Late-day light, Mosquito Creek valley, Clearfield County, within the Quehanna Wild Area of Moshannon State Forest.
This came with a bunch of flowers of all things, it's used to transport them with water soaked paper to keep the flowers fresh. I cut a hole in the end where the flowers go just big enough to fit a strobe.
This photo is diffuse because we know that there is light in this picture but we dont know where it is coming from.
Direct flash has harsh contrasts and harsh shadows. The bounce off the ceiling has good tones but casts a shadow across the eyes. The diffused technique has less harsh contrasts and eliminated the eye shadowing, but still has some harsh shadowing around the ear.

You put a candle in the bottom and a few drops of sented oil in the top. I bought it at Whole Foods.
These diffusers are made in ABS plastic, by Ian McConnachie. He sells them on eBay for around £30. Here's the link.

They greatly improve the light from the crappy standard flash head of the Canon. Will put them through their paces, in the weeks to come. Used them on the recent woodlouse and springtail shots. I'm hoping that Ian will be able to construct a large one that will fit over the head of a Canon Speedlight and then I can do away with the Opteka mini-softbox.
My flash diffuser is a shampoo bottle.
Yes, I know it's ugly as hell but when I use it I always get a nice smile from people.

Super Import Nights – The Ultimate Motorshow is notably the biggest and only tuner car show in Singapore that is returning for the third successive year. Was there on 19-Sep-09! Lots of amazing automobiles and of course without aying hot car models, especially import models from taiwan, thailand and USA.
Some pics to share =D
All taken with D700 + 24-70mm f2.8 OR 50mm f1.4D with SB900 diffused.

I ran into an in progress fashion shoot for the new line of Uggs shoes that are about to be released.
The female model was Elsa Sylvan I believe and the male model's first name was Ryan. Not sure of his last name but he told me he has done a bunch of work.
I snagged some shots of the shoot and very much enjoyed watching the professionals make it happen.
Awesome experience to say the least.

N+EW "No More Electronic Waste" light. These lamps are produced by rotomolding, in a mix of low density plastic with crushed electronic waste plastic. This process shapes the diffuser molded in an also recycled iron matrix. Its base is produced with smelted aluminum of beer and drink tins amongst others.

Edit 21 Oct 2009: I am no longer using this diffuser.
It's a Sto-Fen and I've covered the outside in gaffers tape (to keep light from leaking out if it) and I cut out the front end plastic and replaced it with some diffuser plastic from Bogen.

Diffusers that are part of a cold water upwelling system are shown at Tippy Pond on the Manistee River during the system’s initial deployment in August 2012. Upwelling systems are being used at Consumers Energy hydroelectric dams to cool summer outflow temperatures to improve downstream fish habitat.
A subset of pyranometers used in the diffuse irradiance study collect data from the roof of the SGP radiometer calibration facility.
Unlike the ARM SGP and TWP sites, which have periods of darkness and daylight each day of the year, the NSA site experiences extended periods of both darkness and daylight. Additionally, due to the harsh conditions present there, the broadband radiometers are equipped with electric heaters inside the ventilators to keep hoarfrost and snow from undue interference with the measurements. This IOP, which took place from 2006 to 2007, provided a long term (1-year) set of measurements needed to investigate and refine the IR loss correction methodology for the ARM NSA data.

A diffuser hack for a Omnibounce/Lambency type of lighting.
The PE-HD bottle it was made from once held lactose. It was left over from one of the kids' medical treatments. If you know what lactose is used for then you'll understand why it's appropriate that it now spills light.
The SB-600 has its 14mm wide adapter folded out and is set for 1/8th power. Capture was 2 seconds at ISO 100, f5. The flash was the only light source.
I still have to check the setup for any colour cast.
A quick test shows that it will cast about the same amount of light on a subject as a flash bounced off the ceiling (for the same flash output and similar distances for flash-subject-ceiling-flash).
