Demuth (1883-1935) was one of the most talented watercolorists I have ever seen. He is also known for more abstract images most notably "I Saw the Number 5 in Gold" at the MET. A retrospect of his work is long overdue. Dr. Alvord L. Eiseman worked on his catalogue resonne for years I never worked with some more dedicated to his subject.

Charles Demuth (1883-1935) depicted this grain elevator in his hometown of Lancaster PA in a Precisionist style. The pyramidal roof is thought to have inspired the painting’s title.

Founded in 1770 by Christopher Demuth,at 114 E. King Street, the tobacco shop was passed down through the family for more than 200 years. It is the oldest continuously operated tobacco shop in America. In fact, Demuth's Tobacco Shop is still in the original building where the company started. In the 1920's noted Lancaster architect Emlen Urban designed the interior and exterior as the shop appears today. The shop sells a range of premium cigars, pipes, cigarettes and accessories including Demuth brand cigars, snuff and pipe tobacco. And the staff is always willing to answer questions. While visiting the tobacco shop, tour the adjacent home and museum of internationally known Lancaster artist Charles Demuth at 120 East King Street.
