Heavy rains had drenched Arches National Park and the surrounding area the day before. Taken in late November, the cold overnight temperatures created really thick fog the next morning. As I was photographing in other areas of the park, I looked toward the landscape where Delicate Arch should be. I noticed it was invisible, completely shrouded in fog. Knowing that the rising temperatures would eventually burn off the fog, I quickly rushed to the trail head and hiked up the hill; I wanted to be there before the fog lifted. Once I reached the top (and survived the nearly self-induced heart attack), I set up my shot and waited ... for about 2 hours. As soon as the fog began to burn, it went quickly. I hope I caught it at the right time.

I think I have more photos of Delicate than any other arch. This trip alone, I shot five or six, most with different cameras so at least they look slightly different.

Shot this from distance with the long lens. I always felt this would be a high key processing.

I felt this image needed a very light touch when it came to processing..

Delicate beauty

Playing around this morning preparing for this week’s Macro Monday theme, I decided to take a few photos of one of my orchid flowers in bloom. This of course, led me to wonder, what the orchid flower represents...

Image taken using a Micro Nikkor 55mm at F11 with remote bounce flash.

”The most highly coveted of ornamental plants, the delicate, exotic and graceful orchid represents love, luxury, beauty and strength. In ancient Greece, orchids were associated with virility. In fact, Greek women believed that if the father of their unborn child ate large, new orchid tubers, the baby would be a boy. If the mother ate small orchid tubers, she would give birth to a girl. During the Victorian era, orchid symbolism shifted to luxury, and today this sense of magnificence and artful splendor continues, with orchids representing rare and delicate beauty. The 14th wedding anniversary flower, pink orchids convey pure affection - joy, happiness, and innocence.”

When I first 'rounded the corner' and this came into view, I was blown away by how large it is - 52 feet high!
