With loco hauled services starting up again between Skipton and Alppleby utilising class 47 and 37 locos, this should add a boost to Tourism in the region. WCR DUFF 47245 was only working the Dalesman from Leeds to Helliefield and steam took over. I am amazed they have not thought of this years ago.

My goal with this series is to explore every day scenes under the cover of darkness. A street corner, a lamp post, a doorway. Big city, small town, urban, rural. Man-made light versus nature’s darkness–––light and shadow interpreting minimalist settings in black and white. To see more in this series, check out Cover Of Darkness
Early on in the COVER OF NIGHT series, I shot a couple gas stations. They were not initially the type scene I was looking to capture, but when I came across one late at night, bright and isolated in the darkness, it was impossible for me to resist, so I continue to shoot them. I have now shot enough that they have become a series-within-the-series. For a look at them as a collection, check out, Gas Stations

This has been the typical power combination for the Tesco train of late. Apparently this is due to reliability issues with the electro-diesel class 88's which normally power the train single handedly on electric. This combination of a diesel and an electric working in multiple is very unusual in the UK, and this is the only instance I'm aware of where this has been regular booked traction for a train.

One of the unique features of the Don River Railway living museum is that it features diesel locomotives. Most of these diesel trains were bought by TasRail from Queensland Rail because they both operate on the 3'6" gauge.
We are going to take a train ride next on the wonderful old Mount Lyell No.3 steam engine which normally operates on the West Coast Railway from Queenstown to Strahan. It was a special guest of the Don River Railway 50th anniversary celebrations.
But since tomorrow is Sunday in Tasmania, I have something a little different to share with you. It absolutely blew me away when I photographed it on Friday afternoon.
Today the first bunny left the nest:(
I knew this was coming but still..... it brings tears in my eyes. Her new home is a very loving one and that makes it all a little bit easier.
Sweet Bruintje (Diesel) wishing you a good life with your new human Marianne.
Don't ask me why but when I saw this I immediately thought of the vending machine thingy in Wallace and Gromit's A Grand Day Out
An old abandoned farm house that was featured on an album cover of an old Australian band Midnight Oil from Diesel & dust (1987) Beds are burning.
A bit cliche but still relevant today. Does anyone remember them?
This was seriously overexposed but slid back to normal HSS

For the 2025 holiday season, Metro-North Railroad is operating two Holiday Lights trains, building off the success of their first such train last year. As was the case previously, an M8 trainset has been decorated with multi-colored lights and holiday decals to make rounds through all of the electrified sections of the railroad. In addition, this year a diesel trainset was also decorated - with "M Central" heritage unit 203 for power - which will bring the holiday cheer to all extents of the railroad beyond electrification!
Here we see the diesel train making its stop at Irvington Station, operating as Hudson Line train 8741 to Croton-Harmon.
Diesel Engine in Priort, August 15th, 2016. White livery, no serial number, no markings... maybe it's a secret CIA train? :-)

What better way to do "F-Unit Friday" than with a "real" diesel-electric locomotive.
The EMD FL9 is a model capable of operating either as a traditional diesel-electric locomotive or as an electric locomotive powered from a third rail. Sixty units were built between October 1956 and November 1960 by EMD for the New Haven Railroad.
The NYC Park Avenue tunnels out of Grand Central were an issue with smoke during the steam days, which was one reason the electrification of the rail line through it. The New Haven had overhead catenary, as seen in yesterday's post, so in order to run into GCT the FL9 was built to the task of running as a diesel under the wires and then as an electric when on New York Central tracks to GCT, that had third rail. They have a long fabled history in the area north of NYC.
Amtrak grabbed a few of them for their "Empire Service" from Albany, NY. They also had Rorh Turboliners capable of running on third rail in New York. But the "Fly-9" was the main draw into New York. One particular train that did something dating back to the "Central" days, was the "Lake Shore Limited". Train 48 & 49 ran with diesel power between Croton-Harmon and Albany and required a diesel to electric power change at Croton daily. Metro North personal were contracted to pull off the F40PH and add a single Amtrak FL9 for the rest of the trip. The F40 remained at Croton and was added to train 49 that evening with the Amtrak unit laying over for the following days 48. This power change usually took less than 15 minutes.
This went on until the mid 80's at least, until someone brainstormed that a second FL9 could power the train from Albany eliminating the for the change at Croton. And that is what we see here in my shot at Scarborough, NY of train 48 with a nice lengthy train under diesel power, for now.
it seems that despite a severe shortage of suitable steam locos, the llangollen railway's collection of dmus is not affected by the recent problems , so it is quite likely then when services eventually recommence that we shall see more of them--not ideal , but much better than no railway at all---in this archive view the wickhams set passes garth y dwr
