It seems we have a new Holiday tradition. I dig my leek from the garden in mid-December and I share with the neighbors. Since most don't know much about leek, I make up "Potato-Leek Soup kits" (potatoes, an onion, bouillon cube - and of course, two nice leek.)
It is surprising how folks look forward to my kits -- Parents and kids :) :) :)
The "Thank you" notes are so special. (Dlisis = delicious, Sope = soup) :) :) The child is not quite 4 years old.

This piece of ephemera in the historical collection at the local antique mall owes its presence here to my nostalgia and self indulgence.
You see, I was a customer of The Shake Shack in the early 1980s. The center of Ocean Park takes up so little land that it's almost possible to see all of it from a few blocks away. That's why, when I first vacationed here with Frank in 1982, I found the Shake Shack almost immediately.
The owner-operator was a grandmotherly woman who looked rather like Aunt Bea in the TV program Mayberry R.F.D. but in person was not the least bit cloying, unlike the real Aunt Bea.
Having discovered that she made great milkshakes, I would visit the Shake Shack daily in the early afternoon on the pretext of walking the dog. It took Frank a long time to figure out the real motive behind my daily walks.
In 1983 I was in the Shake Shack with Frank's late wife when someone I soon realized was a regular walked in. Her big husky dog marched in next to her. Without uttering a word, the proprietor slid open the door of the low freezer, reached in and took out an ice cream sandwich.
She unwrapped the ice creak bar and held it out to the waiting husky, who delicately took it in his teeth, lay down on the floor and proceeded to eat it while his human associate placed her order.
Nothing lasts forever. When I returned to Ocean Park in the 1990s, I discovered to my dismay that the Shake Shack wasn't just out of business; the entire building was gone. Today I doubt I'd be able to find its location.

Delicious is one of my favorite food magazines but I must confess (with also +400 cookbooks on my shelves) I hardly ever cook from a recipe - they serve as an inspiration. Also I love food pics (hence buying all the books & mags).
This time I decided to follow a recipe that looked simple and delicious. Oh well, yes, true, I made some small adjustments and made 4 zones where I used different ingredients. The recipe is a winner and we will certainly use it again, making some more adjustments to taste.
