It's the diesel gala and visiting unique British Railways Clayton Type 1/Class 17 Bo-Bo diesel D8568 is dropping down the gradient into Rothley with the returning 14.35 ex-Loughborough.

Built between 1962 and 1965 the Class 17 proved to be one of the least successful of the Type 1s & withdrawals took place from 1968 to 1971, meaning some members of the class had a working life of less than 5 years. Several were sold to industrial users; D8568 worked at Ribblesdale Cement in Clitheroe and is the only example preserved.

NJ Transit GP40PH-2 no. 4108 is seen operating long-hood forward as it hauls train YM32 through Harrison Station on the Northeast Corridor. The train is an as-needed shop move from Morrisville Yard in Pennsylvania to the Meadows Maintenance Complex in Kearny, NJ, which on this day consisted of nine MultiLevel coaches, one Comet, and four Arrow III EMUs.

Caltrain F40PH-2C no. 921 rumbles through the midday on the platform at San Jose Diridon Station, while one of the new KISS trainsets arrives silently on the adjacent track. Though their siblings have been displaced by the new electric trains and sent off to a new life in Peru, three of the venerable F40 locomotives - 920, 921, and 922 - still ride Bay Area rails on the South County Connector. These three locomotives were rebuilt by MPI between 2017 and 2020, and were looking quite well cared for!

The iconic little house used by Australian band Midnight Oil for the cover image on their 1987 album release 'Diesel and Dust'.

Very much a photographer magnet for those passing by Burra in South Australia. My take is very different from what Ken Duncan took for the album cover back in the day consequentially making this little ruin very famous..

The new Stadler/Flirt 755 units coming through Brantham hauled by DB 66002 from Ripple Lane to Norwich Crown Point.A good view of the Diesel power car fitted with a V8 engine in the middle of the four car sets. I wonder if GA are getting any three car Bi-Modes, because i do not think four cars would fit into Manningtree bay platform.

I like how this light yellow Mercedes-Benz (W123) from decades ago distinguishes itself from the colorless group of modern cars in the background.

To me it seems a bit odd to consider this as an old car even though it is. It might be because these were so commonly recognizable from the time I was a young adult. Its production lasted 11 model years which seems almost like forever, and their durability assured their presence on the roads for many years thereafter.

Notice that there are two Mercedes Benz autos in this photo. In addition to the subject yellow one there’s a white one sitting in traffic, visible between the old Benz and the traffic light pylon. Covering up the front end of the old one, it still looks very much like a Mercedes Benz. Do the same to the white one and suddenly that car becomes a bit more generic and anonymous, not as immediately recognizable as a Mercedes Benz. That’s a priceless quality possessed by the older model and not so much by the newer one.

It is now owned by the Harry Needle Railroad Company and remains in the colourful livery applied by Bombardier when in its ownership at Derby. This locomotive was formerly named 'Lionheart' but the name has now been removed.

Is it my imagination or has NRM toned down the lighting? It seemed to me that the former over-bright lighting, which was a devil to take photos in, had been reduced on this last visit.

Whilst I photographed steam from this viewpoint I never tried an afternoon shot of diesel power. As far as I recall I never managed any photos of 46's either. So whilst I would love to say I took it, I didn't!

BR 'Park Royal' railbus M79971 in the old Leith Central station, in 1968, with a 79xxx 'Inter City' DMU behind.

The station had closed to passengers back in 1952, but was then converted for use as a DMU/diesel depot - the first in Scotland.

M79971 had been transferred to Scotland in 1960, but had kept its 'M' prefix.. It was withdrawn in February 1968, and the body was used as a staff rest room for some years at Millerhill yard. As it was contaminated with asbestos, it was (literally..) buried there in July 1984. No examples survived into preservation.

Leith Central depot finally closed down completely in 1972, and was derelict for some years, but the trainshed seen here was demolished in the 1980s, and only the clock tower and station offices remained. Today (2022) most of this trainshed site is occupied by retail stores, and a car park.
