Our next stop in Arches National Park was the hike to Delicate Arch. It was still quite early but starting to get hot - glad we didn't leave it any later.
Mute Swan. Best Viewed Large On Black The Mute Swan is reported to mate for life. However, changing of mates does occur infrequently, and swans will remate if their partner dies. If a male loses his mate and pairs with a young female, she joins him on his territory. If he mates with an older female, they go to hers. If a female loses her mate, she remates quickly and usually chooses a younger male. IMG_5772

I'm getting on a National Park fix with the Yosemite trip nearing, so I decided to break into the archive and edit some shots from the previous parks that I have visited.
When we visited Arches it was almost an after thought. We spent the night in Canyonlands, and since we were so close we had to see Arches as well. We didn't have much time to spend, and it was very hot, but we did the short hike to Delicate Arch. I'm glad we saw it, but next time I would like to spend more time here hiking and photographing this beautiful park.

Delicate Arch as viewed from the longer, more strenuous hike to reach the arch itself with the LaSal Mountains as a backdrop....and yes, I did remove all the touristas as they detracted from the beauty of the scene; LOL!!!! Edward Abbey offers a pretty interesting way of describing this natural phenomenon.....

Depending on your preconceptions you may see the eroded remnants of a sandstone fin, a giant engagement ring cemented in rock, a bow-legged pair of petrified cowboy chaps, a triumphal arch for a procession of angels, an illogical freak, a happening.... If Delicate Arch has any significance it lies, I will venture, in the power of the odd and unexpected to startle the senses and surprise the mind out of their ruts of habit, to compel us into a reawakened awareness of the wonderful-that which is full of wonder."

I found this delicate flower on a hiking tour through a beautiful mountain forest in the austrian alps
I was going through several thousand photos today from the past year or so and came across this very intriguing shot of rime ice we had one morning last December. Everything outside was completely enveloped, creating a surreal effect... the needles were almost an inch long but extremely fragile! One touch- you couldn't help yourself- and they simply fell off their mount. Later that morning the air was filled with the delicate tinkle of millions of these tiny ice needles falling to the ground... I've never experienced anything else quite like this!
I am going to be forever mad at myself for deleting this image off my flickr a few years ago.
I shot this image a few years ago when I first exploring conceptual photography. I love the simplicity it captures.

A Large White butterfly resting on delicate purple blossoms, taking a quiet moment in the garden. Captured with a soft focus to highlight the subtle textures of the wings against the dark background.
Often regarded as the most beautiful arch in the world, Delicate Arch stands 65 feet (20m) above the steep sandstone formations below. Delicate Arch is the most recognizable feature of Arches National Park and is an icon of the state of Utah. The Delicate Arch was formed from Entrada Sandstone which was gradually worn away by weathering and wind erosion over millions of years. Delicate Arch is accessible through a moderate 1.5 mile (2.4km) hike up steep slickrock and around narrow rock ledges. On the horizon lies the snow-capped La Sal Mountains which contrasts the deep colors of the surrounding Entrada Sandstone.

About
I always loved trees, especially in winter when they reveal their delicate structure that
look like lungs, they are just as lungs, taking up air and filtering out the carbon dioxide they need to build up their wood, the lungs of our little planet.
I'm feeling quite sick today, splitting headache and a terrible cough, all I'm gonna do is upload this shot and try to sleep a bit.
The shot
Standard 3 exposures HDR [-2,0,+2EV] in RAW/ISO100 at f/9 using the Sigma 10-20mm lens, on a tripod.
Photoshop
° Obviously some copy/paste and flip horizontally/vertically.
° Cleaned up most of the banding effect in the centre by selecting a huge area around it using the lasso tool. Applying a big feather selection to it and a gaussian blur of a size that looked good.
° Cooling filter on the top, warming filter on the bottom, using gradients in their masks.
° Flattened the image.
° Created an extra layer.
° Made a copy of the blue channel and pasted that in the mask of the top layer,
modified the mask with levels and some manual touch ups ( brushing ).
° Performed a gradient in the top layer.
° Changed opacity of layer to around 30%.

I'm still trying to get all of my Utah trip pictures up. Another from Arches National Park. I like them all. Summer is a busy time though. Glad I was able to camp before it got too hot.
I'm still in awe every time I look at these shots. Our timing could not have been better. I'll probably never see it that good again.

Just before sunset. At least a couple of dozen people hung around for the sunset, but as you can see, the clouds were set at the horizon and they never opened up. So no fiery sky this time or much of an afterglow.
Delicate mushrooms [Hare's Foot Inkcap (Coprinopsis lagopus)], I discovered yesterday under a pine tree. I had the wrong lens with me, so I went back in the evening to try some close up shots, only to discover they had already withered.

Delicate arch right after sunset. The atmosphere was actually quite incredible there. A few people were sitting on the edge of this natural amphitheater to watch the sun go down on the horizon. You can see one of them there taking a picture. It gives a sense of scale I think.
If you've been following us for a while here or especially on tumblr, you'll know that we shoot in a lot of different formats, but like to save our very best for Flickr. This means there's a lot of medium format and Polaroids, with only the occasional 35mm film photo and even rarer, digital. It's tough trying to find a balance between what we post here while still keeping some coherence to our stream.
Sometimes though, we really love a photo, like this one, which may not necessarily fit in our usual 'style' - it's both digital and quite edited (we liked the shot but the colours didn't exactly fit), which we don't often post here but we couldn't help ourselves. Hopefully you like it too!

Delicate Arch is commonly used as a symbol to represent Utah. I've never seen it before, but we were in awe at how beautiful it was in-person. You gain a lot of elevation on the hike to get to it, but it was a beautiful hike and probably our favorite part of the park. Not sure who the individual posing under the arch is, but I appreciate the reference of scale.
