Michigan Army National Guardsman Staff Sgt. Christopher Nowicki gets two seconds with Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland before game 5 of the American League Championship Series at Comerica Park in Detroit, on October 17, 2013. Nowicki is an operations and training sergeant assigned to the 1st Battalion, 119th Field Artillery Regiment, based in Lansing, Mich., and was selected to deliver the game ball to the pitcher’s mound as the Tigers took on the Boston Red Sox. Nowicki deployed with the 119th to Kuwait in 2010 as a Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear defense specialist and was recognized by the Tigers for his service to the U.S. Armed Forces. Along with delivering the game ball, Nowicki, his wife Deanne (who is the president of the 119th’s Family Support Group), and Deanne’s parents, Tom and Sue, had tickets to watch the game. My Grandpa & I attended our very first major league ball game in 1972, 44 years ago this past Saturday in Detroit, it was the Tigers vs the Kansas City Royals.
For whatever reason we were running late getting to Briggs Stadium "At the corner of Michigan & Trumbull" as Ernie Harwell would say.
We were on foot & getting very hungry when we came across a Coney Island restaurant. All they had left was ground hamburger on a hot dog bun with mustard, SOLD!!!
In memory of him & that special day, I eat this simple "special meal" prepared by my wife Sue each year as I reminisce about that mid summer's day from so very long ago now.
Oh...getting back to the story...we arrived just in time for the first pitch!
I will never forget walking up the tunnel to our box seats on the first base line between first & the bullpen, the grass was so green!
Fans surrounding us had portable radios & televisions listening to & watching the spectacle which was now about to play out before us.
Our Detroit Tigers won the game 2-0 on 2 rocketing home runs off the bats of two of our heroes, Norm Cash in the 2nd inning, the other by Aurelio Rodriguez in the 6th.
Of course my Grandpa passed many years ago now. I'm sure he would be more than amused that I observe this! lol
One of my most favourite memories of him.
Funny enough they are playing the same team, the Kansas City Royals this weekend...God I miss that man & those golden days with a heavy heart always this time of year!!!

We would go onto beat these same Royals in 1984 to win the American League Pennant 1-0 on our way to a World Series Championship, the likes of which we had never seen.
My Grandpa was too sick at the time to fully appreciate it but I knew in his heart he was cheering for our Tigers as hard as I was cheering for him to get well again which sadly never occurred.

I AM FOREVER A TIGER FAN!
