A few more of our 1988 Mini 'Designer' Mary Quant.

Everything is totally original and the only thing slightly spoiling things is the deterioration to the Mary Quant signature logo on the seats.

Finally I made my own designer Ariel. I repainted Ariel's face (2013), restyled her hair and sewed blouse. Dress was bought online.

1964 Ford Galaxie

"The 1964 Galaxie was described by Ford as "a car bred in open competition and built for total performance".

For 1964, there were 16 models to choose from to include different varieties of sedans, hardtops, convertibles, and wagons. This Galaxie carried much the same lines as the 1963 with new distinctive styling through new trim moldings, grill and rear panel design, and all new interior trim styling.

Ford offered the Galaxie 500 in the sedan, hardtop and convertible body styles.

The Galaxie 500XL was offered in the sedan, hardtop, and convertible as well. The 500XL was the deluxe model with standard plush vinyl bucket seats with console, special XL trim moldings and ornamentation and standard equipment V-8 engine., and full wheel covers.

1964 was another year of awesome performance with six different engine choices. The most notable was the Thunderbird 390 V-8 engine at 300 horsepower, and two versions of the all powerful 427 power plant. Both a four barrel and dual carburetor version were offered at 410, and 425 horsepower respectively. For transmissions, Ford offered much the same as 1963. The four speed was standard euipment on 427 engine sizes and optional equipment on 390. Ford discontinued the 406 engine for 1964 which was now replaced by the 427. Ford also built a number of 427 Fiberglass race equipped Galaxies for 1964.

Many consider the 1964 the most attractive Galaxie ever built. The 1964 Fords are also legendary for their racing history as many of the factory lightweight cars were used by the Ford Motor Company extensively on the race track. This racing experience gave these cars instant popularity that continues to the current day."

Ford Galaxie

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"The Ford Galaxie was a full-size car built in the United States by the Ford Motor Company for model years 1959 through 1974. The name was used for the top models in Ford's full-size range from 1959 until 1961, in a marketing attempt to appeal to the excitement surrounding the Space Race. In 1962, all full-size Fords wore the Galaxie badge, with "500" and "500/XL" denoting the higher series. The Galaxie 500/LTD was introduced for 1965 followed by the Galaxie 500 7-Litre in 1966. The Galaxie 500 part was dropped from the LTD in 1966, and from the XL in 1967; however the basic series structuring levels were maintained. The "regular" Galaxie 500 continued below the LTD as Ford's mid-level full-size model from 1965 until its demise at the end of the 1974 model year.

The Galaxie was the high volume counterpart to the Chevrolet Impala. Some Galaxies were high-performance, racing specification machines, a larger forebear to the muscle car era. Others were plain family sedans."

(...)

Second generation 1960–1964.

"The 1960 Galaxie was all-new in style, abandoning the ostentatious ornamentation of the 1950s for a futuristic, sleek look. A new body style this year was the Starliner, featuring a huge, curving rear observation window on a pillarless, hardtop bodyshell. The formal roofed 2-door hardtop was not available this year, but the roofline was used for the Galaxie 2-door pillared sedan, complete with chromed window frames."

(...)

1961

"For 1961, the bodywork was redone again, although the underpinnings were the same as in 1960.

(...) the 1961 Galaxie offered a new 390 CID (6.4 L) version of Ford's FE series pushrod V8, which was available with either a four-barrel carburetor or, for serious performance, three two-barrel carburetors."

(...)

1962

"For 1962, the Galaxie name was applied to all of Ford's full size models, as the Fairlane moved to a new intermediate and Custom was temporarily retired. New top-line Galaxie 500 (two-door sedan and hardtop, four-door sedan and hardtop, and "Sunliner" convertible) models offered plusher interiors, more chrome trim outside, and a few additional luxury items over and above what was standard on the plainer Galaxie models. Base Galaxie models were available in two- and four-door sedans as well as the plain Ranch Wagon.

(...) The 292 cu in (4.8 l) V8 was standard on the 500/XL. The XL had as sportier trim inside and out as part of the package. "

(...)

1963

"For 1963, Ford saw no reason to radically change a good thing, and the 1963 model was essentially unchanged save for some freshening and added trim; windshields were reshaped and a four-door hardtop 500/XL was added."

(...)

1964

"Model year 1964 was the fourth and final year of this body style. Interior trim was much altered, and the exterior featured a more sculpted look which was actually designed to make the car more aerodynamic for NASCAR. The formal-roof "boxtop" style was replaced by a slanted-roof design for all non-wagon or convertible models, including sedans. Ford's quality control, spotty when the first Galaxie was introduced, was now as good as it ever was, and many 1964 Fords passed the 100,000-mile (160,000 km) mark intact. The 1964 models gained an enviable reputation as durable, comfortable cars that offered decent handling and road-ability at a reasonable price, so it is no wonder they sold so well."

BT ArtBox project celebrating 25 years of Childline

ArtBox Title: The Royal Stewart

Artist: Corrie Nielsen

Location: Wyndham Place

Open-air art exhibition across London - Summer 2012

• BT marked 25th anniversary of ChildLine with launch of open-air art exhibition in London

• BT ArtBox project saw leading artists, designers and creatives transform full-size replicas of iconic Gilbert Scott–designed red telephone box into stunning artworks

• Throughout June and July 2012, BT ArtBoxes were on display in high-profile locations across the capital

• The National Portrait Gallery hosted a gala auction on July 18 where the ArtBoxes were auctioned to raise money for ChildLine

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of ChildLine, BT announced the launch of the BT ArtBox project – a new public art exhibition set to take over the capital Summer 2012.

Leading artists, designers and creatives from around the world were invited to apply their individual talents to re-style that much-loved icon of British design, the traditional red telephone box.

Each artist or designer took delivery of a full-size, fibre-glass replica of the Sir Giles Gilbert Scott-designed original K6 telephone kiosk, which was introduced in 1936 to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of the coronation of King George V.

Participating artists included 2002 Turner prize winner Keith Tyson, Romero Britto and Royal Academician Professor of Sculpture David Mach, along with fashion designers Giles Deacon and Zandra Rhodes.

The BT ArtBoxes were on display in high-profile locations around the capital between June 18 and July 16 before being auctioned off at a VIP Gala Auction at the National Portrait Gallery on July 18 to raise funds for BT’s long-time partner ChildLine.

Esther Rantzen OBE, founder of ChildLine and patron of the BT ArtBox project, said: “I’m thrilled that ChildLine’s 25th birthday is to be celebrated by such a unique and inspiring project as BT Artbox.

“The red phone box is a much loved symbol of British culture and I’m keen to see how the artists involved will create new masterpieces from such an iconic canvas. It’s fantastic that the proceeds from the sale of the boxes will raise vital funds to support the work of ChildLine, enabling us to help many more children and young people to get comfort, advice and protection when they need it most.”

Sandy Nairne, director of the National Portrait Gallery and patron of the BT ArtBox project, said: “The Gilbert Scott telephone box is a truly iconic British design, and I’m looking forwards to seeing how artists and designers transform the replica boxes into works of art on London’s streets.”

David Mach, said: “It’s great to be involved with the ArtBox Exhibition. I get to kill more than two birds with one stone...work with a great charity (hopefully make money for it) and a classic British design. I love all things Gilbert Scott. Anything that encourages us to get his design back on our streets does it for me”.

Suzi Williams, director of BT Group Marketing and Brand, said: “BT has a history of supporting British cultural initiatives and 2012 is no exception. What better way to celebrate ChildLine's 25th anniversary than transforming replicas of the classic red phone box into a public art exhibition that can be enjoyed by all in the build-up to the Games this summer."

Martine Ainsworth-Wells, London & Partners, Marketing and Communications director, said:

“London & Partners is excited to support BT ArtBox in the run up to London 2012. BT ArtBox will bring some of the UK’s finest artistic talents to London’s streets, adding a new creative dimension to the capital at such an important time in its history.”

Artists and creatives who were interested in designing an ArtBox visited btartbox.com for more information about how to get involved.

The BT ArtBox project was supported by the Mayor of London, Professor Malcolm Garrett RDI, London & Partners, The May Fair Hotel, Harvey Nichols, The Times and The Sunday Times and borough councils across the capital.

Images of Malcolm Garrett, Interaction Designer, Sandy Nairne, Director of the National Portrait Gallery, David Mach RA, Sculptor, Esther Rantzen, founder of ChildLine and Lauren O'Farrell, Artist at the launch of the BT ArtBox project at the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel, central London today are available at:

Top 10 facts about the K6 red phone box

1. Kiosk number 6 or “Jubilee Kiosk” commemorates the Silver Jubilee of the coronation of King George V.

2. Sir Giles Gilbert Scott also designed Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral, Battersea Power Station and Bankside Power Station now Tate Modern.

3. More than 1,600 decommissioned red phone boxes, mostly K6s, have been sold to local communities for just a £1 under BT’s Adopt a Kiosk scheme. Uses include being fitted with lifesaving defibrillation machines, turned into art galleries and public libraries.

4. The K6 was the first kiosk installed nationwide and the standard kiosk across the UK until the introduction of the K8 in 1968.

5. The K6 kiosk is made from cast iron with a teak door. It is 8’3” tall (2.4 metres) and weighs three quarters of a ton (762 kilograms).

6. The K6 design was approved by the Post Office and the Royal Fine Arts Commission, which endorsed “Post Office red” as the standard colour.

7. Although Scott agreed to the use of “Post Office red” he was never a supporter of the colour and initially suggested the outside of the kiosk be painted silver and the inside greenish-blue. He strongly urged rural kiosks be painted dove-grey.

8. Two K6 kiosks were installed in France during 1995, for the 50th anniversary of the D-Day landings.

9. Several red K6’s have been transformed into combined payphones and cash machines.

10.There are 11,000 red phone boxes in use in the UK.

February 14, 2009 - Valentine's Day in Toronto - I had to go downtown to get my Spotmatic repaired, so I spent the afternoon walking around. I thought I didn't get too many shots that I liked, but after looking at them and processing them, they turned out ok. I uploaded a lot today.

LOL, there was Dolce & Gabbana incense!

As summer approaches I see colourful billboards everywhere! Skinny models in glam make-up are wrapped in designer fabric – all to impress female consumers. The models wear long qameezes and short ones, baggy shirts and tight ones – what they do not wear are shalwars.

The traditional shalwar has all but disappeared from the modern silhouette. It has been replaced by the more Western inspired pants, capris, trousers and churidaars. The shalwar suit that was once a cultural icon is now, nowhere to be seen!

The dupatta has met a similar fate. Not so long ago, the dupatta was a cultural symbol worn by Pakistani women and was considered an accessory that was necessary to complete your outfit. Today, it is worn only by a particular segment of society who wear it for “modesty” not for fashion.

Fashion designers scoff at the traditional shalwar and embrace hybrid East meets West outfits which they label ‘shalwar kameez’. But really? Who are they kidding? The latest designs have little to do with the traditional outfit.

Pakistani women rely on fashion designers to make shalwar kameez fun and new – for some reason this mean Western and foreign. Cut off the sleeves! Do away with the dupatta! Who need a shalwar?

Designers have not given the national dress the prestige it deserves.

I won’t lie – my own wardrobe has been updated with new outfits and the shalwar is missing along with traditional kameezes and dupattas. Instead, I have capris and trousers which go well with the baggy shirts which are now referred to as kameezes.

This cultural corruption should not be acceptable. Saris remain popular in India, even though people wear skirts, jeans and trousers there too. Arabian maxis are worn by Arab women in addition to the long abaayas; Malay women prefer to be comfortable wearing silk wrappers along with scarves covering their hair. Multicultural and secular nations give their women the privilege to wear whatever they want – what they don’t permit is cultural exploitation.

New things should not come at the cost of old ones. Let’s save the shalwar, our culture and the livelihood of the poor street guys who once used to sell azaarbands and elastics on streets!

The following info is taken from the museums website:-

"By the end of XIX century a German designer, Dr Waldemar Geest, one of the most talented aviation pioneers, experimented with the tailless aircraft configuration based on observation of birds' flight. In the years 1896–1900 he built a series of gliders, ended with patenting the wing, which thanks to its negative angle of incidence, featured natural stability.

In 1910, basing on the experience gained, Waldemar Geest built the glider resembling the silhouette of kittyhawk bird of prey. A year later, he built his first aircraft, the Möwe I, powered with the Argus engine and a wing with strongly shaped camber of profile and patented by Geest, wing tips. In 1911, the Moeve II powered with 70 HP Gnome engine appeared.

A year later, at the Berlin Johannisthal LVG works, the Möwe III powered with the 70 HP Argus engine was built. In 1913, two almost identical machines, the Möwe IV and Möwe V (with additional ailerons), powered with the 100HP Argus engines were built.

In May 1913, the Swiss pilot Alberto Colombo flying the Möwe IV during the “Aeronautical Week“ became famous as the only one, daring to fly in the stormy weather condition and achieving the 300 metres altitude.

The common feature of all the Waldemar Geest aircraft was an excellent in flight stability. In the same year, as one of the German pioneer aircraft designer, he was awarded with the donation of 35 000 mark as a price for the role he played in the development of aviation. This allowed him to finance the building of the Möwe VI, designed in co operation with the Aviation Experimental Institute in Adlershof.

The Geest Möwe IV preserved at the Polish Aviation Museum is the world’s only surving Waldemar Geest's aircraft."

It is c/n 4 and is now on display in a building full of unrestored relics at the Muzeum Lotnictwa Polskiego.

Krakow, Poland.
