

This was shot indoors with lights set up, and a shallow depth of field to accentuate the foreground and allow the trees in the garden to act as soft background.

These recent photos are certainly a departure from my usual landscapes and Old World scenes, but I thought I'd share my recent projects with you anyway. This set of Still Lifes with flowers was a collaborative effort. The owner of the business and I worked together to create these little scenes that appear as a slide show on the home page of her website: www.letuberose.com .

Light modifiers are devices that can improve or redirect the lighting in photos. You can use a modifier to change the ambiance of a scene, flatter a subject, soften harsh light, or produce split lighting...

The focus this week is on unusual modifiers

Some light painted white tulips begging to be photographed...similar to another I did a couple of years ago. The only light was my LED Lenser T7 on low covered with a few layers of waxpaper to diffuse the light even more.

Best viewed large on black...

Way up in the foliage, only weak sunlight getting through. Beautiful bird, but flighty.

Light diffuser on a speedlight.

During the last days, sunlight seems to have found its way back to Iceland. Shown here is Bessastaðir in front of Mt Keilir, which is located on the Reykjanes peninsula. The afternoon sun cast the mountain and the entire peninsula into a beautiful, diffuse, golden-warm light that felt like a first promise of the summer to come (although it is way to early for thinking of summer). I especially like Keilir for its highly symmetric shape and the way it dominates its surroundings.
