BILLY CONNOLLY: MADE IN SCOTLAND FROM SCULPTED STEEL BARS, AND HUNG FROM A WEE BUILDING IN ANDERSTON.

Anderston – the next stages, video: bit.ly/vxHop5
Made in Scotland from girders … not quite, but a sculpture of Big Yin Billy Connolly has been created in metalwork to signal the completion of the first phase of a landmark McBains Cooper project-managed residential housing project in his home town of Anderston, Glasgow.
The sculpture, made from steel bars by renowned north-of-the-border artist Andy Scott, is hung high on an elevation of the first phase to be completed.
And while Glasgow’s most famous son couldn’t make it to the unveiling of a ground level commemorative plaque marking the occasion, a big crowd of locals and media did.
Property and construction consultancy McBains Cooper are project managers on the five phase residential rebuild of Anderston, working with client Sanctuary Housing, and the sculpture of Billy Connolly is high up on the elevation overlooking Glasgow.
Such was the attention to detail during the project as a whole that the team even designed one apartment specifically for the needs of one family, and the gratitude and delight of the residents at that sort of effort - plus the overall finished product – has been clearly signalled by how well kept the whole area is.
“We occasionally get celebrities turning up at launches and openings, but it’ll be nice to drive past the sculpture of the Big Yin every day and be reminded that we played a part in putting Anderston back on the map – after Billy Connolly did it first time round,” said Alan Hannah of McBains Cooper.
The project involves the demolition of a number of 1960s housing blocks in the Glasgow suburb, but has proven to be a massive logistical challenge for the McBains Cooper and Sanctuary teams.
“The key issues here are that the work is going on in amongst a number of schools and nurseries, while also being surrounded by occupied homes – so not only have the logistics of getting into the sites been taxing the grey matter, there has also been the issue of moving families out and into nearby accommodation, and then into the completed Phase One apartment complex,” said Alan Hannah.
“But we know we’ve got it right, firstly because the local residents were surveyed and asked what they wanted and needed in the area – a target we delivered against – but secondly because you don’t have to go far through the area to see how well-kept and looked-after the communal areas are.
“This is one of those incredibly complex but equally incredibly satisfying projects that’s clearly making a vast difference to life in Anderston. And with the Big Yin looking down on us, we wouldn’t dare get it wrong.”

The Government announced its backing of Phase 1 of the development of a revised East-West Rail Link in August 2000.
Phase 1 – Bicester to Oxford (Completed December 2016)
Chiltern Railways’ Evergreen 3 project involved the introduction of new direct services between London (Marylebone) and Oxford via Bicester. The scope was enlarged to include the infrastructure required for East West Rail (Phase 1) between Oxford and Bicester. This involved the doubling of the railway track between Oxford and Bicester, and the construction of a new chord (a short section of track) to connect Bicester to the Chiltern mainline. East West Rail Phase 1 also involved the upgrading of track and signalling, and the construction of two new stations at Oxford Parkway and Bicester Village.
Services between Oxford Parkway and Bicester Village began on October 26, 2015. And on December 12, 2016, services between Oxford and London Marylebone via Bicester commenced.
Phase 2 – Bedford to Bicester, Milton Keynes to Princes Risborough is due to open in early 2020s
Phase 2 of the Western Section involves the upgrade and reconstruction of existing and mothballed section of the lines linking Bedford and Bicester, and Milton Keynes and Aylesbury. The Public Enquiry relating to Phase 2 will begin in 2019,
Work taking place is as follows:
Bicester to Claydon Junction: Track will be doubled and foot and highway crossings diverted, replaced with structures or closed.
Claydon Junction to Bletchley: This is the mothballed section of track and will be double tracked. At Bletchley Station there will be two high level platforms and a connecting footbridge and a new station will be built at Winslow.
Bletchley to Bedford: The current train service will continue to run and the track will remain as existing. There will be some alterations to some foot and highway crossings; diverted, replaced with structures or closed. Rigmont and Woburn Sands stations will receive platform extensions.
Claydon Junction to Aylesbury: Track will be doubled and foot and highway crossings diverted, replaced with structures or closed. There will be two platforms and a connecting footbridge at Aylesbury Vale Parkway Station.
Aylesbury to Princes Risborough: The Princes Risborough to Aylesbury line (PRA) is proposed to remain single track. There will be a platform extension at Princes Risborough Station.
The Players:
East West Rail Consortium: The Consortium contains councils along the East West Rail route. It was formed in 1995, and since then has made the strategic and business case for East West Rail. The Consortium is also a ‘minority shareholder’ in the scheme, having contributed £45m towards the Western Section. It works closely with Network Rail, the Department for Transport and other partners to ensure the line is built as soon as possible.
The East West Rail Alliance: The Alliance is made up of Network Rail, Atkins, Laing O’Rourke and Volker Rail. It is responsible for designing and building the Western Section.
The East West Railway Company: This was formed as a special purpose vehicle by the Secretary of State for Transport to optimise the delivery of the East West Rail. It initially reviewed the East West Rail proposals and led a value engineering and programme delivery review to identify how the value and benefits from this project can be realised as quickly as is possible. The company’s terms of reference are:
•work with the Department for Transport on its aim to open the entire line (including the Central Section from Bedford to Cambridge) by the mid 2020s
•explore innovative funding and financing options
•drive significant cost and time benefits in the construction, maintenance and operation of East West Rail
•generate greater contestability in rail construction and maintenance
•integrate infrastructure and train services to provide a better experience for passengers
•work with local communities to make sure the new railway meets the needs of those who live and work in the area

This is a photograph from the 3rd annual running of The Lough Lene Gaels Hurling and Camogie Clubs New Year Road Challenge which was held in Collinstown, Co. Westmeath, Ireland on Sunday 11th January 2015 at 13:00. There were two races on offer today - a 10KM road race and a 5KM road race, fun run, and walk. This is one of the first road races in the midlands of the New Year 2015. As this was a community orientated event families were especially welcome in the 5KM race. The race was organised to raise funding for the development of the GAA pitches for the Lough Lene Gaels Hurling and Camogie Clubs. Overall this was a very successful event with a very large field of well over 300 participants in both races combined. The great local effort was exemplified by a very big local contingent from Collinstown and neighbouring areas.
The 5KM race was an out and back course on the Collinstown to Fore Road. The 10KM was also on an out and back course with a deviation between 2KM and 7KM for the longer race. There were several tough hills but an equal amount of down-hill. There was a bitter cold wind on the backs of participants of the 10KM for the first half of the race which unfortunately turned to become a headwind for the return stretch to the finish. The turn around on the course for the 10KM came at Doyle's Pub [goo.gl/maps/WxPSy - Google Streetview] at Glenidan. Refreshments were served afterwards in the Lough Lene Inn where the prize ceremony was also held.
Due to the inclement weather and poor lighting we had to, unfortunately, delete a lot of our photographs as there were very many blurs and fuzzy pictures. However, we have an extensive set of photographs from today's events on the following Flickr Photoset Page: www.flickr.com/photos/peterm7/sets/72157649832542838/

We use Creative Commons Licensing for these photographs
We use the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License for all our photographs here in this photograph set. What does this mean in reality?
The explaination is very simple.
Attribution- anyone using our photographs gives us an appropriate credit for it. This ensures that people aren't taking our photographs and passing them off as their own. This usually just mean putting a link to our photographs somewhere on your website, blog, or Facebook where other people can see it.
ShareAlike – anyone can use these photographs, and make changes if they like, or incorporate them into a bigger project, but they must make those changes available back to the community under the same terms.
Creative Commons aims to encourage creative sharing. See some examples of Creative Commons photographs on Flickr: www.flickr.com/creativecommons/
I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?
As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!
You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.
Don't like your photograph here?
That's OK! We understand!
If, for any reason, you are not happy or comfortable with your picture appearing here in this photoset on Flickr then please email us at petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com and we will remove it as soon as possible. We give careful consideration to each photograph before uploading.
I want to tell people about these great photographs!
Great! Thank you! The best link to spread the word around is probably http://www.flickr.com/peterm7/sets
