A wonderfully talented flickrite recommend the great lighting book which i am reading at a record breaking snails pace.
its called light, science and magic by F Hunter, S Biver and P Fuqua
anyhow I thought I would start to try out some of the examples in the book. this is direct reflection vs diffused reflection. in the first the detail on the black door stop is far more distinguishable, in the second the texture of the frame is far more detailed.

The Disney Store's 2009 Limited Edition Snow White 17'' Collector's Doll. Photographed in natural diffused light, in her full regalia. She is standing, supported by the included custom doll stand.
Her gown consists of a deep blue velvet bodice with gold beaded trim and a red jewel, red and blue puffy short sleeves with gold beads and white ruffles, a full length yellow satin skirt with a embroidered golden heart and floral design, and a large white and gold collar, with white ruffles on the inside, and gold beaded lacey trim. She has a red glittery bow on the top of her head, and a large red heart shaped pendant on a gold chain around her neck. Attached to the back of her gown is an oversized deep red velvet cape with a red satin liner, There are gold beads and threads throughout the velvet outside of the cape.
Under her dress she wearing yellow high heeled shoes. She is holding a blue bird friend on her right hand (to our left) and the poison apple in her left.
She stands 16.5 inches tall in her high heels. She has full articulation in her neck, upper waist, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips and knees.
She has pale white skin and jet black hair. Her head is small and round. Her face is exquisitely drawn, with a serious and stately expression. She has large brown eyes looking straight ahead, thick black rooted eyelashes, thin black eyebrows, a small rounded nose, very full closed crimson red lips, and pale pink rouge on her cheeks. Her hair is short and has the iconic curls at the ends.
This simple diffuser is made from scrap material and just snaps on to the DCR250 lens. Simple and easy diffuser for my macro shots.

Found these bottles at The Container Store (generic for travel). Just looked like the right size for a flash diffuser. I chose to cut off as little as possible but you could make the diffuser somewhat shorter to your liking. Bottle cost about $2.99 and fits the inside retainer of the Vivtar 285HV perfectly.
Here is the cut off DIY bottle diffuser on the Vivtar 285HV flash. Put a small bead of gaffer tape at the bottom to make it stay in. Stuck it on the long sides (top and bottom) to make it snap in and stay.
The LED matrix is bright, even at its lowest PWM. The minimum PCB order from China is 5, so the board is designed so one of the spares can be mounted over the matrix to dim it.

Method: Use a tripod/gorilla pod, put my camera on a long exposure and small aperature, and low ISO, then use a light to write, whether writing on a wall or in the air. Its really easy.
