IdemoLab, DELTA joined forces with KEA's Jewellery Design program and Wearable Technologies in collaboration to create 'Meaningful Jewellery' for their wearable technology project, and to host the Wearable Tech Global Picnic.
At the event "Jewellery of Tomorrow", KEA students from all semesters exhibited their projects (Meaningful Jewellery, Mixed Media, and Portfolio). The Meaningful Jewellery Devices class was part of a collaboration between Vanessa Julia Carpenter of IdemoLab, DELTA and Petra Ahde-Deal of KEA. Vanessa is exploring the Design of Meaningful Smart Devices and introduced to the class how to work with hardware and think about creating non-screen, tangible, embedded interactive devices which create value and are meaningful in people's lives.
In the coming decade, wearable technology will touch nearly every aspect of our lives. The jewellery students from KEA shared their 8-week journey in creating meaningful jewellery devices and their functional prototypes. Understanding the functionalities of different sensors and using the knowledge of design thinking and user experience, the functional jewellery prototypes are the nexus of design, innovation, imagination and function.

A quirky steampunk chameleon sits proudly on a velvet cushion, covered in brass gears, cogs, riveted plates, and tiny steam-powered devices. Its eyes are magnified behind green-tinted mechanical lenses with rotating dials. A miniature top hat sits crooked on its head, fastened by pipes and bolts. The creature’s scales blend from turquoise to copper, reflecting polished metal. Hyper-realistic textures, whimsical Victorian flair, cinematic lighting, shallow depth of field, ultra-detailed 8K, mechanical fantasy meets natural biology.
Seminal steampunk novel by K. W. Jeter, the man who coined the term "steampunk."

I like what they've done with the design, harkening back to word processors and coupler modems. Feels almost like something you'd see in a Wes Anderson movie.
It appears to be some sort of communication device, with a tethered mouthpiece and receptacle for inserting monetary funds. My understanding is that the user would activate the device with money, then press the square keys under the mouthpiece to identify the appropriate connection terminating point. Once the connection was achieved, usually with an audible greeting of some sort, the user would then speak into the portion of the mouthpiece closest to the tethered communication cable. Placing mouthpiece in hook above the square buttons would end the connection. I remember seeing these lining the walls outside the office at my high school, near the ashtrays.

For anyone interested: The attached device is a copy of Asian device online. It is 2 door hinges each with 4 "L" shape brackets. The ribbons sandwiched between brackets. The ribbons are firmly superglue to the left and right side of the sole with the door hinge in "V" folded shape. As the V shape flattens the ribbons pull quite hard on the feet making them wide. (the hinges lock when it is flat so the device pull is constant) I used it for 2days to stretch foot width 5.25". When released they were 4.9" and have stay that width while being bare foot. It is possible to walk slowly "flat footed" wearing this device which helps pull the stretching width of the feet. Excellent balance when hiking with wide feet. Helps from slipping on rocks also.

A day on the water with Florida Sea Grant and King Fisher Fleet, learning about barotrauma on fish and descending equipment.
Barotrauma is caused when the swimbladder of a fish ruptures when brought up to the surface causing gases to escape into the fish's body cavity. This can push their stomach out their mouth and bulge their eyes. It also can prevent them from returning down to depth because the air inside the cavity causes them to float.
Anglers who fish for deep water fish are encouraged to carry descending gear in order to safely return fish. This helps sustain a healthy fish population.
Through a grant through West Marine, Florida Sea Grant demonstrated several descending gear devices to return the fish back to their depth. Punta Gorda, Fla. Oct. 17, 2014
