“Skylab Expedition 3
“The three of us dreamed up the concept, Bill Pogue put together the description, and Barbara Matelski from the Johnson Space Center Graphics Department did the artwork. We gave our concept to several artists, but none of them came up with a design that delivered the message, so we rough sketched our idea, and Barbara put it together.”
— Jerry Carr, from All We Did Was Fly to the Moon
“The symbols in the patch refer to the three major areas of investigation in the mission. The tree represents man’s natural environment and refers to the objective of advancing the study of earth resources. The hydrogen atom, as the basic building block of the universe, represents man’s exploration of the physical world, his application of knowledge, and his development of technology. Since the sun is composed primarily of hydrogen, the hydrogen symbol also refers to the Solar Physics mission objectives.
“The human silhouette represents mankind and the human capacity to direct technology with a wisdom tempered by his regard for his natural environment. It also relates to the Skylab medical studies of man himself.
“The rainbow, adopted from the Biblical story of the Flood, symbolizes the promise that is offered to man. It embraces man and extends to the tree and hydrogen atom, emphasizing man’s pivotal role in the conciliation of technology with nature by a humanistic application of our scientific knowledge.”
— From the Skylab Expedition 3 astronauts’ calling card
The artwork is very nicely put together, and Matelski obviously takes into account the limitations of the silk screen process used to fabricate the beta cloth patches. Matelski also did the artwork for the Apollo 16 patch.
The Lion Brothers version of this patch has a yellow comet in the blue background around the top of the “3,” which represents the observations of Comet Kohoutek.”

The ‘official’ caption:
“This is the emblem for the third manned Skylab mission. It will be a mission of up to 56 days. Skylab is an experimental space station consisting of a 100-ton laboratory complex in which medical, scientific and technological experiments will be performed in Earth orbit. The members of the crew will be astronaut Gerald P. Carr, commander; scientist-astronaut Edward G. Gibson, science pilot; and astronaut William R.
Pogue, pilot. The symbols in the patch refer to the three major areas of investigation proposed in the mission. The tree represents man's natural environment and relates directly to the Skylab mission objectives of advancing the study of Earth resources. The hydrogen atom, as the basic building block of the universe, represents man's exploration of the physical world, his application of knowledge, and his development of technology. Since the sun is composed primarily of hydrogen, it is appropriate that the symbol refers to the solar physics mission objectives. The human silhouette represents mankind and the human capacity to direct technology with a wisdom tempered by regard for his natural environment. It also directly relates to the Skylab medical studies of man himself. The rainbow, adopted from the Biblical story of the flood, symbolizes the promise that is offered man. It embraces man and extends to the tree and the hydrogen atom emphasizing man's pivotal role in the conciliation of technology with nature.”

Old Swedish countryside cottage. It's color radiation caught my lens as I was passing, Saturday morning.
Caption: Using the "narrow"-lens and the native HDR setting of my Xiaomi Mi6 smartphone camera, I cut as close to the chimney-top as possible. Due to my frog perspective, I didn't want to skew the lines of the cottage (as I so irritatingly did sideways).

Image Description from historic lecture booklet: "The geisha houses, rather humble, certainly unpretentious abodes, group themselves in certain quarters, and the hiring of the girls is done methodically through a central office. The hiring should be accomplished by the restaurant keeper or by the housewife as early in the afternoon as possible, but not after six in the evening, unless absolutely unavoidable. For the preparation of the Geisha is an elaborate affair from the wonderful coiling and adorning of her hair to the fit of her white, heelless shoes. They are taken in rickishas to the house of entertainment and carried home in the same way when all is over.
The ordinary examples of the fine arts that one meets in the homes of Japan are the pictorial scroll or Kakemono with a picture above three feet long and half the width that hangs in the place of honor--in a recess called the tokonoma, and possibly a bronze or pottery statuette standing in a low pedestal in the same recess. A fine vase of metal or else a wonderfully decorated sword often takes the place of the statuette. Whatever it may be, it is there to be judged on its merits free of all competition with others of its kind, for the good lady of the house, though she owns ever so many pictured scrolls or statuettes or vases, will only exhibit on of a kind at a time. No walls hung with scores of pictures or shelves, or an array of pedestals about the rooms, enter in other scheme of domestic decoration in Japan, In some of the of the wealthiest homes, particularly those of noblemen who have traveled abroad, a "Western parlor" may be found furnished sumptuously in European style, and on whose walls hangs oil paintings in gold frames bought in the course of residence in European capitals."

Description: Although Thomas Smillie, the Smithsonian's first photographer and curator of photography, used images to catalog much of the institution's physical object collection, he also extensively photographed pages of books on topics of personal interest to him as a way of copying the material for future use. Smillie also photographed letters and documents as a method of preserving the Smithsonian's records.
Creator/Photographer: Thomas Smillie
Birth Date: 1843
Death Date: 1917
Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1843, Thomas William Smillie immigrated to the United States with his family when he five years old. After studying chemistry and medicine at Georgetown University, he took a job as a photographer at the Smithsonian Institution, where he stayed for nearly fifty years until his death in 1917. Smillie's duties and accomplishments at the Smithsonian were vast: he documented important events and research trips, photographed the museum's installations and specimens, created reproductions for use as printing illustrations, performed chemical experiments for Smithsonian scientific researchers, and later acted as the head and curator of the photography lab. Smillie's documentation of each Smithsonian exhibition and installation resulted in an informal record of all of the institution's art and artifacts. In 1913 Smillie mounted an exhibition on the history of photography to showcase the remarkable advancements that had been made in the field but which he feared had already been forgotten.

Gerald Finzi (1901-1956)
Description of upper lights, left to right:
The most westerly light is about Finzi's discovery of Thomas Traherne, and his lovely parallel wonder "Dies Natalis". Finzi found joy in the visionary immediacy of Traherne, in his child-like clarity and delight. The imagery here returns to the particularity of Traherne's world: "I was entertained like an angel with the works of God... The green trees when I saw them first transported and ravished me... these little limbs, these eyes and hands... this panting heart". The landscape is that of the Cotswold Edge, of Chosen Hill, significant at the spring of Finzi's life, and at the end.
Next, we are with Thomas Hardy, always important to Finzi. This light refers especially to the fierce and wistful "Proud Songsters" and to the early "Voices from things growing in a churchyard". Finzi felt profoundly in tune with Hardy's sense of transience, of time passing, with his wry attitude to resurrection, and with his intimacy with English rural life. Here, we see a song of thrushes above a great vale, a huge yew in a daisyed churchyard below. In spring 1940, Finzi, on a Hardy pilgrimage, walked over Bulbarrow, passing Woolland church, where is one of the greatest of all yew trees, and then Bell Hill [where lives the author of these designs] overlooking Hardy's "Vale of Little Dairies".
The third light is about passing through... In 1956, the year of his death, Finzi wrote to Cedric Thorpe Davie of finding oneself "on the other side of the curtain amongst the ill and sick". We see a stumbling figure; he has already passed through the veil of illness, and must soon go further. That solemn and beautiful song [a Shakespeare setting] "Fear no more the heat o' the sun" should be in mind.
Gerald Finzi was preoccupied with the idea of finding friendship and inspiration across the centuries. In the fourth light we see a sleeping poet... "I who am dead a thousand years, and wrote this sweet archaic song, send you my words for messengers". Finzi thought of tradition as " a cable along which one can speak to infinity". And the form of this speaking? "If he cannot bring a cedar, let him bring a shrubbe" [but a shrubbe can be more extraordinary than a cedar]. Someone, in the upper part of the light, seems to hear...
New stained glass window by Thomas Denny in the north chantry chapel of the Lady Chapel, Gloucester Cathedral. Dedicated June 2016.
Gerald Finzi was a major English composer of the 20th century and has strong links with Gloucester and Gloucestershire. As a young man at the outset of his career he lived in Painswick for four years, between 1922 and 1926. Although he never lived in Gloucestershire again, he was a regular visitor to the county, especially for the Three Choirs Festival. His last major work, the Cello Concerto, was given its premiere at the Cheltenham Festival in 1955. It was first broadcast from Cheltenham Town Hall the following year on 26th September but Finzi was too ill to attend the performance. He died the next day and his ashes were scattered on May Hill, one of the great landmarks of Gloucestershire, as he had wished.
As a young composer Finzi was greatly influenced by the work of Ivor Gurney. When Finzi heard Gurney's "Sleep" sung late in 1920, he identified in that work what he later described as "such intensity contained in lyric form", and "an incandescence [...] that tells of something burning too brightly to last, such as you see in the filament of an electric bulb before it burns out". Although the two men never met in life, they shared a love of poetry and music that unites them in their creative legacy to the nation and now brings them together in a place they both loved.
The meadow and the Cherry Blossoms...
Description:
It was a bit cloudy day. The ambiance seemed to me a perfect place for peace, and tranquility. Hardly 8-10 tourists were roaming silently. Beyond the gate there is a open meadows with few oaks, cherries, and other trees. The road ends in front of an old monastery with a courtyard. At the back of this monastery, few steps down, there is another small temple, that seemed to me very very old and almost deserted...and I think this one is the oldest construction. The frescoes on the wall are mostly damaged but they reflect some of the oldest Buddhist mythologies. Some symbolic presentations were there reflecting traditional wisdom and faith. The ambiance surrounding this temple was truly magical for those who seek tranquility, and peace of mind. I spent hours there amidst nature and silence. Cold breeze and mist were covering the place so often, transforming our body, mind and soul into full of happiness and peace. I'm sure everybody will turn spiritual once they spend some time here.
My Experience:
Borong, a remote and peaceful hamlet with abundance of unspoiled nature, under subdivision of Rabangla, in south Sikkim, is situated 17 kms from the tourist town of Rabangla (Ravangla). Being 120 kms away from Siliguri in North Bengal, India, Rabangla is situated at an elevation of 8000 ft with its famous Maenam wildlife santuary (35 square kilometres) for Great Himalayan Bears, Red Pandas, and Birds. The literal meaning of 'Maenam-La' is "Treasure house of medicines". Maenam is also famous for a 12km trekking from Rabangla to Maenam top at 3140m, for its spectacular lookout point. We had a wonderful trekking experience this time, through this forest for a stretch of 18 kms (up and down). It seemed to me truly a paradise for nature lovers.
Borong is a place where you will hear only the sounds of your foot steps apart from the singing of birds of varied species, especially during dawn. River Rangit flows downhill through the gorge. People there, are so simple, warm, and honest...distinctly different from urban complexities and consumerisms. Being one of the oldest hubs of Buddhist culture, Borong hosts the oldest monastery in Sikkim, built in 1730, is known as Old Ralong Monastery (probably known as Borong Monastery). A new monastery, called Ralong Monastery, was built later, only 3 kms away from the old one. Both the monasteries are the treasure house of architectures, frescos, artifacts, and religious herritage. Many of the Buddhist Monks seemed to me as the epitome of holiness.
Borong is a model village for organic cultivation where everything is organic...including tea and alcohol. It has recently gained fame due to increasing popularity of village tourism and eco-tourism activities. Every small house of the villagers has a bit of land cultivating organic tea, vegetables, fruits and a variety of plant spices, especially cardamom and turmeric. Tastes and flavors of foods, vegetables are mouth-watering. Drinking- water is straight from the natural springs. It is strictly a plastic and smoking free zone. In a clear day you will find majestic Mt Kanchenjungha (28,170 ft, third highest mountain in the world), Mt. Pandim (21,952 ft), Mt. Narsing (19,029 ft) and Black Kabru. [en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mountains_by_elevation].
In the month of March-April you will have a spectacular display of Rhododendrons everywhere here, and in the late October, awesome Cherry blossoms all around.
We stayed in 'Wild Flower Retreat', a wonderful resort in Borong. The hospitality, food and lodging was simply amazing there. It was my immense pleasure to relax with a cup of coffee and viewing the great mountaiin peaks right in front from the resort courtyard. We had a wonderful experience of an unique way of making 'Organic Paper' from a special kind of plant cultivated in the village, originally discovered in this region of Himalayan forests. The product of this small scale industry, within the premises of 'Wild Flower Retreat', reminded me the Papyrus of Ancient Egypt.
Borong is a place, I'm sure, with all its grandeur, beauty and uniqueness will call you again and again...anytime a year...if you want to escape from your burdened and stressful life, and acquire some knowledge and wisdome, you never had before. Once you go there...will feel the pulse...and energy you build-upfrom inside...an 'Elixer' having a power of its own, much superior than any tonic prepared in human laboratories...!!!
👠There is no end to the adventures.👢

DESCRIPTION
Antique late-17th Century British very rare and original Robert Morden (1650-1703) map of Britannia Romana, publication 1695 or later, Robert Morden (1650–1703) is without a doubt the greatest English cartographer of the 17th century. He was a publisher, bookseller, mapseller, cartographer, globe builder, and instrument maker from England. Along with Emanuel Bowen, John Cary and John Speed, Robert Morden contributed enormously to the development of aesthetical cartography in Britain.
From 1675 until 1703, Morden worked at the Atlas in New Cheapside and the Atlas in Cornhill in London. His body of work in the field of cartographical works was extensive and diverse. It contained geographical playing cards, huge size maps on several sheets, the most notable of which being William Morgan's 12-sheet layout of London.
Some of his best-known maps, particularly those of South Wales, North Wales, and the English Counties were originally published in a revised edition of Camden's "Britannia" in 1695, and were reprinted in 1722, 1753, and 1772. These maps were newly etched and based on new information from gentlemen in each county. Each featured a cartouche that was ornamented and displayed a number of geographical names. In 1701, Morden also published a set of miniature county maps known as Miniature Mordens.
Morden's approach to mapmaking was simpler than those of the previous century: he would avoid the over decorative ornaments and heavily embossed fonts, like on the maps of Speed, Blaeu, and the like. Instead, he would focus on the clarity of the information. One of his most prominent pieces, the map of Scotland, published in 1695, was largely a duplicate of the 1654 map done by Robert Gordon of Straloch and published by Joan Blaeu in sections (e.g. Skye and the Western Isles); other areas show signs of more precise cartography. In comparison with Morden’s technique, even John Cary’s approach seems almost indelicate and overly-complicated.
When Morden has to show hilly terrain on his maps, the one aspect of the earlier, more ornate style of mapping may be discovered. Hilly areas, such as the Lake District (at the time, the counties of Cumberland and Westmoreland) and some parts of Wales (particularly Monmouthshire), are depicted with a plethora of artistically engraved hills, which are not strictly accurate in dimension but are considered sufficient to show relative heights within a group of hills and add an aesthetic that is lost on many later maps. This very special feature makes maps by the renowned cartographer especially collectible and appealing to antiques hunters.

Description: Powwows are large social gatherings of Native Americans who follow traditional dances started centuries ago by their ancestors, and which continually evolve to include contemporary aspects. These events of drum music, dancing, singing, artistry and food, are attended by Natives and non-Natives, all of whom join in the dancing and take advantage of the opportunity to see old friends and teach the traditional ways to a younger generation. During the National Powwow, the audience see dancers in full regalia compete in several dance categories, including Men and Women's Golden Age (ages 50 and older); Men's Fancy Dance, Grass and Traditional (Northern and Southern); Women's Jingle Dress, Fancy Shawl, and Traditional (Northern and Southern); Teens (13-17); Juniors (6-12) and Tiny Tots (ages 5 and younger). The drum groups are the heart of all powwows and provide the pulsating and thunderous beats that accompany a dancer's every movement. The powwow is led by three "host drums" that showcase three distinct styles of singing (Northern, Southern and contemporary) and represent the best examples of each style. The drum contest highlights groups of 10 to 12 members each, and they sing traditional family songs that are passed down orally from one generation to the next. The National Museum of the American Indian sponsored the National Powwow in 2002, 2005, and 2007 as a way of presenting to the public the diversity and social traditions of contemporary Native cultures.
