Michigan Army National Guardsman Staff Sgt. Christopher Nowicki gets two seconds with Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland before game 5 of the American League Championship Series at Comerica Park in Detroit, on October 17, 2013. Nowicki is an operations and training sergeant assigned to the 1st Battalion, 119th Field Artillery Regiment, based in Lansing, Mich., and was selected to deliver the game ball to the pitcher’s mound as the Tigers took on the Boston Red Sox. Nowicki deployed with the 119th to Kuwait in 2010 as a Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear defense specialist and was recognized by the Tigers for his service to the U.S. Armed Forces. Along with delivering the game ball, Nowicki, his wife Deanne (who is the president of the 119th’s Family Support Group), and Deanne’s parents, Tom and Sue, had tickets to watch the game.
