Caught the last of the fog being burned away as I arrived at Crystal Springs this afternoon for a perfect afternoon ride on the trails.

The top of Pen-y-Ghent was busy: not surprising really given that it was sunny, warm and a Saturday. Most folk had taken the easier ascent from Horton-in-Ribblesdale via Horton Scar Lane.
The valley gently sloped to the southeast for almost three kilometres and then swung hard to the east and descended swiftly with a river into a valley that Gustaf Mannerheim called Khatun Art or “woman’s mountain ridge or mountain pass.”

I liked the geometric echos of the stairs and pathway. Later I noticed the optical illusion, similar to Escher's ascending-descending series.
