Carl Jacob Jucker (1902 - 1997), Schweizer Silberschmied und Industriedesigner.
Nach seinem Abschluss der vierjährigen Silberschmiedlehre an der Kunstgewerbeschule in Zürich 1922, ging er als Schüler an das Bauhaus nach Weimar. Er absolvierte 1922 den Vorkurs bei Georg Muche und begann anschliessend eine Ausbildung in der Metallwerkstatt. Hier traf er mit Wilhelm Wagenfeld zusammen, mit dem er gemeinsam 1923 die Glasvariante der Bauhaus-Leuchte entwickelte.
Nach dem Vorkurs bei Georg Muche wechselte Jucker in die Metallwerkstatt, die von Christian Dell als Werkmeister und László Moholy-Nagy als Formmeister geleitet wurde. Der Unterricht bei Dell inspirierte ihn zu seinen ersten Leuchtenentwürfen, die er für das Weimarer Musterhaus Am Horn entwarf.
Er verwendete bei seinen Entwürfen bevorzugt technische Materialien, wie Glas und Metall, verspiegelte Glühlampen und Reflektoren. In seinem ersten Jahr in der Metallwerkstatt arbeitete er an Prototypen einer geometrisch einfachen und funktionalen Tischlampe, die Wilhelm Wagenfeld 1924 mit mäßiger Resonanz auf der Leipziger Messe zu einem Verkaufspreis von 18 Mark vorstellte.
Funktionale Elemente, wie die Stromzuführung wurden von Juckers in die Gestaltung einbezogen. So führte er das Stromkabel sichtbar durch einen Lampenschaft aus Glas. Die Lampe besteht aus den für das Bauhaus charakteristischen geometrischen Elementen: kreisförmige Grundplatte, zylinderförmiger Lampenschaft, Zugschalter mit einer Metallkugel und einem Lampenschirm aus Opalglas oder aus Jenaer Glas in Form einer 5/8-Kugel.
Jucker gilt als einer der ersten Bauhaus-Studenten, die Tischleuchten aus Glas entworfen haben.
Im Gegensatz zu Juckers Tischlampe zeichnete sich der Entwurf von Wilhelm Wagenfeld durch die Verwendung von vernickeltem Metall zur Gestaltung vom Leuchtenfuss und -schaft aus. 1927 ging die Leuchte in Serienproduktion und gilt als eine der Stilikonen des Bauhauses, die gegenwärtig von der Bremer Firma Tecnolumen als Repliken in beiden Materialausführungen hergestellt wird. Die künstlerische Urheberschaft der Bauhaus-Leuchte ist aufgrund des Fehlens von Dokumenten bis heute umstritten.
Für die Variante mit dem Glasschaft werden in der neueren Literatur Jucker und Wagenfeld angegeben, wobei Juckers Anteil die Entwicklung des Glasfuss, des Lampenschaftes sowie der sichtbaren Gewinde umfasst, während Wagenfeld die Glaskuppel, deren Halterung sowie das Metallrohr im Glasschaft entwarf. Der Lampenfuss mit dem Glasschaft wurde auch noch für andere Lampenentwürfe Wagenfelds verwendet.
Im Jahr 1967 überarbeitete Jucker für eine Replik der italienischen Firma Imago dp die Leuchte noch einmal grundlegend, insbesondere im Bereich der Gewinde. Dieselbe Firma stellte eine weitere, schwenkbare Tischlampe sowie ein Set aus einer Tisch- und Stehlampe von Jucker aus dem Jahr 1923 her.

After completing his four-year silversmith apprenticeship at the School of Applied Arts in Zurich in 1922, he went to the Bauhaus in Weimar as a student. He completed the preliminary course with Georg Muche in 1922 and then began training in the metal workshop. Here he met Wilhelm Wagenfeld, with whom he developed the glass version of the Bauhaus lamp in 1923.
After the preliminary course with Georg Muche, Jucker switched to the metal workshop, which was led by Christian Dell as master craftsman and László Moholy-Nagy as master mould maker. Dell's lessons inspired him to create his first lamp designs, which he designed for the Am Horn show house in Weimar.
In his designs, he favoured technical materials such as glass and metal, mirrored light bulbs and reflectors. In his first year in the metal workshop, he worked on prototypes of a geometrically simple and functional table lamp, which Wilhelm Wagenfeld presented at the Leipzig Trade Fair in 1924 at a retail price of 18 marks, to moderate acclaim.
Juckers incorporated functional elements such as the power supply into the design. He led the power cable visibly through a glass lamp shaft. The lamp consists of the geometric elements characteristic of the Bauhaus: circular base plate, cylindrical lamp stem, pull switch with a metal ball and a lampshade made of opal glass or Jena glass in the shape of a 5/8 ball.
Jucker is considered one of the first Bauhaus students to design glass table lamps.
In contrast to Jucker's table lamp, Wilhelm Wagenfeld's design was characterised by the use of nickel-plated metal for the base and stem of the lamp. The lamp went into series production in 1927 and is considered one of the style icons of the Bauhaus, which is currently produced as a replica in both material versions by the Bremen-based company Tecnolumen. The artistic authorship of the Bauhaus lamp is still disputed today due to the lack of documentation.
In more recent literature, Jucker and Wagenfeld are credited for the version with the glass stem, with Jucker's contribution comprising the development of the glass base, the lamp stem and the visible threads, while Wagenfeld designed the glass dome, its holder and the metal tube in the glass stem. The lamp base with the glass stem was also used for other lamp designs by Wagenfeld.
In 1967, Jucker fundamentally reworked the lamp once again for a replica by the Italian company Imago dp, particularly in the area of the threads. The same company produced another swivelling table lamp as well as a set consisting of a table and floor lamp by Jucker from 1923.

I switched it a up a little bit tonight. I wanted to get back to using negative space as a design element. So I lost the border I have been using on the rest of these, and I also didn't use any text. I know some people may argue that this won't flow with the rest of the ones I have already done...but the image makes me feel happy, and adding text and a border onto it ruined the calming feeling I think it evokes now. It feels very zen...just breathe it in...
These are coats I made for the little girls out of my own Bohemian fabrics and with Denyse Schmidt's Flea Market Fancy. The pattern is my own design :)
