Quite like the mix of old-timey and new styling. The finish on the circular hour display looks a bit special.

Case Study - Superheats Broadband - Digital Scotland

Tom Madden - web designer

Is now very happy have superheats broadband at his West Lothian home.

Tom Madden

Tom is Head of Development at D8, a design agency in Glasgow. He lives with his partner Ann and Ann’s 18 year old son, Lewis, in the village of Bridgehouse in West Lothian. He often works from his home office in a wooden cabin at the bottom of the garden, overlooking the pond. Now they have a fibre broadband connection, Tom is able to work from home just as effectively as from the office, boosting his productivity and improving his quality of life.

Staying ahead

Tom says: “I can now rely on broadband speeds of 36 Mbps download, which is more than ten times faster than the speeds we received before. That makes a tremendous difference to the way I can work from home. For example, I recently had to download a huge file from a client that would previously have taken 24 hours! With the fibre broadband connection, it took no longer than two hours, which meant that I could get on with the project and deliver the client what he wanted faster. Design is a competitive industry and speed helps us stay ahead.

“Having fibre broadband will make an even more dramatic difference in winter. On days when it is snowing or there are transport problems, I can continue working from home, without any loss of productivity, rather than try to battle in to the office.”

Productive video calls

“Fibre broadband is also making it so much easier to use Skype. We frequently use video calls to speak to clients, but if I joined a call from home before, it would often break up. Now it is perfect quality. I often want to show a client a website when on a video call but I used to hesitate to do this as it would make the quality even worse. Now, I can show websites and share slides on a video call, and it makes no difference at all to the crystal clear video and audio. This makes it so much easier to have productive meetings with clients over Skype.”

Connecting instantly

Tom adds: “I can also rely on instant connection to the office servers via our Virtual Private Network (VPN). This means I can access all the office files whenever I need them. In the past, if I was going to work from home, I had to plan it in advance and take the files home with me. Now, I do not have to worry about that and can always access whatever I need from the office as well as respond speedily to any unexpected client demands.

“One time I really notice the improvement in speeds when I am making amendments to a website. Now, these copy to the server instantly whereas before there would be a delay of a few minutes each time. Whenever that happened, I would lose concentration and it had a significant impact on productivity overall. Now I can just crack through the work.

Music throughout the house

Tom continues: “As well as changing the way I can work from home, fibre broadband is making a difference to the way we live. Ann and I love music and now we will be able to install a Sonos system and enjoy multi-room music, controlled from our mobile phone or tablet. We can pick music from Spotify and create exactly the mood we want throughout the house and office. For example, I find certain types of music help me concentrate and work faster. Now all this will be at our fingertips.

Connecting all the family

“We are also making full use of catch up TV on iPlayer now, which we could hardly use at all before, because it kept buffering. And, especially with a teenager in the household, it is wonderful to be able to rely on the same fast broadband regardless of how many of us are online at the same time. Lewis is a big user of social media and YouTube. He is interested in Anime, a Japanese film animation style, and he talks to friends and other Anime enthusiasts around the world. So he is really delighted we have the fibre connection as we used to ask him to get off the internet, if we needed the bandwidth for something else. You can imagine his frustration and how pleased we all are that this is in the past.

“It’s also fantastic to be able to use Skype to talk to Ann’s daughter, who is travelling in India. It makes all the difference to be able to have long face to face conversations and even see the hotels she is staying in – and all at no cost!

Tom concludes: “Fibre broadband is making a huge difference to my ability to work from home as well as improving the quality of life for everyone in my family.”

interior by Kim Taylor

Designer: Berthon

Builder: Berthon Boat Co.

Year: 1936

Location Scotland

Length on deck: 47'

Beam: 12'

Draft: 7'

Tonnage(TM): 24TM

£79,000

One of the largest Gauntlets built by the Berthon Boat Co. she is typical of the design with an elegant sheer and canoe stern. Commissioned by the chairman of Coutts bank, she was built in 1936 to Lloyds 100A1 and maintained in class until 1984.

She was in the same family ownership for the first 40 years of her life after which she was sold to a Swiss family who took her to the Caribbean for charter work. On the way home she was dismasted and consequently sold by Wooden Ships to the present owner in 1991. Then started a 16 year refit in Scotland where the boat was checked from top to bottom, a new rig fitted, interior refurbished and all new systems and electrics fitted.

The rig was re-designed during the refit and her old Bermudan cutter rig was replaced with a cutter headed yawl rig. This enabled the overall sail area to be increased while decreasing the size of the mizzen and making her generally a lot easier to handle. There are no longer running backstays because of the use of jumper struts, the jib is on a roller reefing system and the staysail is boomed making her very simple and easy to sail. The owner has reported she will sail upwind with just a mizzen and staysail, and in over a Force 5 she will tack upwind comfortably with a staysail and reefed main.

A very impressive and eye catching yacht, full of character and pedigree with much of her original interior and fittings. Now in lovely condition after a thorough 16 year refit she is an unusual and very special yacht.

24 ton Berthon Gauntlet

Very sensibly priced considering the quality of this superb yacht. This is not because of problems with the condition of the boat but simply because the elderly owner wishes to move her on.

Length on Deck 47′

Length Overall 52’6″

Beam 12′

Draft 7′

Thames Tonnage 24TM

Sail Area 1230sqft

Construction

Planked in Teak, varnished since her launch. All copper fastened to heavy sawn Oak frames with a single intermediate steamed Rock Elm timber.

Oak stern and stem post with an Elm keel. Wrought iron floors on each sawn frame.

External lead ballast keel of 8 tons held with bronze keel bolts. Keel and bolts removed during refit and found to be in excellent condition.

Solid yacht laid teak deck, caulked and payed with Sikaflex. Deck hatches, skylights and coamings in varnished teak. High varnished teak toe rail all round with stainless stanchions and guard rails.

Self draining cockpit with scrubbed teak thwarts and varnished teak coamings. Wheel steering on cables to the quadrant.

Rig

Bermudan ketch rig on new keel stepped Sailspar alloy masts. Slab reefing varnished wooden booms.

Heavy stainless steel standing rigging to internal stainless chain plates. Jumper struts on the main eliminate the need for running backstays.

Cutter headed with a bowsprit. The jib is on a Profurl roller reefing system and the boomed staysail is hanked onto the inner forestay.

Primary and secondary sheet winches in the cockpit with halyard and reefing winches on each mast.

All new running rigging, mostly Ash blocks used.

Mainsail, yankee jib and staysail from 2007, mizzen and spinnaker are older.

Machinery

Perkins 4236 78hp 4cyl diesel installed new in 1977. Removed and professionally rebuilt in recent refit.

Manual gearbox to a fixed 3 blade bronze propeller.

New engine mounts, wiring loom, fuel system and fuel tank, exhaust system and seacocks.

Completely re-wired in recent refit. 3 x 12 volt 100ah batteries for engine starting and domestics.

500l of water in 2 stainless tanks under the cabin sole.

270l steel fuel tank in the engine room.

New stainless fuel tank.

Accommodation

The interior is largely original with plenty of period joinery and fittings. Mostly oiled or painted Oak panelling with Teak sole boards.

8 berths in total, with 3 twin cabins and 2 settee berths in the saloon.

Companionway steps down into the boat with the heads to starboard and chart desk to port.

Heads has a Baby Blake sea toilet which discharges directly overboard and an original hand basin with hot and cold pressurised water.

Chart desk is new with stowage below and all necessary equipment above.

Port side door going aft into the aft owners cabin with a single berth either side and a porcelain hand basin. Door from this cabin going aft into the engine room.

Going forward from the companionway through a port side door into the main saloon with stunning original panelled joinery. A settee berth either side with a central varnished Oak dropleaf table. Dickenson Newport diesel cabin heater in forward stbd corner.

Going forward from the saloon, port side door into the guest cabin with 2 single berths and a hand basin. Starboard side door into the galley.

Galley has a Force 10 3 burner gas stove with oven and grill. Twin stainless sinks with pressurised hot and cold water. Skylight above for light and ventilation. Plenty of storage space above and below the galley.

Forward through the galley into the forward cabin with two single berths and a fore hatch above.

Rapunzel is fully deboxed. She is standing, supported by a Kaiser stand. Her hair is behind her back, and draped under her skirt around to her front.

Rapunzel has been deboxed and her hair combed out to detangle it. The section whose nd was tied in a knot got frizzy and came out shorter than the rest of her hair by a couple of inches. The straighter sections are 24.5 inches long. This compares with 12 inches of hair on the current Classic Rapunzel (2017), and 17 inches on the original Classic and Parks Rapunzel (2010-11) and the 2015 Designer Rapunzel.

I got the Rapunzel and Flynn doll set today during lunchtime at my local Disney Store. There were only 8 people entered into the raffle for 14 doll sets. At 1:10 pm they told us that they didn't have to call out names, so we just lined up at the registers in a random order. I happened to be the second in line. I was given three sets to choose from. I picked the first one. Even though one of the sets had a nice number (1133), the first set looked better to me. I took photos of the display dolls while waiting for the announcement. After I bought my dolls, I placed them on a table outside the store, and took a few photos of them. I forgot to take a photo of my CoA at the store, but my set is #4167 of 6000.

The set was released online in the US ShopDisney site at about 12:00 noon PST.
