Charles Demuth (1883-1935) was one of the leading artists during the American Modernism era. He was distinguished for intimate watercolors and cubic architectural paintings. Demuth studied art at Académie Julian in Paris, where he was welcomed into the avant-garde art scene and met other American Cubism artists like Marsden Hartley. His watercolor figures have a weightless and surrealistic character with a sensitive linear style, in which he illustrated plays and novels such as Émile Zola's Nana. He also depicted an evolving gay scene of encounters at bath houses through watercolors for his close friends, like the "Turkish Bath", works that now are of great historical significance. Demuth later employed a cubist technique by painting industrial factories with complex structural planes, leading him to becoming a pioneer for the precisionist movement. We have digitally enhanced some of his Bermuda landscapes, flowers, circus performers, and his most famous artwork “The Figure 5 in Gold”. They are free to download and to be used under the CC0 license.

The movie theater at the Stonefield shopping center in Charlottesville, VA. It was a somewhat boring view of a somewhat boring building, so I decided to take a different approach than usual. I had just been looking at Charles Demuth's Cubist styled watercolors and thought that that might work here.

While running errands this afternoon, as I drove through Demuth Park, I found the 3 Palm Springs Noodles next to the Senior Center. I stopped and took a few photos.
When Darek got home this evening we loaded the furbys into the car and took them to the Vet IQ in La Quinta for their canine influenza shots.

I'm not sure what to call this tasty dessert, but what's in in the name? More important is what's in the cup. From bottom to top: cooked rhubarb; strained soy yogurt sweetened with vanilla and ginger syrup; rhubarb syrup; toasted almonds. Can you believe how pink the rhubarb is? Amazing. The dairy-eaters had a white chocolate and rhubarb cheesecake. I was not jealous.

===========
In dieser geläuterten Verfassung lassen wir sie nun weiter stehen und ihren Nicht-Partner Karl Marx betrachten. Und wenn sie nicht gestorben ist ...
Tschüss, Lenchen.

I Saw the Figure 5 in Gold was inspired by the poem, “The Great Figure,” written by Demuth’s friend, William Carlos Williams:
Among the rain
and lights
I saw the figure 5
in gold
on a red
firetruck
moving
tense
unheeded
to gong clangs
siren howls
and wheels rumbling
through the dark city.
Williams’ poem recalls a night when he was walking down Ninth Avenue in New York City on his way to painter Marsden Hartley’s studio. He heard the noises of a fire truck, only to turn around just as it was passing by. All he saw was the number of the truck, a five painted in gold, on a red background speeding past. At this moment in his career Williams was trying to create poems that were precise and concrete representations of original experiences, so he avoided symbolism and metaphor in favor of simple language that evokes the speed (“moving tense unheeded”), the sounds (“gong clangs siren howls and wheels rumbling”), and the images (rain, lights, firetruck, dark city) he witnessed. Reportedly, Williams wrote this one-sentence poem right there on the street that night.

Today's We're Here Challenge: Kids...between 0-100
I made this challenge to the group and had a big plan for me on playground equipment. I jumped into the car and went to Ruth Hardy Park to use their, playground...who would have thought children would be playing there?!? LOL I didn't think parents would want a 69 year old climbing on the monkey bars with their kids..so I headed to Victoria Park...MORE CHILDREN!! My last hope was Demuth Park...no luck. I headed home trying to come up with a new plan and color caught my eye in a non-gated community. I investigated and found they had a playground. I parked and headed to the playgrounds. Nobody was in the courtyard...or near the playground. I hurried to it, took 3 photos and walked back to my car. What a day!

I've known the poem by William Carlos Williams, and the associated painting by Charles Demuth, from an illustrated version in Junior Voices 1 by Penguin for over forty years. When I was in New York in 2004 I saw the original painting in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Charles Demuth, American
b. 1883 Lancaster, PA; d. 1935 Lancaster, PA
Though not a physical likeness, Demuth created this portrait of his friend, the poet and physician William Carlos Williams, using imagery from Williams' poem "The Great Figure," that evokes the sights and sounds of a fire engine speeding down the street. The intersecting lines, repeated "5", round forms of the numbers, lights, streetlamp, and blaring sirens of the red fire engine together infuse the painting with a vibrant, urban energy.
