Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns.

I needed to take a landscape photo for ComTech, and this is the result. I love the color and the clouds ... such pretty clouds!! I'll be uploading a similar one soon ... a panorama I did of the entire landscape!!

You will not find Juneberries in the grocery store. You have to pick them yourself. But, it is a race against the birds; robins love these berries.

A Juneberry – serviceberry, shadbush or saskatoon – is an Amelanchier, a deciduous shrubs or small trees. The tree, beside our house, is at least 20 feet, a very tall Juneberry tree! It was in our landscaping package with the new home in 1995! We always thought this was a crapapple and never knew - until this year - the berries were for humans as well as birds!!!

Juneberry trees have beautiful white blossoms in early spring. The five-petal flower resembles a star. The fruit arrives in summer. In the fall, the leaves are gold, yellow, orange and red. It truly is a magnificent tree for all seasons.

The fruit turns from green to deep red or dark purple when it ripens. It resembles a blueberry and is very sweet. The Juneberry has a crown – a star-shaped opening opposite the fruitstalk. The Juneberry is a pome fruit, a cousin to the apple and the pear. The fruit is borne in clusters of around six, usually, and inside has a small soft seed. A pome fruit is defined by Wikipedia: Some pomes may have a mealy texture (e.g., some apples); others (e.g., Amelanchier, Aronia) are berry-like with juicy flesh and a core that is not very noticeable.

Be ready, the picking season spans about 21 days. I have read that every year’s picking batch will be a bit different. Some years, the berries are waterlogged. This year’s batch is superb! I must be nearing day 21. At least the birds start at the top branches, so I still have a day left to pick a few more on the lower branches – if it will stop raining!!!

Juneberries are delicious eaten raw. Last week, I made a sauce to top grilled salmon, on a bed of lettuce. And I now have a recipe for Juneberry jam!
