For about a year or so, Interail operated coal trains from Newstan that provided the fuel for Vales Point Power Station, which is situated on the shores of Lake Macquarie.
There were about four return trips a day, so these trains were a prominent feature of the day's traffic.
These operations were finally taken over by QR National and the old locomotives sidelined. 4th January, 2006.

Here 42101 is charging around Cawley Curve from Helensburgh, Waterfall and the top of the grade now in her sights. The scene looked a lot better just a bit earlier when the sun was out.

After the Kiama Picnic Train, hauled by 5917 and 3526, was safety out of the way, 42103 headed off, and I had it on good authority, that it ended up on SSR grain, marshalled RL306 + 42103 +G514 + BRM001.
Apparently, 42103 was headed for Melbourne, then to Adelaide with GM22 to pick up the AK cars.

Westbound NR58 and AN2 on 6WP2 approach their last meeting with the Stuart Highway at the road overbridge between Wirraminna and Kultanaby Crossing loops, some 270km north of Port Augusta. In terms of the journey that is still ahead of this train across the Nullarbor Plains to Perth, we are still barely past the city outskirts of Port Augusta!
