One can not embrace the 'New Topographics' movement of the 1970's with their human altered landscapes without giving attention to the man who introduced the poetic beauty of nature through his impeccably rendered images.

I have always looked for that one scene which would offer the chance to grasp the range of tonality which Ansel Adams was famous for.

His one image I am particularly enamored by because of how it runs the range of zone densities is "Silverton Colorado 1951".

I also like the way he manages the perspective or lack thereof in the scene.

There at the side of the road I finally found that zone rich location I was searching for.

It is apparent after seeing my previous recent monochrome images that though they have fair black and white harmonics in comparison this analog photo and it's nuances and lighting is my little treasure.

Many thanks for visits, comments and faves, most appreciated

Bangkok, Thailand’s capital, is a sprawling metropolis known for its ornate shrines and vibrant street life.

Europe, Greece, South Aegean, Cyclades, Santorini (Thira), Fira (cut from all sides).

With its jaw-dropping vistas, Thira takes ones breath away. And this has of course consequences for the number of people that visit the island. On an average day, there are three or four cruise ships in the Caldera and together they can disgorge up to 10.000 tourists. And there are also the island hoppers (we) and the package holidaymakers.

The island sees to it that they all can eat, drink and shop. And for a part also stay. This, of course, has spatial consequences, as is shown in this capture of the centre of Fira. There is a nice sense of the typical South-European staggered white box urbanism... But there's a sense of an oppressive touristic entropy too.

Check out the two previous post for information about the geologic background/history of the island.

Further experiments with a neutral density filter AND a polariser on an extremely dull, dark day lead to an absurdly slow shutter speed. Once again I was up to my knees in the burn, but at least it wasn't raining this time! If this was Ireland instead of Scotland I'd be looking for the leprechaun!

It seems each time I visit the rail corridor in Salt Lake City, Utah, another apartment building is going up. July 17, 2023 was no exception as I witnessed SEVEN new buildings under construction between 4th North and North Temple streets. While a mural of the Greek god Poseidon looks on, Roper's "pampered pet", GP38N No. 578, leads a 21-car Chevron Local along the construction zone.

March 2016

In "Explore" on April 8th 2016.

That is its actual name, by the way, and not the photographer’s reflections on a challenging identification.

In drought conditions this summer the insects seemed lower in density, especially because most species of wildflower failed to fully flower. It was the first time I had seen thistles, for example, brown and dead without ever having opened their flowers.

The Ottawa River, though with significantly lower water levels, was one of the few places to find wildflowers - like this Swamp Milkweed - and the insects that pursued them. And, with the lower density, it was easier to discern different species. I am always looking at bumblebees the way I look at Gulls in the winter: don’t assume they are all the usual suspects (here, that means Herring and Ring-billed).

And that is how I found this creature, a first in my experience. The name itself is unusual - I assume that the perplexing/tricky qualifier has to do with identification. But in fact it is pretty straightforward (though less so in this image - more of the field marks are evident in other less successful images I came away with). The yellow tones a brighter, and there is an almost complete absence of black hairs at the front end of the bee. Towards its back end black sections come out of the yellow, but only partially.

The species is a wetland and woodland specialist, unlike other bumblebees, but I suspect the drought conditions made bedfellows of many different species. Go to the flowers!

I was rushing to make this image. As I was driving down the road to the edge of the main car park at Attenborough Nature Reserve the sky was already happening. This view will be very familiar to visitors to this spot. The light was deceptively tricky and I had to combine two neutral density filters in order to expose the image correctly.

Location: Zoutkamp - in the province of Groningen - the Netherlands.

The fishing-village Zoutkamp is established at the place where the rivers Lauwers, Reitdiep and Hunze meet and flow into the sea. In 1575 they founded an entrenchment, which was named Soltcamp. That is where the name Zoutkamp comes from.

Zoutkamp is a picturesque village, built around the entrenchment and the port. In 1600 the inhabitants were mainly soldiers, shrimp-, plaice- and scallop-fishers, smugglers, salt-makers and cheapjacks. Zoutkamp has lost a lot of his fishing-activities to Lauwersoog. At the moment Zoutkamp is still the home-port of the traditional sailers and the Bruine Vloot. The locks of Zoutkamp are a unique monument. These locks are built in 1877 and consist of a lift-lock with six heavy doors.

This photograph was taken behind these locks.

More info about the picturesque fishing-village Zoutkamp and its legends can be found here.

2 different textures were used with fine details. Edges and other details were treated with the Smudge tool with special Smudge brushes at different sizes and strengths after using the Diffuse > Anisotropic filter found - filter > stylize menu. If you'd like to archive fine smooth and sharp details, you have to over-sharpen the image before using the Anisotropic filter and get rid of sharpening artifacts with the smudge tool. Good luck!.

Oh, and the two pigeons were there too, but were shot separately with f/4 @ 1/160 sec. and placed back into the composition with a layer mask.

Kabelvåg, Gábelváhke, or Gávvalváhk is a village in Vågan Municipality in Nordland county, Norway. It is located on the southern shore of the island of Austvågøya in the Lofoten archipelago. Kabelvåg lies about 5 kilometres to the southwest of the town of Svolvær, the administrative centre of Vågan Municipality. The 1.37-square-kilometre village has a population of 2,291 and a population density of 1,672 inhabitants per square kilometre.

The village was founded as "Vågan" in the early 12th century by King Øystein Magnusson, who built a church and a fishermen's hostel there. According to the Heimskringla, there was something resembling a town there several centuries earlier — the first known town in North Norway, known as "Vågar".

There are several attractions in Kabelvåg: the Lofoten Museum, Lofoten Aquarium, and Espolin Gallery. Vågan Church is located in Kabelvåg. The European route E10 highway runs through the village.

The education sector includes a college for film and other art forms: Nordland kunst- og filmhøgskole (NKFS).
