The city of Tacoma, WA with Mt. Rainier pulled in close with the telephoto lens. We are fortunate to have views like this one from the sidewalk right in front of the Lobster Shop on Ruston Way.

It's a long 98 second exposure with the 10 stop ND filter and polarizer stacked. ND stands for neutral density. They are just a very dark filter for the long exposures that do not change the color. I'm used to counting off seconds while holding the shutter open in Bulb mode from the film days. I counted to 90 and didn't miss it by too much. With an exposure that long a few seconds one way or the other doesn't matter much. With the ND filter on there everything looks black through the viewfinder so you have to focus first then carefully put the ND and PL filter on without disrupting that. Exposure is a bit trickier. I set the shutter speed to it's slowest (without going to Bulb mode) of 30 seconds, then by adjusting the ISO and aperture the light meter still works and will show when you are in the ballpark for a 30 second exposure. Then lowering the ISO a couple of stops more a 90 second exposure should be about right and going to Bulb mode I held the shutter open for 90 seconds with the remote release. I didn't do something quite right because the image came out quite underexposed. Normally a quick adjustment, peek at the histogram, and we'd be ready for another exposure, but there is not much time for that when it's getting dark and long exposures. Editing with that raw file still pulled up a fairly decent image but it could have been a lot better though and easier to process. Always shoot raw. A 6 stop ND filter would have been a lot easier to work with at dusk than the 10 stop. And if you're on a Windows machine give the free FastStone Image Viewer a try for your everyday image viewer. It displays our raw files and other file types really fast, and makes culling the folders a lot quicker than Lr for me.

The seasons are changing. It is transitioning from spring into summer, the leaves are on the trees, the roar of the springs snow melt is gone, and summer showers have begun. Change can always be hard, intimidating, anxious, but also exciting. Change has the opportunity to create something beautiful! Some changes are necessary, others not. Some big, some small. One thing that is always true about change is that it is always an opportunity to grow.

Have a wonderful weekend to all.

It’s interesting that the most densely populated cities in the world can also be the most fun to photograph.

On the bike somewhere in between IJsselstein and Montfoort, Holland.

Something tells me this farmer needs more trees around his meadows...the cow-density is huge at certain spots...

Yosemite, Merced river

We spent an extended weekend in the Eastern Sierra mountains to see the fall colors. On the first day we went to see the tufa at Mono Lake - no fall colors there, nevertheless an interesting spectacle of nature in the late afternoon. It was quite windy, and there were considerable waves - the long exposure conveys the timeless nature this scenery.

Tufa are limestone towers, formed when carbonate minerals precipitate out of underground spring water entering the very salty water of Mono Lake. The lake level dropped, and we can see now the tufa above the lake.

I processed a balanced, a paintery, and a photographic HDR photo from a RAW exposure, merged them selectively, and carefully adjusted the color balance and curves. I welcome and appreciate constructive feedback.

Far west - Sunset at Neist Point, looking out across the Minch.

The narrow, rocky finger that is home to Neist Point lighthouse, is the furthest west you can travel in mainland UK without having to board a ferry. A location that’s hard to beat as one of the best places in the UK to witness sunset, especially so when decent conditions prevail as I was lucky enough to experience.

Sunset over a cluster of cholla cacti in Tucson Mountain Park. This is a single shot with a 2-stop Lee hard graduated neutral density filter to lower the intensity of the sky. I find that I much prefer using physical filters to doing HDR or luminosity masking, because the final image looks more natural when you're not combining multiple images. And this from an admitted focus-stacking addict!

New Perspective

I never had this view on the South Pier of IJmuiden before. I arrived here rather late, when the sun was already very low on the horizon. While I normally walk to the pier and shoot the sunset from there, there was no way I would get there in time. And so I looked for alternative viewpoints. This is the one I thought worked best. And I must say, there was absolutely nothing wrong with this foreground.

Who goes on holiday and sets their alarm for several hours before sunrise . . . well, I did! The purpose of the early rise, just like my visit last September, was in the hopes of selecting ‘my spot’ for my tripod to capture the sunrise at Mesa Arch before the throngs of photographers arrived. I was the only car on the road leaving Moab, everyone else was still sensibly in bed apparently. I didn’t even spot any headlights or taillights during the drive to Canyonlands National Park or even on the park roads leading to the parking area for Mesa Arch. Maybe this time I had departed at an appropriately early enough time.

I parked, grabbed my kit, flicked my headlamp on and headed on the path to Mesa Arch. My pace on the path was a bit slower this morning as I had been out the morning prior for a cloudy sunless sunrise and the path was coated in ice from freezing rain the night prior and a bit treacherous (learned by sliding into a pine tree when I was unable to stop on ice coated slick rock). Today the eastern horizon was just beginning to brighten as I arrived at the arch, where I discovered I was the first to arrive!! On my September visit there were already 15 to 20 tripods with accompanying cameras and photographers set up waiting for sunrise . . . this time I was alone for the moment. It was a joy to be able to explore and select my location without having to rush before someone else took it. I even had time to enjoy waiting for the sunrise and the crowds. The sunrise did come as expected, but the other photographers didn’t! I had Mesa Arch to myself for the sunrise.

The beauty of the sunrise here is something one truly needs to witness in person. As the sun broke the horizon the first sunburst occurs, but the best is yet to come. Initially there is a lack of reflected light on the underside of Mesa Arch. But as the sun continues to rise and begins to cross the underside of the arch, a 2nd sunburst occurs while the reflected light illuminates the underbelly of the arch turning the sandstone a glowing red. After capturing the sunrise from near the edge of the rim, with the lack of other photographers I could back up and capture the entire arch at sunrise (an earlier image). The fact I was enjoying this sunrise . . . at this location . . . alone . . . priceless!

In the distance highlighted by the rising sun is the Washer Woman (derived from its resemblance of a tall and slender woman reaching her hands into a tub) and to its right is the taller Monster Tower. Washer Woman and Monster Tower are each over 600 feet tall. Behind the Washer Woman is the Sandcastle. On the horizon are the La Sal Mountains.

A fabulous sunrise at Mesa Arch alone to begin my day, followed by a short drive back to Moab and breakfast at the Jail House Cafe before heading south to Monument Valley.

Fire in the fells - A wonderfully calm and serene dawn sees the Langdale Pikes lit up as though they are on fire, perfectly reflected in Blea Tarn.

The intense sunrise light catches the Langdale Pikes beautifully and makes for a magnificent scene across the wonderfully still water of the tarn.
