Elements of Art: Texture

This photo uses a single subject to create a unified image. However, there are numerous variations in both color and texture to add interest. There is a strong sense of contrast with the wide range of tones and rings/lines in the stacked wood. The setting sun highlights the nooks and crannies of the dry wood.

What amazes me is that barely 100 years ago, this was all impassible forest. So we cut it all down and moved a hill (the sort that would be called a mountain in Scotland) to create downtown Seattle, whose real estate was at that time occupied by fish, crabs, and the giant Pacific octopus.

Read Anne Dillard's The Living sometime to get an idea of the scope of change that has been wrought in 100 years in Washington State. if you live here, it'll floor you.

Look towards the bottom right of the photo to see a building that dates from Seattle's early years, the one with H.W. BAKER LINEN CO stenciled on the side of the building.

The result of the previous exploration...Not exactly what i was going for in the beginning but definitely something I love now. I guess this is the reason we play: to come up with something unexpected that we love even more than the original vision.
