Used a diffusing material from some cheap LCD monitor cover which was translucent.
Shots are SOOC jpegs
Interesting to note what seemed like a huge improvement in light quality (softness) and quantity seen in the overexposed middle shot at 1/4 power.
Had to reduce power down to 1/16 for the same distance.
Lower 2 images were looking at flash head zoomed to 35mm bvs 85mm. not sure if that made any difference. yet to play.

Experimenting with the Fong Diffuser attached to my flashgun, with the flashgun in one hand tethered to the camera via the Vello cable.

Two (or was it three?) SB-80 DXs, with dome diffusers on them, behind the mother. She is in a small 4'x5' "hallway" that connects three different rooms. This 4x5 space was closed on three sides by doors and a wall, creating a light tent effect.
PP: This is actually five different photos, one of each leg, one of each person's head, and one of the mother's arms and torso. The infant photo was actually taken several months prior to the mother photo(s). All these photo elements were melded together with masks in PS. I warped the mother's torso to create a more upright and squared look to her back and shoulder. Several different adjustment layers created the coloring and added to the high key effect of my lighting. Also added lighting effects to the infant's head to help it look more like a part of the image.

I made a diffuser for my 400D's pop-up flash by cutting slits into an empty film canister...it works quite well in reducing the intensity of the flash and hence preserving the warmth of the picture. Thanks Christopher Saw for the idea! I recommend everyone without a proper diffuser to try this out, it's great fun!

A wonderfully talented flickrite recommend the great lighting book which i am reading at a record breaking snails pace.
its called light, science and magic by F Hunter, S Biver and P Fuqua
anyhow I thought I would start to try out some of the examples in the book. this is direct reflection vs diffused reflection. in the first the detail on the black door stop is far more distinguishable, in the second the texture of the frame is far more detailed.

Found these bottles at The Container Store (generic for travel). Just looked like the right size for a flash diffuser. I chose to cut off as little as possible but you could make the diffuser somewhat shorter to your liking. Bottle cost about $2.99 and fits the inside retainer of the Vivtar 285HV perfectly.
Here is the cut off DIY bottle diffuser on the Vivtar 285HV flash. Put a small bead of gaffer tape at the bottom to make it stay in. Stuck it on the long sides (top and bottom) to make it snap in and stay.
